00:00 In a significant turn of events, an independent commission in Canada tasked with investigating
00:09 foreign interference has requested information from the Trudeau government concerning alleged
00:14 meddling by India in Canadian elections.
00:18 This move could further strain relations between Ottawa and New Delhi.
00:22 The commission was established by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government in September of
00:26 2023.
00:27 It is conducting a public inquiry into foreign influence in Canadian affairs.
00:32 This comes after reports emerged of supposed Chinese attempts to sway Canadian elections,
00:37 despite Beijing consistently denying any interference.
00:41 The commission, led by Quebec judge Marie-Josée Hogue, issued a statement on Wednesday revealing
00:46 that it has formally requested documents from the Canadian government related to alleged
00:51 interference by India in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
00:56 The statement read, "The Commission will also examine the flow of information within the
01:00 federal government, assess the actions taken in response, and evaluate the federal government's
01:05 capacity to detect, deter and counter foreign interference."
01:09 It further mentioned that recommendations will be made based on the findings.
01:13 The commission is expected to release an interim report by May 3 and a final report by the
01:18 end of this year.
01:20 Its mandate includes investigating alleged foreign interference not only from India but
01:24 also from China, Russia and other nations.
01:27 Diplomatic relations between India and Canada have been strained in recent months, primarily
01:32 due to allegations from Canada linking Indian agents to the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep
01:38 Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023.
01:41 India has firmly rejected these accusations and as of now, Canadian authorities have not
01:46 pressed charges in connection with the murder.
01:49 As tensions escalate, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa has not yet responded to requests
01:53 for comments on the latest development.
