00:00 Iowa is freezing cold. There have been blizzard warnings in place and the forecast for here
00:07 in the capital Des Moines is for temperatures to get below minus 25 degrees Celsius. That's
00:15 complicating the campaigning in the final stages of what is the first big test in the
00:23 US election year.
00:25 Iowa is the first state where Republicans will have their say on who they want to take
00:31 on Joe Biden at the presidential election in November. And if the polls are correct,
00:36 there's one person with a massive lead, Donald Trump.
00:40 The former president is considered the frontrunner despite facing all sorts of legal problems,
00:46 including 91 criminal charges in four separate cases and attempts to stop him from running
00:53 in certain states. But many of his supporters are still planning to back him in what's known
00:58 as a caucus here in a couple of days time. And they say even if he became the nominee
01:04 and then was convicted in any of these cases, it wouldn't affect their vote in November.
01:11 Not mine. But I'm pretty confident that's not going to happen.
01:16 Why is that?
01:19 Just because the charges are trumped up. So, you know, I think he'll be proven to be not
01:26 guilty.
01:31 Other Republicans want to see Donald Trump's political career come to an end. They're throwing
01:36 their support behind his main rivals, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis or former United Nations
01:42 Ambassador Nikki Haley.
01:44 Donald Trump is just too polarising. I don't think he can lead our legislators on Capitol
01:51 Hill. They just have too much against him. I think it's time for a change.
01:55 The weather has forced candidates to cancel or rearrange their events. And it could also
02:01 have a big impact on who actually turns out to vote this week, meaning there's a lot of
02:07 uncertainty in this race in what is going to be a really unpredictable year ahead.
