  • il y a 8 mois
On Stage 8 of #Dakar2024 the 2023 winner Kevin Benavides took the victory, whilst it is still close in the overall with Ricky Brabec increasing his lead from one second to 42 seconds from Ross Branch.

After the disappointment yesterday of dropping out of contention to win this year's Dakar Mattias Ekström responded well to win Stage 8. Ekström's teammate Carlos Sainz made progress overall, increasing his lead at the top of the rankings to 24'47".

00:00 [Sounds of traffic]
00:04 I'll wait.
00:05 [Sounds of traffic]
00:08 Oops.
00:09 I'll go up.
00:10 [Sounds of traffic]
00:12 Everyone's okay.
00:13 Okay.
00:14 [Sounds of traffic]
00:19 [Birds chirping]
00:21 Humphrey, where are we going?
00:23 It's a Zumba boxing class I saw on Insta.
00:26 Is that it over there?
00:27 Knees wide, then side to side, that's it.
00:30 And squat.
00:31 And bounce.
00:32 And bounce.
00:33 Good, Kevin.
00:34 Nacho, I can see you at the back there, slacking.
00:37 Come on.
00:39 Now grab it.
00:40 And pull it.
00:41 Grab it.
00:42 And pull it.
00:43 Nice, Kevin.
00:44 Luciano, stop yawning.
00:45 Big stage today, boys.
00:47 Let's go.
00:48 I'm third overall.
00:49 It's a tight fight up there.
00:51 So, yeah, we're going to keep doing our best day by day, stage by stage, until the finish.
00:56 No, it was like those old school sitting down, jumping off the gym.
00:59 [Mimics engine]
01:01 That's it, tight.
01:02 It's crazy, you know, but we still got a lot of racing to do, and see how the stage plays out,
01:06 and just going to have some fun on my motorbike.
01:08 One second in it.
01:10 Yeah, that's pretty wild, huh?
01:12 Yeah, I mean, we're just trying to maintain.
01:16 [Engine revving]
01:18 Over 60.
01:19 All right.
01:20 Good to see you.
01:21 Over 60.
01:22 Some of the riders already feel like they've been to hell, this Dakar, today.
01:26 They actually go there, and there's even a non-timed highway section in the middle.
01:32 And it did, indeed, prove to be hell for some of the bikes who struggled with the short cut-offs on the dunes,
01:37 hidden waypoints, and unpredictable sand conditions under the wheels.
01:42 [Engine revving]
01:47 [Music]
02:00 Adrian Van Beveren led for much of today's special, but made a tactical stop with 10k left.
02:05 Who win the stage?
02:09 The Benavides brothers, nobody else.
02:12 [Music]
02:15 Kevin and Luciano Benavides' father said yesterday he'll be happier when his son stops racing.
02:20 Today, his boys tested that stance by finishing first and second on a Dakar stage for the first time.
02:26 First born was first again.
02:29 I feel good. I enjoyed my ride today.
02:32 The last part was fun.
02:35 Yeah, I think I did a good work, so we need to continue pushing.
02:38 It's Benavides' day at Dakar 46.
02:41 They had been first and third on stage 13 last year.
02:44 They're currently Dakar and World Champions, respectively, but this is another landmark family achievement.
02:50 [Music]
03:03 Van Beveren's tactic was to lose enough time to start behind his rivals on tomorrow's tricky navigation stage,
03:09 but his strategy didn't work out.
03:11 He didn't lose enough time to be behind Brabeck, Branch and Korneko on the road tomorrow,
03:15 and in trying, he lost out on the stage win too.
03:18 Third today and 12 minutes off the overall lead.
03:22 [Music]
03:26 The Frenchman, though, is absolutely in with a shot of winning his first Dakar.
03:31 Only time will tell whether the three minutes gained today or the unsuccessful game plan will be more significant.
03:38 [Music]
03:40 Now, in the true spirit of the Dakar, the original Baimotul category, formerly Malmortant,
03:45 where riders have no assistance at all throughout the Dakar, Tobias Ebster has over an hour on Jérôme Martini.
03:51 [Music]
03:56 And there's now 42 seconds between Brabeck and Branch.
03:59 The top five could all still win it.
04:01 As well as the Dakar standing, some riders also compete for points in the World Rally Raid Championships.
04:07 [Music]
04:09 In the quads, the 2021 champion Manuel Andujar was denied victory yesterday.
04:14 Today, he trailed the reigning champion by more than 10 minutes after 336 kilometers.
04:20 The Frenchman lost all that advantage, though, handing Andujar a second special of the year.
04:25 [Music]
04:34 [Music]
04:45 Fourth Dakar, and for sure, it's the toughest one.
04:49 At five, six in the night.
04:52 Crazy, crazy Dakar. Crazy edition.
04:56 [Music]
04:59 We saw the waypoint on the trippy.
05:01 We saw the arrow.
05:02 We tried to go on this dune, but I didn't expect this is so tough.
05:07 [Music]
05:10 This Dakar, we have to help. We helped people on the first day.
05:14 They rolled over, we helped them. Now this karma came back to us.
05:18 We are happy.
05:19 I didn't sleep much last night. I woke up tired.
05:23 As soon as we started, I immediately understood that it was going to be hard.
05:26 [Music]
05:31 I have my parents here, so it's pretty great.
05:34 I'm very proud of my son.
05:36 [Music]
05:41 Doing the Dakar is...
05:43 [Music]
05:47 It's being part of people who are strong, I would say.
05:52 Mental, physical, psychic, super. And the abilities.
05:57 [Music]
06:04 I'm really proud.
06:05 [Music]
06:07 With Ekstrom and Peder Hansel out of contention,
06:09 Audi's hopes of a first ever Dakar lie with Carlos Sainz.
06:12 Next days will be tough. Yes, we will fight especially.
06:16 [Music]
06:26 You can never be sure of victory, especially on the Dakar.
06:29 Everything can change until the last day.
06:32 So even if Carlos is leading, we know it can change for us and for him.
06:36 [Music]
06:42 After 63 kilometers, engine stop, blocked.
06:46 I am really disappointed, you know, because I don't really enjoy a lot this Dakar,
06:52 because from first day we have always a problem, you know.
06:58 I went last two Dakar without any problems and we need to talk for the future.
07:04 Alatia never got going again and retired from the stage.
07:08 Seb Loeb was first on the road looking to close the 19 minute deficit to Sainz.
07:12 He had a one minute lead of the special into the final 100K,
07:15 but a rare mistake meant a missed waypoint, a U-turn,
07:19 an 11 minute waste of time and a 6 minute loss to Sainz.
07:23 Matthias Ekström eventually got back to the bivouac at 9pm last night.
07:27 He said it was embarrassing the team couldn't prepare the car properly for yesterday.
07:31 But today the Swedes ride was as tasty as a plate of Ikea meatballs and he flew to victory.
07:36 [Music]
07:42 We had a good stage. I enjoyed from the beginning to the end.
07:45 We had no big hiccups, so it was a good day.
07:49 I have the same strategies in day number one.
07:54 You know, finish every stage without big issues.
07:57 Loeb's troubles, great news for Carlos Sainz.
08:00 Five minutes behind when the Frenchman had to doughnut,
08:03 he played the smart cookie and came in fourth.
08:05 Extending his advantage was the icing on the cake.
08:07 Loeb has 24 minutes to turn over.
08:10 [Music]
08:16 It was another solid if unspectacular drive from Brazilian Lucas Moraes who finished seventh,
08:20 enough to keep him in the podium places.
08:23 [Music]
08:27 Just over eight minutes per day needed for the Frenchman Sebastian Loeb.
08:31 As well as the Dakar standing, some drivers also compete for points in the World Rally Raid Championships.
08:36 Seb Loeb chose not to.
08:38 [Music]
08:41 After Eric Gottschall's DQ, Mitch Guthrie leads the overall in the T3s and his goals are simple.
08:47 Clean stages, no problems, bring it home.
08:49 Second today ticks all the boxes.
08:52 But finishing in his hometown, Salah Al Saif said, "I'm here, so hail."
08:56 And the Saudi fans did. Hail Salah. Hail the great man. Hail.
08:59 His win the perfect antidote to a difficult few days for local rally fans.
09:04 Christina Anceletto a long way back chasing Mitch.
09:08 Joao Ferreira sped to successive special successes in the SSVs.
09:13 This time he put three minutes into Xavier Dessautry and in doing so became the Frenchman's main rival.
09:19 It's Polaris versus Can-Am head-to-head.
09:21 Dessautry remains in charge for now, seven minutes the gap.
09:25 [Music]
09:37 Sarah Price slips to third as Joao moves up.
09:40 [Music]
09:45 Upper class and top of the class.
09:47 Mitchell van den Brink was 22 years old yesterday.
09:50 Yep, that's all.
09:51 He's been on the Dakar since he was 16.
09:53 He took a first victory of the year today.
09:56 The Eurol Rally Sport crew managed to hold off Martin Maciek who finished second, 1.18 behind.
10:02 [Music]
10:05 Alish Lopreich was also in the fight for stage victory,
10:08 but he lost speed at the end and finished 13 minutes 45 seconds behind van den Brink.
10:13 [Music]
10:15 In the general rankings, the Dutchman climbs into second place ahead of Lopreich
10:20 and is now one hour 50 minutes behind Maciek.
10:23 [Music]
10:31 As we leave you tonight, it is with great sadness we learn today of the death of 45-year-old Spanish rider Carlos Falcón
10:39 who suffered a heavy fall on stage two.
10:42 To his family and his loved ones, we all give our most sincere condolences.
