Singer, songwriter, and producer Luther Vandross was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. He started his career supporting David Bowie, Roberta Flack, Bette Midler, and more. His undeniable talent earned platinum records and accolades, but he struggled to break out beyond the R&B charts. Intensely driven, he overcame personal and professional challenges to secure his place as a legend in music history. Director Dawn Porter invites audiences on a musical journey into the life of this music icon with performances, recording sessions, insights with fellow musicians and friends, and archival interviews with Luther himself to reveal his humor, frustrations, loneliness, and unwavering dedication to his craft. Luther: Never Too Much is a sensitive celebration of the one and only Luther Vandross.

00:09 This is a movie where every single time you watch it,
00:13 you kind of lean into a different song
00:15 and a different story,
00:16 and I really love that about this picture.
00:18 Luther is everywhere.
00:20 There were literally too many things to tell.
00:22 - Hopefully this film will give people the opportunity
00:24 to say, look, Luther is everywhere.
00:27 He's a beautiful performer.
00:28 He really is the creator of this vision.
00:31 You know, when you go and see his shows,
00:33 you're looking at his vision.
00:35 Nobody said, get out there and do this or wear that.
00:37 - I am his niece.
00:38 One of nine, he always just wanted to be a family man
00:43 within the family, and that worked out beautifully
00:47 because then as we got older and understood,
00:50 it was like, this is kind of impressive.
00:52 - Luther is just such a special story.
00:54 Like I grew up on it.
00:55 I mean, it was my parents' favorite singer,
00:57 so yeah, it's a special film,
01:00 and Jamie was really passionate about it, so.
01:02 - Jamie set the tone for all of us,
01:04 which is have fun, celebrate art.
01:06 - I don't care if you can call me biased if you want to,
01:09 but it's one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.
01:11 - I think after you see this,
01:13 you're gonna run to your Luther playlist
01:15 or you're gonna create one,
01:17 and then you're gonna listen to him.
01:19 - I am only listening to Luther Vandross.
01:21 (laughing)
01:23 Of course, never too much.
01:25 - Wait for love, cannot be beat.
01:28 - So amazing.
01:29 - I really love Any Love.
01:30 Luther talks about it so emotionally
01:32 and like about how it was autobiographical for him.
01:35 People know Luther for, you know, his famous songs,
01:38 but they don't know like all the work
01:39 that it took to get here,
01:41 so we wanted to do justice to that story.
