A Christmas gift of discarded trees for Stockholm's fish

Every year, dozens of discarded Christmas trees are thrown into Stockholm's icy waters, which provide a welcome habitat for marine wildlife once sunk to the bottom. Since 2016, more than 1,000 trees have been tied together, weighed down with rocks and deposited into the sea to help restore the endangered ecosystem of the Swedish capital's waterways.

00:31 Everything's biodegradable.
00:33 And then we throw them out into the water, and they will
00:37 sink down to the bottom.
00:39 If you look around here, there's been a lot of building,
00:42 and we have a lot of boats going in and out.
00:45 So we, as humans, need to keep these coastal ways clear.
00:50 So there's not a lot of vegetation.
00:53 There's not a lot of reeds.
00:55 And those are really important habitats for fish that have
00:58 gone missing.

01:23 places to hide in here.
01:26 There are all these branches, and there are the pine needles
01:28 as well.
01:29 So they're really great places to place the roe, and also
01:33 really great places for juvenile fish to hide from
01:36 bigger fish.
