00:03 I wanted the audience to feel like, oh, snap.
00:10 We stepped it up to the next level of like,
00:12 yeah, we got a little dirty here, didn't we?
00:17 Hello, I'm Mark Skizak.
00:18 I'm the stunt coordinator and second team director
00:20 on Marvel Studios' "Echo."
00:22 Today, we're looking at the fight scene
00:23 between Maya and Daredevil.
00:28 The storyline behind it, which is Kingpin throwing her
00:33 to the wolves at this moment and saying,
00:35 kind of sink or swim, kid, now is the time,
00:38 was the base of what we were going for.
00:41 Making that into what we ended up with
00:45 took collaboration from everybody.
00:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51 When we started doing the stunt biz,
00:53 we were able to do that just in our rehearsal space.
00:55 We'd build boxes and pads and whatever else.
00:58 It's like we're kids making a fort.
01:00 We sort of built the actual set to what we
01:03 built in our rehearsal space.
01:05 So this was a little bit reverse engineered,
01:08 where we kind of created this whole flow and this fight,
01:13 and then we sort of built the actual set
01:15 to look enough like that.
01:17 For Maya's fighting style, we looked at her introduction
01:24 back from Hawkeye.
01:26 She's trained by a villain.
01:28 There's nobody really holding her back.
01:30 I wanted that switch that flipped.
01:32 It's like, oh, you know, like, yeah, one punch to the face
01:35 would work, but why not give them two in this MMA
01:38 grounded mixed martial arts where she can kind of come
01:41 at you with anything, and you don't know.
01:43 Alacqua obviously is incredible.
01:46 As my fight coordinators are building this,
01:47 they know her fighting style.
01:49 They know what her strengths are.
01:51 So what we're going to do is we're going
01:52 to put that into the fight.
01:54 We're going to build that in so that we
01:56 know that she can pull it off.
01:58 She can do it great.
01:59 We wanted to make sure that every punch that she threw,
02:02 that she actually got her body behind it,
02:04 and it looked real, like she was going for it.
02:09 I would say, hey, Alacqua, can we go harder?
02:11 She's like, yeah, go harder.
02:13 And everybody's like, well, you know, and I was like,
02:15 no, no, she's good.
02:16 Same thing with Charlie.
02:17 I mean, he comes in, and he wants to do everything.
02:19 He's a legend, so he's able to come in and learn
02:21 the fight in a day.
02:23 You know, like, Daredevil's a badass.
02:26 I've been watching them all night.
02:29 And then you guys show up.
02:31 Sydney had the idea of making this a one-er.
02:34 A one-er is a continuous shot.
02:37 This is incredibly challenging.
02:39 Like, the guy comes crashing through the door
02:41 or any of those things.
02:42 He's got to do that 20 times to get it right,
02:45 because there's so many elements that
02:47 happen after that that's still in that same shot.
02:50 We make it a one-er by using blends and transitions
02:55 and fancy camera work in order to make
02:57 it look like one seamless shot.
03:00 If you go back just a little bit,
03:02 when our actress, Alacqua, comes in, that is now the stunt double.
03:07 So she walks through, and we did a wipe on her back.
03:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:20 And there's another wipe right here.
03:21 So that was Alacqua rolling on the ground,
03:24 but it was Caitlyn in the beginning.
03:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:29 We were questioning whether she would want to do that.
03:32 It was kind of a hard hit.
03:33 You know, she slams up against a desk,
03:35 and if it doesn't go perfect, then her head hits,
03:37 or her hip hits, or whatever else.
03:39 And she wanted to do it.
03:40 So the balance between, I don't want you to get hurt,
03:43 and this one has the potential to do that.
03:45 So you've got to hold her back sometimes.
03:48 Now this was another cut.
03:49 So that was hidden in a whip pan.
03:52 I love this kick right here.
03:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:56 Nice.
04:01 And then we went back up to her.
04:03 So that was hidden in a whip.
04:04 Nice job, kid.
04:06 So there was a wire gag there.
04:17 We actually took the actress for a little ride.
04:20 She was very tough.
04:21 When it comes to a chair being kicked across the room
04:30 into someone's face, OK, how are we going to accomplish that?
04:34 We can kick a real chair once at a stunt guy's face,
04:36 and then he's going to go to the hospital.
04:38 You know, like, we don't want to do that.
04:39 Now we're doing a one-er here also.
04:41 So that means the chair has to go perfectly,
04:44 you know, like, to where it goes.
04:46 And then we have to continue the scene, or it doesn't work.
04:49 So now how many times are we going
04:51 to be kicking a chair in order to get the chair to work?
04:53 So when we go to visual effects with a problem like that,
04:57 they'll let us know what their solves are
04:59 and whether they sometimes want us to kick something,
05:02 just so something's going through the air.
05:05 This one, we didn't kick anything.
05:08 I loved Daredevil coming up over the top.
05:11 Doesn't even skip a beat.
05:12 He's like, all right, I'm up and over this thing.
05:14 There's not a ton of places to rig wires.
05:17 Obviously, Justin is an amazing stunt double,
05:19 but he can't really jump up that high.
05:21 So we've got to get him a little assistance.
05:23 And then also, she's shooting at him,
05:25 and he comes down, you know, like, with an attack.
05:30 That was challenging.
05:30 That was a lot of pieces that need to come together.
05:34 There's an energy that when it works, everybody knows.
05:37 Echo was such an exciting project
05:42 to work on from beginning to end.
05:44 The director, Sydney, was just so much fun to work with.
05:48 Our DPs, our camera operators, our rigging team
05:51 was incredible.
05:52 Then you give me a villain-led, you know,
05:54 like, show where I get to be a little bit dirtier in the MCU.
05:58 I mean, it's great.
06:00 Everybody go check it out.
06:00 Marvel Studios' Echo is now streaming.
