00:10 One of the key challenges of the picture was sound.
00:13 Part of our task was to bring the audience into the sound of the early 1920s Oklahoma.
00:19 And the vitality that comes from real environments is part of how you paint the sound picture.
00:24 [MUSIC]
00:27 Sound has a lot to do with silence.
00:30 And silence is not silent.
00:32 We have to create silence at different times of the day.
00:35 [SOUND]
00:37 You need to be quiet for a while.
00:39 Crickets, birds, animal sounds, horses, cows.
00:45 The organic aspect of a real place and its real environment somehow magically has authenticity.
00:51 And that kind of texture is something you strive for.
00:54 So we were very careful about getting as much atmosphere as possible.
00:58 [MUSIC]
01:00 There was a hard decision made on the production to use authentic real vehicles.
01:04 A car tire on a mud road, not a paved highway.
01:07 It's a very different sound.
01:08 The town didn't have a paved street, it was dirt.
01:11 So the cartwheels and the horses.
01:14 [SOUND]
01:17 All of this was built into the picture piece by piece.
01:20 [SOUND]
01:22 Without the quiet, you can't really have a reference for the loud.
01:25 [SOUND]
01:29 The explosion of the house, which is devastating.
01:32 The scene builds from this intimacy, close quarters, in the bedroom, quiet husband-wife conversation.
01:39 And we get sucked into that so that we, like the characters, will experience the explosion as the startling intrusion.
01:46 [SOUND]
01:50 [MUSIC]
01:53 The big balance was to try to get the sense of what I experienced, how those people lived at that time, with that sound around them.
