00:02 This is one of those shows that just
00:04 shows what animation can do.
00:06 And everybody is pushing toward that goal of making
00:08 the best show that they can.
00:10 Rick?
00:12 Unity.
00:12 For the Unity episode, we really
00:15 wanted to play up the emotion of the relationship
00:17 between her and Rick.
00:18 We really put a lot of effort into those moments
00:21 and making sure that all of our Unity drawings
00:23 were really strong and really impactful.
00:25 We got to do a lot of really fun drawings of her
00:27 in kind of excruciating poses where she's extremely pained.
00:32 And then we had the Bigfoot episode,
00:34 which was a lot of entourage characters.
00:38 We had to come up with strategies
00:39 to populate entire armies, having
00:41 to find ways to draw the armies in multiple instances
00:45 because Rick is constantly blowing up these armies.
00:48 Hey, look, Morty.
00:50 I'm a leg.
00:51 There's the Rick is a leg gag.
00:53 And then there's a return to the Rick is a leg gag later on.
00:56 And Rick says, no, that was the second time I did it.
00:59 We designed Rick as a right foot in the first instance
01:02 and a left foot in the second instance.
01:03 So it was two different occasions
01:05 that Rick turned himself into a leg.
01:07 We made sure to make that clear for what it's worth.
01:10 He's crunching the numbers.
01:11 I thought he was talking about taxes, but he's crunching us.
01:14 "Merry Crumbs" was very heavy on design.
01:16 The letters and numbers characters
01:18 originally from the season 2 episode tag,
01:21 they were actually meant to be flat.
01:23 They weren't supposed to have a three-dimensional form.
01:25 For this episode to work, we had to create those characters
01:29 in a more three-dimensional form.
01:30 When you get into rigid shapes in 3D space,
01:33 you have to be a little more disciplined about it.
01:34 And it actually required a lot of work that I didn't foresee.
01:37 When you actually get into the weeds of it,
01:39 you realize, oh, it's actually pretty difficult to track
01:41 details on a rigid character.
01:44 You little turd!
01:47 There's a really great nightmare sequence
01:49 where Morty falls through the hole.
01:51 And it's pure darkness.
01:52 It's pure just black void.
01:54 These creatures are a little bit more illustrative
01:56 compared to what the typical Rick and Morty style is.
02:00 A lot of what makes something creepy
02:01 is not seeing the whole thing or feeling like there's more
02:04 of something that you're not getting.
02:06 So these creatures needed to have
02:08 a sort of formless exterior where certain ends would sort
02:11 of blend into the blackness of the background.
02:13 So you kind of didn't know where the creature ended or started.
02:17 Should scare people a little bit.
02:19 Definitely scares the hell out of Morty.
02:21 So--
02:21 [LAUGHTER]
02:22 It's hitting my button!
02:23 Fuck yeah!
02:24 On the wall, motherfuckers!
02:25 It's not worth it!
02:26 Not worth it!
02:27 Every episode's different.
02:28 Every episode has something that we've
02:30 never encountered before.
02:32 And that makes coming to work every day.
02:34 Stay exciting, stay fresh.
02:36 Hope the viewers appreciate how visually adventurous
02:38 the show is and how fun it is.
02:39 Because we definitely have fun while we're working on it.
02:41 And we hope that fun is infectious and carries
02:43 through to the audience.
