00:10 Welcome in everybody to the country roads air to cleaning Mountaineers now post
00:14 game show I'm Skylar Callen that is Christopher Hall,
00:17 the Mountaineers falling 77 to 63 out in Norman to the Oklahoma Sooners.
00:22 A quick rundown here of the numbers.
00:25 Pat Sumnick was fighting an illness.
00:27 He was questionable going into the day.
00:29 Ended up being cleared played pretty well.
00:31 Considering the circumstances nine points, seven boards, a couple of steals.
00:36 Noah Farrakhan with 14 points on six of 11 shooting from the field and
00:40 then Jalen Moore led the way for Oklahoma with 16 points and five rebounds.
00:46 But really the difference in this one once again, Chris is just the points in
00:50 the paint the out power or the overpowering of bigs in the middle there.
00:57 It's just been one thing after another in terms of defending the paint and
01:02 I just don't know that they're gonna be able to find an answer or
01:06 a cure to that until Jesse Edwards gets back.
01:09 But to me that was really the difference in this one that and
01:13 Oklahoma shooting 66% in the second half that's typically gonna lose you a bunch
01:18 of games.
01:19 >> Yeah, and I mean, Oklahoma is one of the better team rebounders in the league.
01:26 And you saw it on tonight with the guard led them with 10 rebounds.
01:31 He had double double he had 10 second half points as well.
01:34 Really rebounding and just careless turnovers.
01:37 They won the turnover battle per se.
01:41 Even scored more points off turnovers.
01:44 But when you're up six and you turn the ball over three, three times and
01:49 two of them were for fast open court layups and
01:53 start the second half pretty much the same way.
01:57 You're not gonna win a lot of games like that, especially in the big 12 and
02:01 on the road when you just give up three points and probably the points in the paint
02:05 probably are bad, but I probably 12 of those were all first fast break points
02:09 or at least.
02:10 So gotta fix that obviously.
02:13 They just played poorly.
02:15 You needed another team effort on the glass and didn't get it and
02:20 just slowed very slow offensively and
02:25 that's not what they play like Saturday.
02:27 So it's not a surprise that they didn't put consecutive games together, but
02:31 it's a little surprising that it was that far off from what we saw Saturday.
02:36 >> Yeah, it was night and day.
02:37 I mean, looked really in a groove offensively against Texas and
02:41 then tonight was just helter skelter.
02:44 I mean, just throwing the ball all over the damn place.
02:47 I mean, Oklahoma was doing it too.
02:49 I mean, 35 combined turnovers in this game.
02:52 And I think that's probably another thing too.
02:54 I mean, you just mentioned it.
02:55 They did outscore Oklahoma and points off of turnovers.
02:58 But I mean, for them to only get the amount of points off the turnovers that
03:02 they had, that's concerning too.
03:04 I mean, they didn't take advantage of the extra opportunities and for
03:08 a team when you're on the road, you're already short handed.
03:11 Some like you're only somewhat of a center is playing not at 100%.
03:16 You need to have those things go your way.
03:19 But Oklahoma, I mean, they were disjointed in the first half.
03:22 I mean, they went through that one little dry spell there where they felt like
03:26 they didn't score an hour and a half.
03:28 And then all of a sudden they go on a quick mini 80 run and
03:31 that's where really the game changed.
03:33 And West Virginia, I don't think ever rebounded.
03:36 That was just a tough little swing there.
03:39 And the second half, I think they kind of figured some things out offensively.
03:43 But all the little things that happened to teams,
03:47 what their full complimented roster, you can get over some of the things
03:52 that happened like the Noah Farrakhan thing for me.
03:56 That's something probably not a lot of people were talking about.
03:59 He has the big crazy dunk, right?
04:02 And then he gets the technical right after that.
04:05 You can't afford to have those types of things happen
04:08 when everything's going against you in the first place.
04:11 And then you just turn the momentum right back into Oklahoma's favor.
04:15 You give them opportunities at the charity strike.
04:18 You just can't have those things happen.
04:20 Yeah, I mean, it's a terrible call.
04:22 And that's just kind of how the night went.
04:24 I mean, Ofer got a technical or whatever it was.
04:28 Oh, the flop at the end.
04:29 My goodness.
04:30 Running next to him.
04:31 So they were both horrendous calls.
04:33 I mean, what are you going to do?
04:34 Just that kind of night.
04:36 And they're just not good enough to overcome it.
04:38 When things aren't going well, it's a team like last year.
04:42 We saw it under Huggins when the officials aren't on their side per se
04:46 or the 50/50 calls aren't going their way.
04:49 They get frustrated, and it leaves a bad place.
04:52 And that's what -- just continue to see it.
04:55 I don't -- it's been that trend for West Virginia basketball
04:59 for quite some time, really, since the Jibahlon Carter era.
05:03 And especially the way they've kind of transitioned.
05:06 They did it under Huggins where it was more offensive players.
05:09 When things aren't going their way, they kind of shrink in the moment.
05:13 So we're going to have to figure something out.
05:16 I don't know if, you know, either can probably fix it,
05:20 but it's not going to happen in months.
05:22 You can't let things like that dictate the rest of the night.
05:27 You just got to continue to play and continue to battle.
05:30 And it's just really been the same thing for going on five years now.
05:35 Yeah.
05:36 If you're not getting the calls, you're not getting the calls.
05:38 You can't just stop and just give up.
05:40 Six rebounds in the second half.
05:42 I posted that.
05:43 There's three minutes left.
05:44 They had six rebounds.
05:45 So in the last three minutes, they didn't even get another rebound.
05:48 That's a team that quit.
05:49 I'm helping yourself out.
05:50 No, that's a team that quit right there.
05:52 So 19 rebounds.
05:53 They got 33.
05:54 They had, I believe, yeah, 10 offensive rebounds.
05:59 They had six.
06:00 I know at one point,
06:01 they had six offensive rebounds in the second half alone.
06:05 So they had matched them on offensive rebounds in the second half.
06:09 Yeah, I mean, I think, too, like,
06:11 we talked about it all non-conference seemingly about how, like,
06:15 who's going to be this next player that steps up and be that kind of at the
06:19 time the premier score before they got Kerr back and they had Raekwon in the
06:22 mix, Farrakhan, who played well tonight.
06:26 But, I mean, you look at some of these guys,
06:29 Kerr and Raekwon specifically, and it just looks like they're pressing.
06:34 It looks like they're trying to figure things out and do too much of their own.
06:38 You know, Raekwon's taking a lot of contested shots,
06:40 a lot of shots that he probably shouldn't be taking.
06:42 But to some degree, you can't really blame him because he knows he's got to be
06:46 the one that scores the ball.
06:48 And then Kerr Carissa, I mean, like I've said a couple of games ago,
06:52 I've been disappointed by Kerr.
06:54 I don't know if it's just a system thing,
06:57 if it's a chemistry thing,
06:59 if it's because he didn't get to play a non-conference.
07:02 I don't know, but they need to get more out of Kerr Carissa offensively.
07:07 Four points and four assists, that's not going to cut it.
07:11 No, he's struggled, and some of that has to do with just the guys around him.
07:15 And when guys get up on the guards off the ball or the forwards,
07:19 it's not there when it should be, and he just misreads it momentarily,
07:23 and it causes a turnover.
07:25 So no room for error.
07:28 They just pretty much reverted back to who they were before Texas.
07:34 Is it another wake-up call?
07:35 We'll see.
07:36 I've been saying the same thing kind of for years now.
07:39 I don't know how many more bad examples you need to kind of figure it out.
07:43 It's a team thing.
07:44 Everyone has to buy in.
07:46 Everyone bought in Saturday, and it just seemed like everybody today,
07:49 whether it was the travel, they did take 10 hours of travel yesterday.
07:53 Didn't get to practice really yesterday, so maybe that was part of it.
07:57 But, I mean, teams are going to go through this all year long.
08:00 I see other teams that do hit similar adversity at that point.
08:05 Granted, they probably played together.
08:07 But, again, you can't go from Saturday to this.
08:10 So I mentioned it Saturday that the film's going to be out
08:14 on what they did successfully.
08:16 Will they be able to adjust?
08:19 Porter's a very good coach, and he adjusted well.
08:22 The scout really is out on this team.
08:24 If you've got the athletes, just go put pressure on the ball.
08:27 Yeah.
08:28 Because they can't really get off ball screens.
08:30 They really don't know how to do things off the ball.
08:32 It's a problem in college.
08:34 Athletics everywhere.
08:35 There's not a whole lot of self-creation either.
08:37 Like they've got to -- No, they don't.
08:40 I mean, there's no real concept.
08:42 So a lot of it's just not being able to practice together
08:44 and figure it out and how each other work.
08:47 And some of it is just forcing the issue,
08:51 and some of it is just sloppy play,
08:53 poor fundamentals.
08:55 I mean, things can't get any tougher, right?
08:57 Oh, yeah.
08:58 Wait, Saturday they play Kansas.
08:59 So, yeah, this will get interesting.
09:03 But, hey, it is a chance.
09:04 And as I said before, I think after the game on Saturday
09:08 against Texas, look, Kansas has had some really good teams
09:12 coming to Morgantown over the years and lost some games
09:14 they probably shouldn't have.
09:16 And, you know, West Virginia fans,
09:18 they get into this game every single year.
09:21 So crazier things have happened.
09:24 But if you can find a way to beat Kansas, I mean, hey,
09:27 you went two out of your last three against ranked opponents,
09:30 you've got to feel pretty good about yourselves.
09:32 You're going to lose some games on the road.
09:34 It's going to be tough to do in this league.
09:36 But the schedule does lighten up a little bit because after Kansas,
09:41 you have Oklahoma State, which is going to be sandwiched
09:44 around two of the newcomers, UCF and Cincinnati,
09:48 who are playing somewhat decent right now,
09:50 but they're still going to be a tough --
09:52 UCF just won a game tonight, I believe.
09:54 Did they really?
09:55 Yeah, they just beat a ranked team.
09:58 So there you have it, Big 12 basketball, baby.
10:01 So West Virginia losers once again, 77 to 63.
10:06 They are now 6-11 on the season.
10:08 They'll be back in action at the Coliseum this Saturday
10:11 at 4 o'clock, tipping off against number three Kansas.
10:15 And you can catch that one on ESPN.
10:17 Plus, if you're not in the building for that one,
10:20 we'll have the postgame coverage.
10:21 Chris will be live from the Coliseum.
10:23 And that'll do it for us here tonight.
10:25 West Virginia 77-63 on the wrong end of this one.
