The accident that claimed the life of firefighter Lei Chi-Kin of Macau occurred during the Supercar Challenge, supporting race to the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix, held on Sunday morning, 22 November 1998.

During the race, the Ferrari 348 driven by Malaysian Tunku Hammam caught fire due to an oil leak. Hammam parked the burning car in the pits and two firemen were trying to extinguish the fire. Suddenly the Porsche 911T driven by David Tsang of Macau spun out of control, having hit an oil stain from the other car. The Porsche struck the two firemen and three track officials, ending head-on into a barrier. The frontal part of the car was completely destroyed and the driver was knocked unconscious.
