04:42 Thanks, Big Mo.
04:43 Well, we're really excited for this fight on Sky Sports.
04:46 I think one of the things that was given as a challenge
04:49 to Boxer and Ben Shalom and everybody that was involved
04:52 is when we did the historic women's night,
04:55 it was how do we build on that?
04:56 How do we make sure that that's not a one-off?
04:59 How do we make sure that the momentum that everybody built
05:02 up in that event and the weeks and months afterwards,
05:06 how do we make sure that that doesn't fall away?
05:08 And I think everybody at this top table
05:10 has picked up that bat and run with it.
05:12 And this is an example that the foundations
05:16 that everybody has laid is now building into high rises.
05:20 This is a rivalry between two ambassadors for the sport,
05:23 two terrific fighters in their own right,
05:26 but also two fighters where there isn't perhaps
05:29 a natural grudge match.
05:31 It's a rivalry based purely on professional ambition,
05:34 wanting to be the best, wanting to continue to be the best,
05:38 and trying to continue to smash through that glass ceiling.
05:41 So thank you to everybody that's involved.
05:44 We're really excited to get this fight done.
05:47 What a way for Boxer to open their account in 2024.
05:50 And it must be special as well,
05:51 because Natasha Jonas,
05:53 your first professional world champion, Ben,
05:55 and the journey continues.
05:58 - It does continue.
05:59 It feels like the culmination of two years.
06:01 I think when Natasha first signed,
06:04 I think we did a six or eight rounder down in London,
06:07 and then we were up and we found a world title.
06:09 But to have it develop into this,
06:12 and for her to realize everything that she'd worked for
06:15 for the past 15 years,
06:16 for us it's been a two year journey,
06:18 but for Natasha it's been 15 years of graft,
06:21 and to see her getting what she deserved,
06:22 to see her getting the accolades that she always deserved,
06:26 it's an amazing moment for us to headline back in Liverpool,
06:30 to be selling a show like the way this is sold.
06:33 She's got morals going up around the city.
06:35 She's a true Liverpool legend.
06:37 I've been in Liverpool with her in recent weeks,
06:39 and she means so much to this city,
06:41 and this city means so much to her.
06:43 So to bring her back as a multi-weight world champion,
06:46 as someone fighting now Michaela Mayer,
06:49 and having a dance partner like this
06:50 in a huge fight for women's boxing,
06:52 it's a special moment for boxer and for Sky Sports,
06:56 but for Natasha this is everything that she's worked for,
06:59 everything that she deserves.
07:00 She's broken so many records,
07:02 and I think she'll go down in history.
07:04 And yeah, a great, great night on Saturday
07:06 for the city to celebrate her,
07:09 and for boxing to see a great, great fight.
07:12 - We'll have a chance to speak to everybody at the top table,
07:14 but I will start with the champion
07:16 in her hometown, Natasha Jonas.
07:17 I think this is one of the biggest compliments
07:19 that we can pay both of you,
07:20 that this fight was not made over social media,
07:24 it wasn't made through a deep-rooted rivalry
07:26 that went back to the amateur days of a disputed decision.
07:28 It was made between two very proud professional fighters
07:31 who want to be the best,
07:32 and you stood in front of each other,
07:34 and effectively did the deal.
07:35 Yes, I know there's financial constraints,
07:37 that there's people at boxer and top rank
07:39 are probably pulling their hair out at me saying that,
07:41 but actually, what does that say about you,
07:43 and what does that say about Michaela,
07:44 that one of the main reasons we're sat here now
07:46 is because both of you wanted it?
07:48 - Yeah, I think it's a big statement to make.
07:51 So many times we see the best not fighting the best,
07:54 and for whatever reason,
07:56 but she wants to be in that.
07:59 I believe that for me to class myself
08:02 as one of the best in this area,
08:04 I have to fight the best,
08:05 and I look at some of the boxers in the list,
08:09 the Katie Taylors, the Chantel Cameron,
08:11 and they'd be people in that top 10 pound for pound list,
08:15 and for me to be able to solidify a legacy for myself,
08:20 I believe I have to do the same,
08:21 and Michaela's in that list, and yeah.
08:24 - I'll come straight to you.
08:25 I mean, it's quite nice to speak about the two of you
08:27 without the fear of tables or glasses going flying,
08:31 although, you know, famous last words of a fool,
08:33 it's still early days,
08:34 but when you hear Tasha speak like that,
08:37 it is a statement of intent from both of you.
08:41 To be the best, you've got to beat the best,
08:42 and she puts you in that best bracket,
08:44 even though you don't have a world title
08:45 bringing to the table at this very moment,
08:47 but how happy are you that we've got this far
08:49 just days away now?
08:50 - Yeah, definitely.
08:52 I mean, I've been wanting to be back in this position
08:54 for a year now.
08:55 I had to take a small setback,
08:57 but to me, I agree with Natasha Jonas,
08:59 and it's not just about the belt.
09:01 It's not just about becoming a world champion again.
09:04 It's about challenging myself against the best
09:07 and having those names on my resume
09:09 and knowing that I did my absolute best
09:11 to challenge myself against the other great girls
09:14 in this sport so that I can truly say
09:16 I'm a pound for pound fighter of this era.
09:18 So that's what's really important to me,
09:20 one, for my own legacy, and two, for the fans,
09:23 because I know these are the type of fights
09:24 that they want to see,
09:25 and us women have been doing that,
09:27 and we're continuing to do that,
09:29 and it's what we got to do
09:31 to show the world that we belong in the sport
09:34 and that we have a place here.
09:36 - Yeah, I mean, Ben Shalom's smile will say it all,
09:39 but ticket sales reflect that.
09:41 I mean, there is a huge amount of interest in this fight.
09:43 There's always a huge amount of interest
09:44 when you're back in Liverpool, Tasha,
09:46 'cause I know you've had to ply your trade
09:47 just down the road in Manchester,
09:49 as Joey Gallagher raises a little smile there.
09:52 But let me ask you, and to use one of Joey's phrases,
09:55 you haven't always perhaps had your flowers.
09:57 Despite what you've achieved as a two-weight world champion,
10:01 there's still more work to be done.
10:02 There's still dreams to achieve.
10:04 There's still things that you want
10:05 to tick off your bucket list as a pro.
10:08 This sort of fight probably represents that.
10:10 To walk out at your home arena, the MNS Bank Arena,
10:12 what will that mean to you?
10:14 That's one thing, but it's not about,
10:17 this isn't like a retirement speech.
10:19 You've got to win.
10:20 You know, this fight is there to be won.
10:22 You have to make sure that you do your job
10:23 to make sure that this isn't a great event, Natasha,
10:26 but you don't come out the winner.
10:28 Yeah, but listen, I get on at Ben all the time,
10:32 but Ben does his job and secures me the fights.
10:35 I've got to do my job, and that's win them.
10:37 So far, we're on a great run,
10:40 but it's so quickly in boxing, doors shut,
10:44 when the results don't go your way.
10:46 We've both experienced that now,
10:48 and none of us want that to happen again.
10:50 So to keep them doors open and to keep them opportunities
10:53 and them bigger dreams beyond this alive,
10:56 I've got to focus on what happens on Saturday
10:58 and make that dream come true.
10:59 And so boxing in front of me, home crowd,
11:03 it's been an honor this week and a privilege
11:05 to be celebrated and recognized by the community
11:09 and the city that helped shape the woman I've become.
11:11 I've got a mural up on the wall
11:13 where I used to go around and kick a football,
11:15 and a little girl in the street with big dreams,
11:18 and now my little girl's looking at the realization
11:21 of the woman I've become and the mom I've become,
11:24 and it's a credit to this city
11:27 and what it's made me and what it's built up in me
11:30 and I have to be successful.
11:32 And yeah, it's an honor and a privilege.
11:35 - It's not my job to create a fake war of words
11:38 between the two of you, 'cause it simply doesn't exist.
11:40 But at the same time, you know that you're facing
11:42 a top quality fighter with a wily old fox in the corner,
11:46 if I may call you that, Coach,
11:47 or a man that's been there, seen it and done it.
11:49 You know that they will have what they think
11:51 is the game plan to unlock your game plan with Joe Gallagher.
11:56 What sort of fight can we expect as neutral fans?
12:00 - I just think it'll be a good fight.
12:01 You know, we've both got the IQ
12:05 and the ability to be able to box.
12:07 We've both got the skill and the strength
12:11 to be able to fight if we need to.
12:12 That being said, I think our stars will gel
12:16 to make a great fight.
12:18 And yeah, I'm not gonna be a reactive fighter
12:21 and waiting to see what she pulls out the bag.
12:24 I'm gonna be putting my best foot forward
12:26 and making her worry about me from the get-go.
12:29 - Do you believe, Michaela, I mean, you've been here,
12:32 unless my maths is gonna fail me,
12:33 this is fight number four here?
12:35 - Yeah. - Yeah, thank God.
12:36 That was almost embarrassing.
12:38 Do you believe that you spent enough time here
12:40 that you know what to expect
12:41 and you've spent enough time around Natasha
12:44 that you feel that you have the read of her?
12:46 And will you concede anything to us
12:48 of what you two have been working on, you and Coach Al,
12:51 that you can sort of give us
12:52 to add a little bit more to this fight?
12:54 What are you preparing for and what can we expect from you?
12:57 - Well, one, Natasha has a ton of experience, right?
13:01 She has that amateur pedigree.
13:02 She's gone up against plenty of different styles.
13:06 And she's had to learn how to adjust to those styles.
13:09 Same with me.
13:10 That's why I think having that amateur pedigree
13:11 is such an advantage.
13:13 So we both have that,
13:14 but it's gonna be a really strategic fight
13:17 'cause she has a southpaw, I'm an orthodox.
13:19 Obviously, I have a technician in my corner
13:21 who's big on strategy, big on technique.
13:25 And he has a game plan specifically for that
13:27 that I absolutely have to follow
13:29 if I don't wanna get in trouble after the fight.
13:32 But we've been working good on it.
13:34 We've brought in some great sparring partners for this camp
13:38 and I feel confident.
13:39 - I think the number one question
13:42 that everybody's probably been asking you this week
13:44 is how are you feeling at this point in fight week
13:46 compared to previous fight weeks
13:48 when we know that making weight was,
13:51 you always did it, but we know it was hard.
13:53 Do you feel any different in yourself?
13:55 Do you feel any different throughout camp?
13:57 And if so, how?
13:58 - Yeah, everyone thinks that the fight week
14:00 was the hard part of making weight,
14:01 but that's what made 130, or me making 130,
14:04 that's why that was so unique for me
14:06 is it wasn't just about making weight on fight week.
14:09 That weight cut started 10 weeks out.
14:12 I was dieting down from day one of camp.
14:14 And so not having to do that this time
14:17 and maybe doing it a little bit in a more normal way
14:20 and starting to watch my diet three weeks out or so,
14:23 I was able to stay strong throughout camp,
14:26 stay fully fueled, and I just felt a lot happier.
14:29 It was a lot more fun for me.
14:30 I feel like I think clearer.
14:31 - I was just about to say,
14:32 my question probably should have been to Marquette,
14:33 to Mel, and to Al, and to George Ruiz
14:36 in terms of your mood.
14:37 You probably can't answer.
14:38 You probably thought you were always happy,
14:39 but you seem a happy camp.
14:41 Perhaps it is making a difference.
14:43 - Yeah, I mean, for the most part,
14:45 I think we all get a little bit of crankiness,
14:47 but my crankiness started a little bit later.
14:51 It wasn't as long.
14:52 My cranky period wasn't as long.
14:54 But I wasn't able to put on a ton of muscle
14:57 between those fights anyway,
14:58 because I knew I had to diet back down to 130,
15:01 and my weight was just fluctuating so much,
15:03 and that does a lot to your body and a lot to your hormones.
15:05 So I'm just looking forward to seeing,
15:08 I know I have the experience now.
15:09 I don't need to be cutting all that weight.
15:10 I have the experience, I have the strength, I have the skill,
15:12 and I want to be comfortable.
15:15 And so we'll see how that translates on Saturday night,
15:17 and I hope you can see my power,
15:18 and I hope you see how comfortable I feel.
15:21 - Yeah, let's bring in trainer Joe Gallagher.
15:22 I wonder if you have any thoughts
15:24 on Michaela stepping up in weight.
15:26 It's something that the pair of you did
15:28 tremendously successful.
15:29 Was it three weights jumping up,
15:31 and you knew when to go, when not to go,
15:36 and put it all together on the Christian Namus night.
15:39 What do you think of Michaela stepping up in weight,
15:41 and what effect that that could have?
15:46 - Listen, that only for Michaela and her team.
15:49 Can talk about that,
15:50 how she is performing in the gymnasium, sparring.
15:53 But no one really knows till fight night
15:55 how they're going to perform.
15:56 I think Michaela will obviously be relieved
15:58 in the same way Natasha was
15:59 when she had to boil down for Terry Harper, Katie Taylor.
16:03 As you said there,
16:03 there seems to be a bit more happier fight week.
16:06 They don't have the dread of having to make weight.
16:08 They don't have to deal with the loading up
16:11 straight away afterwards.
16:13 And the work that they can do in the gymnasium,
16:15 they can do boxing work.
16:16 They don't have to do making weight work,
16:17 and there's two different things.
16:19 And when you're in a gymnasium
16:20 where you don't have to make weight,
16:21 you can work in boxing and tactics and skill sets
16:24 and different things where sometimes a lot of fighters
16:27 as getting their fight week,
16:28 the tactics and the skills go out the window
16:30 because they've got to concentrate
16:31 and doing big sessions to cut weight.
16:33 And no one really knows how anyone's got to perform
16:36 on fight night when they've got to make big weight cuts.
16:39 It's just a hope and a prayer that hopefully it comes off
16:41 because in training camp,
16:42 you will show me a part of training camp
16:44 where you put your body through losing a big loss weight
16:48 and then go and spar 10, 12 rounds the next day.
16:50 They don't.
16:51 So it's always a hope and a prayer.
16:52 But like I say, Michaela, obviously with Natasha,
16:55 she felt comfortable.
16:56 Natasha always had the power as an amateur.
16:58 She won ABA titles at 75 kilos, 71 kilos.
17:02 So we knew when she moved up,
17:04 she always had the equalizer in her backhand.
17:09 But people have mentioned this week about Natasha's power.
17:12 Listen, it's nothing to do with Natasha's power.
17:13 And I hate about it because we're going into this fight
17:16 on skill set.
17:17 We're on about two girls, two Olympians.
17:19 You don't get to qualify for the Olympics
17:21 and represent your country and just power alone.
17:23 You're on skill set and brains.
17:25 And both these ladies here are class fighters
17:29 and they've got a show on Saturday night,
17:30 boxing and female boxing.
17:32 At it's very best at a quick pace
17:34 with a certain set of game plans going in there
17:37 and set of skills that both girls during the contest,
17:40 we're going to have to switch styles
17:42 of things at work and switch tactics when things
17:45 and be able to adapt and apply in the heat of the moment.
17:47 And that's what's going to happen on Saturday night.
17:49 - Do you mind if I just ask you
17:50 for an unbiased view on Tasha Jonas?
17:53 Just in terms of one, what she's achieved
17:56 and two, what she's like for the other fighters in the gym.
18:00 You know, we know you've got Mikey Talon
18:01 on the bill and Jack Massey,
18:03 but when they look across the gym
18:05 and they see Tasha Jonas, what she came through,
18:08 what she's still achieving now,
18:10 it must be a huge motivator for them.
18:12 And it must be a pleasure for you to have to train her,
18:14 even if her timekeeping is not always A plus.
18:18 - No, listen, I think that's a,
18:20 with her timekeeping, that's something I think
18:22 might've come from the rotunda days.
18:23 Do you know what I mean?
18:24 She isn't the only one that used to come in late
18:25 from the gym there.
18:26 So, but listen, she's a, she's a,
18:28 listen, there's better people out there to speak better
18:32 of her, of what she's done and what she's achieved.
18:35 And this is why we've got to win Saturday night.
18:37 Natasha knows if she doesn't win Saturday night,
18:39 the doors are shut and them doors won't be open again
18:41 for her.
18:42 When she had the speed bump against Ovenoff
18:46 and then lost to Terry Harper and then Katie Taylor,
18:49 it was like, that's her done.
18:52 But the tenacity, the desire in her,
18:53 the fire in her belly showed that she wasn't done.
18:57 And she came back and she won.
18:58 She took her opportunity with both hands
19:00 in the same way that Michaela's going to try
19:01 and do on Saturday night.
19:03 But Natasha Jonas isn't just your normal fighter.
19:06 She's something special.
19:07 Everything she seems to touch, she turns to gold.
19:10 Every time I ask her to do something, she does.
19:12 She's one of the best.
19:13 I've always said I wish I could train 10 Natasha Jonas's.
19:16 She's right up there.
19:17 One of the best that are very trained.
19:19 She's very coachable and she comes in.
19:21 And as you said, there, she's an example to people
19:23 in the gym, the gym now with a new wave of talent,
19:25 new prospects coming in.
19:27 To see Natasha coming in the gym,
19:29 she was ring champion, unified champion,
19:31 broke boxer of the year.
19:33 She comes in, warms up, does her thing,
19:36 trains and everything else.
19:37 She doesn't come in with two or three people with her.
19:40 Attention to detail.
19:41 I can send her video content over an opponent
19:44 and a breakdown and it'll be back to me
19:46 within five, 10 minutes and what she thinks.
19:48 Some lads in the gym, they'll come in the next day
19:50 and go, "Oh shit, I haven't watched that yet.
19:51 "Sorry for swearing."
19:53 But that's it.
19:54 So that just gives you an idea of her.
19:56 And I'm really pleased now.
19:57 She won the WBC belt here in Liverpool,
20:00 which was a big night for her.
20:02 And like I said, we've had some great nights in Liverpool
20:05 and this is another one
20:06 and it's good to be back in Liverpool with Natasha
20:08 and obviously fighting a good name with Michaela Meyer.
20:11 And I think, yeah, it's got to be a good fight.
20:13 So I have nothing but praise for Natasha.
20:15 There isn't big enough words to say how good
20:19 or whatever she is.
20:20 And I think no matter what she touches to now,
20:23 she started managing, now Mikey Talon,
20:26 she's got a manager's coat, or I call it a Steve Woods coat.
20:29 She turns up to events with it on now.
20:31 She's, listen, she's got a bright future in the sport
20:36 and also a career going forward as well.
20:38 - You're gonna get me in trouble.
20:39 Apologies for any of the profanity
20:41 that slipped out there, Joseph.
20:43 Coach Al Mitchell, I want to bring you in.
20:45 I mean, what you don't know about boxing
20:47 isn't worth knowing.
20:48 I mean, one of the OGs, I think I can say that,
20:52 alongside Kay Karoma, who's been co-training for this.
20:56 Are we dwelling too much on the step up in weight?
21:00 Is this something that you were campaigning for
21:02 a long time ago?
21:02 It's of interest to us, but perhaps behind closed doors,
21:05 it's not a big talking point for you guys.
21:07 - First, I'm gonna take my hat off to Nicola Jones coach,
21:11 'cause he's a great coach.
21:12 I watched the strategy that he got,
21:14 that he tells the young lady,
21:16 and the young lady is sound.
21:18 She's a good boxer.
21:20 In my heart, I come way back from the old school
21:22 and everything, I think this is the Tommy Hearns
21:25 and Hagler fight.
21:27 It only is two women, you know?
21:29 Good strategist he is, I watched the game plans
21:32 and everything.
21:33 McKayla lost one bout, and it could've went,
21:35 you know and I know.
21:37 Same for her, you know, it was right there and everything.
21:40 So, the coach always get blamed, you know?
21:46 And I watch her, she talented,
21:49 but what I like about Ms. Jones,
21:51 she got personality, she got class, just like my athlete.
21:57 It's a great fight, everybody should be out
21:59 to see this fight.
22:00 I'm just mad 'cause it's not in the United States.
22:05 Okay?
22:06 But both of them is talent, both of them good boxers.
22:08 I watched the way she rolled on,
22:11 I watched the way she step around, she does the same.
22:14 It's who gonna give us the middle rounds
22:16 that's gonna step up.
22:18 Sometime, it's the coaches that put 'em over the cliff.
22:22 Sometime, it's the athlete, mentally, they say,
22:26 "Shoot."
22:27 I don't wanna use the S word.
22:29 - Yeah, help me out, thank you.
22:29 - But shoot, I want it, you know?
22:32 Both of them had a stepping stones
22:34 that now I wanna lose.
22:36 So, this is what it's all about.
22:38 I think this got a chance of being fight of the year,
22:41 but I guarantee you, I think it's gonna be like
22:43 Tommy Hearns and Hagler.
22:45 And if anybody watched that fight, I tell you,
22:47 every minute, every second, everybody gonna be watching.
22:51 And we should get more boxers like this.
22:55 And what I mean, the personalities,
22:56 they ain't throwing nothing at each other,
22:58 not arguing about each other,
23:00 they just focusing on the fight.
23:01 And that's good coaching.
23:03 Number two is, they put,
23:06 they gonna give us 110% in that ring.
23:09 This is the fight.
23:11 You know, we need more men like these two ladies.
23:14 They stepping up, and they don't care who it is.
23:18 If I could get Tyson, she would try to fight Tyson right now
23:21 if the money's right.
23:22 But let's face it, the women boxer nowadays
23:27 is the one stepping up.
23:28 I don't even pay money no more to see the men.
23:31 The women, they challenging themself,
23:34 they boxing everybody.
23:35 If you got a name or your title,
23:37 or you number one or number two, they want you.
23:40 And that's what boxing should be about.
23:42 Boxing is dying, don't let nobody tell you.
23:45 Men boxing is dying.
23:48 The women is the ones that bringing it up.
23:51 Great fights, and I'm hoping to keep that way.
23:54 - Okay, well I hope you're wrong about some of it,
23:57 but I hope you're wrong about some of it.
24:00 Great words from a great man who's been there,
24:03 seen it and done it, and got the t-shirt or wardrobe full.
24:06 Just if I may finish on this, Michaela and Tasha,
24:10 I'll give you a chance to address each other almost,
24:12 but just because there isn't a war of words here
24:17 doesn't mean that when the first bell rings
24:19 that it isn't gonna be hellfire raining down.
24:21 You're both motivated, you both want this.
24:23 You wanna keep holding your title
24:24 that you worked so hard to get,
24:25 and you wanna make sure that you become
24:26 a two-weight world champion and go home with the belt.
24:29 So will you give us your final thoughts?
24:31 Are we not getting carried away
24:33 with the great sort of camaraderie here,
24:34 but doesn't mean that when the first bell rings
24:36 that the respect isn't gonna go out the window.
24:38 - Yeah, the respect has to go out the window
24:40 that first round because I know that I'm in her hometown.
24:45 I may not have the crowd in my favor,
24:48 and like Coach Al said, this is two quality opponents.
24:53 We're both at the top of our game, tons of experience,
24:56 and so we both don't wanna lose.
24:58 I have no room to let a round or two slide away.
25:02 So it's no respect from that first bell.
25:05 - Do you echo that?
25:06 Great advert for the sport,
25:08 all the hallmarks of a great fight,
25:09 but once that first bell rings,
25:10 you can't afford to be a spectator.
25:13 You have to fight fire with fire.
25:15 - Exactly, yeah, you know,
25:16 when the final bell goes after 10,
25:18 that's when you can,
25:19 we'll go back to being the way we were before,
25:21 but in the first of the 10th round, it's business,
25:25 and that's all it is, it's just business.
25:27 - Ben, just to finish, if Coach Al Mitchell is right,
25:30 Hagler-Herns, then, you know,
25:32 a Fight of the Year contender, and it's your first show,
25:34 so you gotta be having your fingers crossed for this one.
25:37 - Yeah, it's one we've been looking forward to
25:39 for a long time.
25:40 It's just a great fight, two great trainers as well,
25:43 and yeah, regardless of everything
25:45 that they've achieved before, for boxing fans,
25:47 there's so many question marks around this fight.
25:49 Michaela's first venture at welterweight.
25:51 Michaela facing, I think, a southpaw
25:53 for the first time as well.
25:55 Anything can happen in this fight.
25:56 It's two quality operators, and final tickets remaining.
26:00 You know, this is a superstar coming home in your hometown
26:04 in the biggest fight of their career.
26:06 I think it's gonna be electric on Saturday night,
26:08 and I can't wait, thank you to everyone involved.
26:11 - Yeah, not long to wait now.
26:13 Just go and consume some of that buildup content
26:16 on the Boxer, Sky Sports social media channels.
26:19 It's really good buildup.
26:20 Fair play to both of you for getting involved
26:22 and not telling any lies.
26:24 We're gonna break now for head-to-heads.
26:25 Everyone's gonna get a chance for their one-on-ones
26:27 as well, so just again, if everyone can stay seated,
26:30 everyone will get their shot, but thank you for joining us,
26:32 and we'll be back for the weigh-in tomorrow.
