Relatives of those murdered and wounded on Bloody Sunday have spoken of how their heart goes out to all other families ‘robbed’ of their chance of justice by the British government’s ‘terrible’ Legacy Bill and of their horror at the ongoing ‘ethnic cleansing’ of Palestine.
Speaking on behalf of the families at the 52nd Annual Bloody Sunday Memorial Service, Gerry Duddy, brother of Jackie Duddy, told those gathered that the 2024 anniversary was dedicated to the people of Palestine and that this was ‘one world, one struggle until all are free’.
Thirteen innocent boys and men were shot dead by British army soldiers on January 30, 1972 in the Bogside area during a civil rights march in Derry.  A fourteenth victim died a few months later.
The 14 people killed were: Jackie Duddy, Michael Kelly, Hugh Gilmour, William Nash, John Young, Michael McDaid, Kevin McElhinney, James Wray, William McKinney, Gerard McKinney, Gerard Donaghey, Patrick Doherty, Barney McGuigan and John Johnston.
An interfaith group of leaders including Bishop of Derry, Dr Donal McKeown, Fr Michael Canny, Rev David Latimer, Dr Sameh Hassan, chair of the North West Islamic Association and Rev. David Jennings joined the families at the event.

00:00 fire.
00:10 When leaves are falling, as the bright sick men,
00:21 Winter is calling, our children's silent care.
00:31 When the moon is covered by shadows of the night,
00:42 Know that I am with you, to call you to the fight.
00:54 Oh, be still, oh, be still, for I am your God.
01:05 Be still, as I am your Son, and you will hear my cry.
01:16 Be still, oh, be still, deep within your life,
01:27 For you will find me in the last one.
01:43 When snow-dark winds are beating, and it blows not right,
01:53 When hearts are broken, and children's hearts are dry,
02:04 When prayers are spoken, raising you and I,
02:14 You will find your answer, if you call me to the fight.
02:27 Be still, oh, be still, for I am your God.
02:37 Be still, now I'm listening, and you will hear my cry.
02:48 Be still, oh, be still, deep within your life,
02:59 For you will find me in the last one.

09:29 We'll have a few words of prayer in solitude.
09:32 I invite the Reverend David Lavender to speak a few words to us.
09:35 Anniversaries are an important part of our lives
09:46 and they serve to put a pin on the calendar
09:49 to remind us of something that matters to us.
09:52 Here in our city, on the last Sunday of January each year,
09:57 that serves to bring us together to recall and to remember
10:02 the awful outcome of the Civil Rights March way back in 1972.
10:08 Regardless of the weather, and often, unlike this morning,
10:12 it has been wet and cold,
10:14 still the annual Bloody Sunday memorial service is an event
10:18 that succeeds in drawing people together in the open air
10:22 with those families whose loved ones were murdered by soldiers
10:26 of the British Army's Parachute Regiment.
10:29 In his New Year message, the Archbishop of Canterbury
10:34 said something that I took note of.
10:37 "Wars," he said, "seem to be everywhere at the moment.
10:42 We need to see and to make peace."
10:45 Word to God, the voice of the peacemaker was heard above the din of war.
10:52 However, right now that seems totally out of reach,
10:56 especially with the horrific invasion by Israel into Gaza
11:03 and Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
11:07 According to a Reading University professor,
11:11 the 21st century will just be another bloody century
11:16 because, he says, there are no reasons that have weight
11:19 to suggest why this century will have any other nature.
11:24 Bottom line, nowhere is 100% peaceful,
11:29 and no continent, country, or city is 100% perfect.
11:35 Soon, to build a better future for ourselves and others,
11:40 no matter of their creed or culture,
11:43 we need to pick up the key of togetherness
11:47 that can open a door to reveal an untrodden road,
11:52 a road, my friends, that will be broad enough and wide enough
11:57 for all of us to set our feet on
12:00 and to start walking determined to let nothing or no one
12:06 deflect us from shaping this city.
12:11 Built on security, prosperity, and quality of life for all,
12:18 so help us God.
12:21 Our Ayah l'keelah, my friends, is this the road,
12:26 forward together, this is the way.
12:31 God bless you, God bless you.
12:36 [applause]
12:42 Assalamu alaikum, Mr. President.
13:02 I'm very honored and grateful for the Bloody Sunday
13:05 for inviting me again this year
13:08 to speak on behalf of the Muslim community
13:11 in the 52nd anniversary of the Bloody Sunday massacre.
13:16 The Bloody Sunday remembrance comes every year
13:21 to remind us of how does it feel
13:24 to lose a father, a son, a brother, or a friend
13:29 to such a senseless violence.
13:32 It comes up every year to remind us
13:35 of how does it feel to live under oppression and discrimination,
13:40 and how does it feel to be denied
13:43 the basic human rights of equality and self-determination.
13:49 It comes up every year to remind us of the struggle of others
13:54 for equality and human rights,
13:57 and our responsibilities as humans to achieve justice for us.
14:04 As Martin Luther King says,
14:07 "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
14:12 The struggle of the Bloody Sunday families is our struggle too.
14:18 While we honor the memory and sacrifice of the Bloody Sunday victims,
14:24 and the steadfastness of their families in seeking justice,
14:28 we should also honor the plight of our brothers and sisters in Palestine
14:35 and in many other places around the world
14:38 who are still suffering from injustice and oppression as we speak.
14:44 Millions of Palestinians have been living under occupation,
14:48 apartheid, and siege for decades,
14:51 having to endure countless atrocities and violations of international law.
14:56 And over the last three months,
14:59 nearly two million Palestinians have been displaced,
15:02 and tens of thousands of children, women, and elderly
15:07 have been denied their right to live.
15:10 But the indiscriminate violence of the genocidal is our only war machine.
15:16 As people of faith, we believe that God is the best of planners,
15:22 and that he tests us with hardship to see who among us are patient,
15:28 and with ease to see who among us are grateful.
15:34 God says in the Quran,
15:36 "And we will surely test you with something of fear and hunger,
15:40 and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits."
15:43 But give glad tidings to the patient,
15:47 who when disaster strikes them, say,
15:50 "Indeed, we belong to God, and indeed to him we shall return."
15:55 Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy,
15:59 and it is those who are rightly guided.
16:03 Therefore, we do not despair or lose hope in the face of injustice and oppression.
16:11 We do not resort to violence or hatred.
16:15 We patiently seek only justice and peace.
16:19 The Palestinian families have shown us a great example of this.
16:24 The Palestinian people are also inspiring us and all humanity
16:30 with resilience and endurance when they lose their loved ones unjustly.
16:36 We see them standing in front of these calamities like mountains,
16:42 saying, "Indeed, we belong to God, and indeed to him we shall return."
16:48 As people of faith, we also believe that God is the source of all justice,
16:55 and that if justice was not achieved from God,
16:59 it will be achieved by the just ones that they take.
17:03 But he also commands us to stand up for justice in this life and for the next.
17:11 I quote from the Bible, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
17:17 Ensure justice for those being cast out."
17:20 I also quote from the Quran, God saying, "All you who have belief,
17:25 be persistently standing firm in justice.
17:29 Witnesses for God, even if it be against yourselves or parents or relatives.
17:37 Whether one is rich or poor, God is for all of you."
17:43 While standing here in solidarity with the bloody Saudi families,
17:48 let us not forget the lessons of the history.
17:52 Let us not repeat the mistakes of the past.
17:56 Let us not be silent in the face of injustice.
18:01 Yesterday, we were commemorating the victims of the Holocaust
18:06 and the millions of lives taken in genocides globally, mass and personal.
18:12 So let us reaffirm that "Never again" means never again for anybody.
18:18 Let us not be indifferent to the sufferings of others,
18:22 and let us not be divided in this by our own bodies,
18:27 in faith, in Allah, and in religion.
18:30 Let us be united by our common humanity and guided by our values.
18:35 Let us be seekers of justice and peace.
18:39 O God, you are peace, and from you is peace, and to you returns peace.
18:45 So let us live for our world in peace.
18:49 Ameen. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.
18:52 Tirmidhi salam wa rahmatullah.
18:54 Bi hurmati Muhammad al-Mustafa wa bi siri Surat al-Fatiha.
19:00 Could I now call on John Kennedy to introduce the families for the big day in Jerusalem.
