00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo, and in this instalment of Versus, it's a big one, as we're pitting
00:08 iPhone against Android.
00:10 Which platform has the best apps, tech support, accessories and ease of use?
00:14 And which reigns supreme overall?
00:15 Well, stay tuned to find out.
00:24 We're going to be honest right off the bat with this one.
00:26 In terms of overall price and availability, Android devices from brands like Samsung and
00:30 Google usually offer much more flexible packages than Apple.
00:33 Take Samsung for example.
00:35 The brand offers a phone for every user, of all technical abilities, at every price point,
00:39 from your technophobe grandfather to your hot-shot business executive.
00:49 And although Google's range of phones tend to be a bit more specialised and expensive,
00:52 the brand still offers a wide range of devices at different price points.
00:56 Compare that to Apple's limited iPhone range, which is quick to retire ageing models, and
01:00 you've got quite the contrast.
01:01 And even when comparing flagship devices, Android phones usually come out cheaper.
01:05 You'll usually find that the latest brand new shiny iPhone is more expensive than pretty
01:09 much any other top of the range Android device, with the exception of some of the very expensive
01:13 Google Pixel devices.
01:15 When it comes to actually buying an Android or iPhone device, the format is usually more
01:19 widely available from a variety of retailers, opening up the possibility of getting a better
01:23 deal.
01:24 For all the reasons we just mentioned, we're giving this round to Android.
01:35 Okay, this is where the fanboy pitchforks will likely start to come out, because apps
01:39 and their usability and availability are constantly a topic of debate in the smartphone world,
01:43 especially in the iPhone vs Android debate.
01:46 It's no secret that Android has more apps than iOS, about a million more in fact.
01:54 But does that mean Android is the superior app platform?
01:56 Well, not quite.
01:58 The Google Play Store, where Android apps can be downloaded from, is more relaxed when
02:01 it comes to what apps it allows on its storefront.
02:04 This means lax vetting when it comes to app compatibility with various devices and potential
02:08 app malware.
02:09 So, you could argue there are far more Android apps available, but many of them may be duds
02:14 for one reason or another.
02:17 Apple's iOS apps, however, have a reputation for being, well, better overall.
02:25 Apps developed specifically for the iOS platform have a better track record for compatibility
02:29 and security, and general user friendliness too.
02:32 Users who frequently jump between iOS and Android devices note the difference between
02:36 the quality of apps is palpable.
02:37 You might even find the exact same app from a developer just works better on iOS, no doubt
02:42 due to the fact that said developer has a brand-wide, cookie-cutter iOS framework to
02:46 work with, rather than a mishmash of different frameworks offered by various Android devices.
02:51 With quality over quantity, this round goes to the iPhone.
02:58 Android used to be miles behind its Apple counterpart when it came to offering seamless
03:01 connectivity throughout an ecosystem of products.
03:04 However, brands like Samsung have come a long way, and for every Apple Watch and iPad that
03:08 exists Samsung pretty much has a wearable or tablet that goes up against it, and links
03:12 up effortlessly with your smartphone, allowing you to work, play, stream and browse between
03:17 devices without missing a beat.
03:19 In fact, you could argue that with Samsung offering a wider variety of products equipped
03:23 with smartphone-enabled technology, from TVs to refrigerators, the scope of Samsung's
03:28 multi-device ecosystem is far greater.
03:35 But the proof is indeed in the pudding.
03:37 I mean, Android devices struggling to connect, dropping out or having compatibility issues
03:41 between different devices is a very common occurrence.
03:44 In a similar way to Android apps, the Android ecosystem has plenty to offer, it's just
03:48 lacking finesse.
03:49 Apple, on the other hand, is the poster boy for seamless connectivity, and it's a big
03:53 part of their marketing for a reason.
03:55 If you buy multiple Apple products, they will connect to each other without you having to
03:58 even think about it, whether that's snapping your iPhone onto your MacBook and using it
04:02 as a webcam, or connecting a new pair of AirPods.
04:08 And of course, there are plenty of Apple products out there designed specifically to work alongside
04:12 the iPhone.
04:13 For its set-it-and-forget-it, split-second connectivity between multiple devices, we're
04:17 giving this round to the iPhone.
04:22 Practicality might not be the sexiest word when it comes to discussing tech, but for
04:25 a lot of us, it's huge.
04:27 For example, seamless multi-device integration between iOS devices is awesome.
04:31 What's not so awesome, however, is that the iOS operating system is an entirely closed
04:35 network.
04:36 In other words, as a general rule, Apple products only work with other Apple products.
04:43 Apple likes to keep its customers firmly in the Appleverse, and if you have pretty much
04:47 any repair requirement with your iPhone, you're going to have to go to Apple directly to fix
04:51 it.
04:52 In fact, it was only with the iPhone 15 that the brand finally let go of its lightning
04:56 connector obsession and introduced USB-C charging ports.
04:59 But what about Android?
05:01 Well, we've already discussed the possible issues with compatibility and security with
05:05 Android's more relaxed way of doing things.
05:07 But the fact is, that does make Android devices generally easier to use.
05:11 You can plug an Android device into pretty much any computer, and boom, you can drag
05:15 and drop any files to your heart's content.
05:17 You can also self-repair some issues with Android devices.
05:20 USB-C has been the norm for a while now, expandable microSD card storage is pretty much a prerequisite
05:26 with Android phones, and in our opinion, Google Assistant blows Siri out of the water.
05:35 Because of a lot of little things, and of course, iOS's network being closed, this
05:39 round goes to Android.
05:55 Round 5 - User Experience
05:59 User experience isn't the same as everyday practicality.
06:02 It's less about charging cables and file transfers, and more about what the device
06:06 is like to use, and how it makes you feel.
06:08 We mentioned that brands like Samsung offer entry-level models for inexperienced, infrequent
06:13 and budget-conscious smartphone users.
06:15 But that doesn't mean that these Samsung devices are necessarily easier or more enjoyable
06:19 to use.
06:20 In fact, we'd argue to the contrary.
06:22 Android devices can change massively from device to device, generation to generation,
06:26 making it tough for even ardent Android fans to feel comfortable and instantly at home
06:30 with their new device.
06:32 Android devices also famously have tons of bloatware readily installed on them, which
06:36 not only takes up memory and slows down your device, but can easily confuse users.
06:46 In stark contrast, iPhones are designed to be as streamlined, uncluttered and easy to
06:50 use as possible.
06:51 Apple has kept the feel of its iPhones big and small pretty much the same from the get-go,
06:55 making the user experience easy and familiar each time.
06:59 For added peace of mind, Apple also has enhanced protection with end-to-end encryption, and
07:03 their software updates are far more frequent than Android devices.
07:07 There are also Apple Stores everywhere with genius bars, and iOS boasts things like FaceTime
07:11 and iMessage, the latter giving Android users serious blue bubble envy.
07:18 Android devices have their own unique quirks too, but the aforementioned iPhone perks are
07:22 a big part of what makes its user experience fun.
07:25 And you can't deny the fact that brandishing the Apple logo on your device carries with
07:28 it a sense of tech superiority, something you just don't get with an Android device.
07:32 It's not lost on us that Android devices are more customisable than iPhones, and they
07:36 typically get bigger tech advancements way before equivalent iPhones do.
07:40 But for ease of use, sleepiness and that inexplicable sense of X-Factor, this round goes to the
07:45 iPhone.
07:46 In winning three of the five rounds, the iPhone gets the win.
07:50 So what do you think?
07:51 Did we pick the right winner?
07:52 Let us know in the comments section below.
08:03 And as always, thanks for watching.
