New York Giants UFA Primer - ILB Isaiah Simmons
Transcript
00:00 The New York Giants acquisition of linebacker Isaiah Simmons via trade with the Cardinals
00:08 for a seventh round draft pick was widely lauded as a steal for general manager Joe
00:12 Shane.
00:13 In Simmons, the team was getting a versatile athlete who could do multiple things ranging
00:18 from spying the quarterback to blitzing to manning the back end of the defense and coverage.
00:23 Eventually, the Giants found a role for the speedy Simmons in their nickel and dime packages,
00:28 and he not only finished with the best coverage rating amongst the three team inside linebackers,
00:34 he also posted the third best coverage rating among inside linebackers across the league
00:39 who played in a minimum of 200 coverage snaps.
00:42 Although the Giants defense is currently in a state of flux after the messy departure
00:46 of coordinator Wink Martindale, Simmons does far too many things at an acceptable enough
00:51 level to not warrant another contract from the Giants, who could this year have some
00:56 competition for this still young enough defender with a very unique and specialized skill set.
