Avowed Deep Dive Showcase Gameplay (Xbox Developer_Direct 2024)

Diving Deeper into the World of Avowed. At the recent Xbox Developer_Direct 2024 broadcast, Obsidian Entertainment shared its most comprehensive look yet at its upcoming fantasy-action RPG, Avowed.

This latest look at Avowed gives us a good idea of what to expect from Shatterscarp, one part of the ecologically diverse island of The Living Lands, all in the same universe as Obsidian’s CRPG series Pillars of Eternity. But what makes Avowed a very ‘Obsidian game’ goes far beyond the commonality of setting in the world of Eora.

Avowed will be available Fall 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows 10/11, Steam, and day one with Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.

00:32 At Obsidian, we love creating worlds with deep themes,
00:36 dynamic gameplay, and thoughtful reactivity.
00:40 And Avowed is no different.
00:43 We set out to blend the believable and fantastical
00:47 to give players a world and experience like no other.
00:50 It's colorful, it's vibrant, it's strange.
00:53 It's one of the most incredible settings in the world of Aeora.
00:57 There's going to be a lot of great secrets to discover,
01:00 one of which has a really personal connection to you as the player character,
01:04 and you're going to have a great time getting to know those secrets
01:07 and leaving your mark on the world.
01:09 And when it comes to encounters,
01:11 our combat brings the best of the moment-to-moment fun
01:14 that comes with action-oriented gameplay
01:16 and the depth and breadth of choice that you get with an RPG.
01:19 Here to talk more about Avowed's combat is Gabriel Paramo, Gameplay Director.
01:25 Here at Obsidian, our team's overarching goal is to empower you with choice.
01:29 So we developed a flexible combat system
01:32 that allows you to quickly swap from spellcasting and sharpshooting to melee combat.
01:36 We want to give you the freedom to mix and match your loadout
01:39 to fit the way you want to play from moment-to-moment uninterrupted.
01:43 For all battles, you can combine a variety of weapons, attacks,
01:46 and abilities for tactical advantages against a wide range of enemy types.
01:51 It's not just hacking and slashing.
01:53 You're making real-time decisions about when to use your abilities,
01:57 powerful melee attacks, blocks, parries,
02:01 and special attacks.
02:03 If you choose to approach combat with a one-handed wand,
02:09 it feels quick and snappy when dealing damage to enemies at mid-range.
02:12 Using the Tanglefoot ability, you can stop enemies in their tracks,
02:15 giving you the opportunity to focus on weaker or tougher combatants
02:19 in an intentional and controlled manner.
02:21 It's important to pay attention to the types of enemies you're dealing with.
02:24 Some units are extremely defensive, some are brutishly difficult,
02:28 and others you must make sure you prioritize
02:31 or their healing capabilities will put you in a tough spot.
02:34 To help with the different encounters you will face,
02:36 we provide customizable loadouts that can be quickly switched during combat.
02:40 That means you can play however you want.
02:43 Equip a sword and shield and charge into battle.
02:46 Dual-wield pistols and control the encounter mid-range.
02:50 Or even dual-wield wands to feel like a gunslinging mage.
02:54 You could use your enchanted wand to freeze enemies
02:57 and then use your offhand weapon's power attack to shatter them.
03:01 We've worked hard to keep you constantly engaged as battles unfold
03:05 by creating a balance between pressure and manageability during combat.
03:09 Players will have ample choices for how to build and progress
03:12 their envoy in the world of The Living Lands
03:15 as they get to know the game and the story
03:17 and explore the many diverse regions.
03:19 Some quests in Avowed will have you make difficult decisions
03:22 with profound consequences.
03:24 Like this side quest you may encounter in Shatterscarp,
03:27 the third region you'll explore on your journey through The Living Lands.
03:31 As you're exploring, you come across the bodies of these fallen soldiers.
03:34 And as you explore the remains of the battle,
03:37 it's up to you to determine who, if anyone, is at fault.
03:41 Just the four of us.
03:43 Manu, Keri, Naoki, and me.
03:47 Training under Captain Ruiki.
03:49 Trying to keep the Hurtborn safe.
03:51 In other words, you're a gang of vigilantes.
03:55 Not that I'm one to judge.
03:57 Here. Take my badge.

04:02 Our families deserve to know we fought and died for them.
04:05 Making the right choice isn't always what it seems.
04:08 We embrace moral nuance and grey areas,
04:10 trusting players to make tough decisions in complicated situations.
04:15 My squad and I rested in the cave by the water last night,
04:18 and as we were sleeping, we were ambushed by those miserable Zorops.
04:22 I was so surprised, and it was so dark.
04:25 I just got separated from everyone else.
04:28 Look, I can't face those monsters alone,
04:31 but I have to know if anyone else made it out.
04:33 Of course he did.
04:34 Sergeant Isui never has a thought he won't say out loud.
04:38 So what did he tell you?
04:40 That Captain Ruiki was sick?
04:42 That I was paranoid? That I was a dumb baby?
04:45 I heard it all often, and loudly.
04:48 Wait, if you found Sergeant Isui, why's he not here with you?
04:52 What happened?
04:53 At the end of the quest, you have a choice.
04:56 When you confront Private Naoki, if you believe the story he's told you,
04:59 you can hand over the badges and let him go back home.

05:04 Real battle isn't something you can prepare for, is it?
05:07 It's not my fault.
05:08 No, they should have never have camped in the cave.
05:12 I'll take the badges. I'm going back to Third Born.
05:15 But if you confront him, if you believe that he fled the site of the battle as an act of cowardice,
05:20 then he might challenge you to a fight to reclaim his honor.
05:23 Either way, when you return to town,
05:26 you'll see the consequences of your actions and the choices you made during this quest.
05:30 Creating an immersive experience like Avowed is anchored in the world we build.
05:35 Art Director Matt Hanson and the team have worked to create a unique, colorful, and dynamic visual style.
05:41 From the outset, we knew that we wanted Avowed's setting to feel rich, weird, and wonderful.
05:49 We found inspiration in a wide swath of real-world cultures,
05:54 helping us create a unique RPG experience.
05:57 By contrasting the vibrant with the dull,
06:01 or verdant spaces with sickly ones,
06:04 we can better deliver complex emotional experiences for our players.
06:09 The Living Lands is a continent of untamed valleys with widely varied biomes,
06:14 from luxuriant forests to volcanic wastes,
06:17 and each of those regions itself is a conflux of storied landscapes.
06:23 All of the regions have a lot of special things associated with them,
06:27 but I have a deep place in my heart for Shatterscarp.
06:30 As you're wandering the wastes of Shatterscarp,
06:33 you might notice off in the distance a vibrant jewel of color.
06:37 By transitioning from destitute, muted tones of a wasteland of sand
06:43 and marching in towards a beautiful oasis,
06:46 there's the opportunity there for life, for adventure, and even a little danger.
