" SCREAMING PAIN IMPOSSIBLE TO SWALLOW" - GAYBURG, November 21, 2022

Borderless is a gay love story between Denys, Ukrainian boy to whom the war killed the parents, with the immense pain of a loss that today many Ukrainians are facing; and Dmitry, Russian soldier on Russian soil, who deserts the army in the moment he is sent to war in Ukraine, because loving a Ukrainian boy he cannot make war against the Ukrainians. Their desperate rush to rejoin in a loving embrace will lead them to challenge all boundaries, even the last one.

Borderless is also a video clip, a short film without dialogues whose scenic action and storyline are immersed in the music, leading us toward the depths of the human soul and the sources of life. Because piano music touches the deepest chords of our common humanity, accompanies us in pain and joy, into tears and wonders, beyond the barriers of language and religion, nationality and sexual identity.

The idea of the fiction gay short film Borderless arises from my outrage and a sense of powerlessness at Russia’s military attack on Ukraine in February 2022. Through the Information Channel we perceive war and its dead as distant on our thin screens, without really being affected by it: the dramatic personal stories of the Ukrainians are buried under the rubble.

I also had a question (still unanswered): what would a Russian guy in love with a Ukrainian girl do, when Putin sends the army to Ukraine and the guy is asked to join the Russian army in Ukraine? What about his and her feelings, conflicts, choices?

Therefore I decided to narrate Borderless, a tragedy of love - the most unlikely but not far-fetched - to give back to the lost lives a hypothetical face, voice and story, so that, by empathising with the experiences of Denys, his grandmother and Dmitry, we could perceive the disasters of war on our skin. Only that way - I thought - we could perhaps get moved, raising collective reactions to stop the war.

A childhood dream, sure, yet no less than all those that have changed the world. In a world dominated by selfishness, manipulations of consumerism and ephemeral passions, the love between the protagonists of this fictional short film redeems humanity, stands pure and indelible, against every difference of sex, flag and frontier, as only love might save the world.

I DEEPLY APOLOGIES to all the UKRAINIANS who felt hurt by the love of a Ukrainian with a Russian (one out of millions) in the current catastrophic ongoing war. After reading your comments I learned that I cannot understand the immense pain you are feeling across destroyed families and devastated cities.

You have my deepest respect and sorrow, as innocent victims of this unjust war. At the same time the reduction of a people (any people) to its criminals does not find my understanding, nor does it find hate.

Borderless cultivates the small, often invisible, seed of love. Borderless has a blind trust in its power, in its boundless nature, in the rebirth of love from its ashes, soon or late even in the driest deserts (or hearts).
