00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most iconic death scenes
00:14 in Attack on Titan. Obviously, spoilers ahead.
00:24 Number 10, Hanes. During a high-stakes rescue operation, Hanes is the only one standing
00:30 between Eren, Mikasa, and a very hungry Titan. And yet, given their history, he has no choice
00:44 but to stand and fight. Years ago, Eren's mother died because of Hanes's cowardice,
00:50 and now he has a chance to redeem himself for her son. It's a noble gesture and all,
00:55 but in the end, Hanes' life is only worth a few fleeting moments of safety. After that,
01:03 Eren's saviour becomes Titan food, just like everyone else. Still, Hanes can rest
01:09 easy knowing that, however briefly, he finally protected the Jaegers like he always said
01:22 he would.
01:23 Number 9, Mikey. You've got to give Mikey credit for one thing; he's pretty cool under
01:27 pressure. Even when coming face-to-face with the beast Titan, he still draws its attention
01:32 to give his squad time to escape. And for a moment, it seems like Mikey might actually
01:44 get away too. But then the beast Titan talks. The horror on Mikey's face says it all;
01:55 he's doomed, and he knows it. Worst of all, he doesn't even get the glory of dying to
02:01 a talking Titan. After stealing his ODM gear, the beast simply leaves Mikey behind to be
02:08 devoured by other Titans. Based on his screams, it wasn't quick and it wasn't painless.
02:20 Number 8, Willy Tybur. Anyone who showed up for this declaration of war got two for the
02:26 price of one. Just as Willy Tybur finished announcing his plans of the attack on Paradis,
02:32 Eren appeared and did the same for Marley. But as they say, actions speak louder than
02:45 words. So, instead of a boring speech, Eren turned into a Titan and ate Willy whole. As
02:57 it turns out, the Tybur noble planned on becoming a martyr all along. He knew that, in the grand
03:04 scheme of things, his death would only matter because of what it represented. As a result,
03:10 this grand demise marked the real point of no return for Marley and for Eren.
03:20 Number 7, Squad Levi. In this world, trust is the only currency that matters. Eren knew
03:26 the risks of putting his faith in others, but despite his better judgement, Squad Levi
03:31 weren't just allies anymore; they were friends. When they told Eren they'd defeated the
03:37 female Titan without him, he believed them. And that's a mistake he has to live with.
03:42 Using her assortment of unique abilities, the female Titan broke through the team's
03:47 best-laid plans with no remorse. Just like that, Squad Levi fell. Elde, Oro, Petra, gone
04:03 in a heart-wrenching blink of an eye. All because Eren trusted their word. By the time
04:14 he finally goes full beast mode on the female Titan, she's earned everything she had coming.
04:28 Number 6, Zeke. Given their very, very messy history together, "Attack on Titan" couldn't
04:34 have ended without one final confrontation between Zeke and Levi. We knew it, Levi knew
04:40 it, hell, even Zeke knew it. After speaking with Armin, he decides to die of his own will
04:55 rather than live under Eren's. Levi doesn't waste the chance, and with a single strike,
05:00 finally fulfils his promise to Erwin. And yet, Zeke's decapitation feels oddly sombre.
05:12 He spends his final moments trying to appreciate the weather, knowing full well he doesn't
05:17 deserve to. That dichotomy sums up Zeke's end perfectly; while he can't ever truly
05:23 atone for the things he's done, dying for the greater good comes pretty damn close.
05:33 Number 5, Sasha. Most of the time, you can feel it in your gut when a character is about
05:39 to meet their maker. Not with Sasha, though. For years, her and her hungry antics kept
05:44 the Survey Corps in high spirits, even as they fought against overpowered Titans, former
05:50 allies and entire nations. It's a tough blow, then, that Sasha doesn't actually die on
05:59 the battlefield. In fact, she was already nice and cosy on the retreating airship when
06:04 Gabi rolled out of hiding and shot her point-blank.
06:12 The closest thing we get to a proper goodbye is Sasha's final mumblings about meat. As
06:18 realistic as it is, it's hard not to feel like Sasha deserved better.
06:33 Number 4, Bertholdt. Even compared to its gigantic brethren, the Colossal Titan has
06:39 a pretty high kill count. It's even partly responsible for the death of Eren's mother.
06:44 Couple that with Bertholdt infiltrating the Survey Corps, and you could say his betrayal
06:49 left some bad blood. But the bigger they are, the harder they fall, right? Seeing Eren tear
06:55 Bertholdt from the Colossal's body is just plain epic. And that's not even the end of
07:00 it.
07:07 In an oh-so-poetic turn of events, Bertholdt is then eaten by the very same kind of Titans
07:13 he helped unleash on the walls. Later, Armin uses the Colossal's power to wage war against
07:23 Bertholdt's own homeland. Revenge has never tasted so sweet.
07:32 Number 3, Erwin. To set the scene, the Survey Corps is surrounded, the Beast Titan is raining
07:38 down rocks, and Levi can't get close enough to fight back. That's when Erwin comes in.
07:44 He decides to distract the Beast Titan with the only thing he has left – his life. He
07:53 even gets a whole squadron of rookies to follow him, and together, their rousing death march
07:59 is nothing short of inspiring. At least, it is until the Beast Titan wipes them all out
08:04 with a pitch made of gravel. For what it's worth, their sacrifice paid off. But although
08:17 Levi landed the winning blow, there's no denying that this is Erwin's victory through
08:22 and through. Rest easy, Commander.
08:33 Number 2, Hanji. "Give your heart" – it's practically the motto of the Survey Corps.
08:39 But no one personifies that idea quite like Hanji, who dedicated their life, soul, and
08:45 boundless curiosity to the study of Titans. With that said, what better way for Hanji
08:57 to go out than seeing their beloved research up close and personal? And during the fabled
09:07 rumbling no less. It's practically a victory lap of Hanji's life's work. Of course,
09:13 it isn't just for play. Hanji's blaze of glory gives their team enough time to slip
09:18 away and stop the rumbling for good. Staring down an army of colossal Titans doesn't
09:24 sound too appealing, but for Hanji, we couldn't have asked for anything more fitting.
09:41 Number 1, Eren. It doesn't get any bigger than this, and we don't mean the size of
09:56 the Titan. Without Eren, there's no show. Although, in retrospect, that was his goal
10:02 all along. He turned himself into humanity's villain, so his friends could be its hero.
10:16 But, when the moment of reckoning comes, it's not that simple. As Eren says himself, he
10:22 doesn't want to die. If it were truly up to him, he'd grow old alongside Armin and
10:27 Mikasa. Sadly, that's not the reality he chose. Instead, Eren shares one last silent
10:40 goodbye with Mikasa, and finally accepts his fate. Whether he died as a hero or a villain,
10:47 it's clear that "Attack on Titan" is nothing without Eren Jaeger. Which AOT death
10:57 are you still not over? Mourn with us in the comments below.
