00:00 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:03 >> Obviously, that was not the game we wanted on a lot of levels.
00:10 And the most glaring thing was just the amount of points we gave up in the paint.
00:17 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:20 For a lot of different reasons.
00:21 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:23 But when you do that, that's why the field goal percentage is what it is,
00:28 those are shots that they're gonna make a high percentage.
00:33 >> What is it about this team's habit of not getting back in time,
00:40 getting back in position to try and contest shots and defend and keep it for guys?
00:46 >> Ironically, at halftime, we'd only given up eight points in transition.
00:49 So we've talked so much about transition defense against this team and
00:54 really throughout the course of the season.
00:57 And we did a better job getting back.
00:59 I think it's difficult when we miss some easy opportunities early.
01:05 It's hard to defend against those.
01:09 And then we had some turnovers.
01:11 It's hard to defend against those.
01:12 But there weren't pass aheads, that wasn't how.
01:17 They were in more of a half court game.
01:20 But again, we didn't do a good enough job keeping the ball out of the paint.
01:25 And they were on the rim.
01:27 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:34 >> When you have Capella coming back and you talk about points of the paint,
01:38 of course, all the blame can't be on the big man.
01:41 But can you just talk more about just his impact coming back and just-
01:46 >> Yeah, I mean, I don't,
01:47 some of the possessions where they were on the rim,
01:54 that's, you can't put, nobody can defend against that.
01:58 That's not Clint, that's us collectively.
02:00 And frankly, he bailed us out at times.
02:03 And when there's situations where our guards can't get back in front of the ball,
02:08 for whatever reason, the possession that occurs,
02:12 Clint's gotta switch onto the ball and handle that.
02:16 And then got cutters and people on the rim.
02:20 So a lot of it, our ability to stay in front of the ball and
02:25 to do that collectively, it's not just the guy on the ball that's gotta be better.
02:30 Where they're not straight line drives, it's the other guys that
02:35 have to have an awareness to take up space and
02:39 make them see bodies and not see those driving lanes.
02:42 And have awareness of cutters.
02:44 When you're doing that, there's gonna be cutters and you have to take on cutters.
02:48 So it's an accumulation of things throughout a possession and
02:51 then all of a sudden you're asking somebody that's down there,
02:56 whether it's Clint or O or JJ or
03:00 whoever to try to make a play that's a really difficult play to make.
03:03 So I don't attribute that to our rim protection as much as I do
03:10 to the things that are happening to allow them to get in that area.
03:16 >> So coach, you touched on the points in the paint.
03:18 The three meetings we played against Indiana, they've shot above 70% of the rim.
03:23 So do you feel like that's something to do with the way they attack our defense or
03:27 could you speak to it?
03:28 >> Yeah, I mean they drive you.
03:30 And they're pretty relentless with that.
03:32 If one guy can't drive, they're trying to move you and then the next guy's driving.
03:37 So it requires you to really defend throughout the entire possession.
03:42 And when they drive it from multiple positions,
03:46 you're in a lot of help situations and you gotta recover.
03:49 But that's the game.
03:50 That's the game.
03:51 And we just gotta do it.
03:55 That gets back to execution, whether it's staying in front of the ball,
03:59 whether it's picking off defense.
04:01 We didn't wanna get up and get too aggressive on pick and
04:03 roll because that opens things up.
04:06 And then we adjusted and did more of that as the game progressed to try to impact
04:10 the ball that way.
04:11 Then someone's in a close out situation and
04:14 you end up with the same similar situation as far as it comes down to
04:19 five guys defending and not allowing the ball to get that deep.
04:24 Cuz when it does, it's very difficult no matter who you're playing against and
04:30 no matter who's defending.
04:31 The ball gets in that situation.
04:33 Good things are generally not gonna happen.
04:36 >> I know Trey has been dealing with some bumps and bruises.
04:40 And I know you guys don't like to look for excuses, but
04:43 he's kind of been in a little bit of a slump over the last few games.
04:46 Or some curious if that shoulder has been bothering him a little bit or
04:50 maybe that little tumble that he had.
04:52 >> Yes, I know they're very physical, particularly with him.
04:59 And he was here three, four hours early getting treatment,
05:04 getting ready to play, and he's a gamer.
05:07 He posts for every game.
05:10 I know when he came out, he obviously got hit again.
05:14 I haven't had a chance to talk to our performance people, but
05:17 he's been banged up and he's been playing through it.
05:19 And tonight was a tough game.
05:21 >> Coach, for you guys, I know you wanna let this one digest a little bit, but
05:26 we are on a back to back, you've got the Wizards tomorrow.
05:29 What kind of response are you looking forward for your team tomorrow?
05:32 >> Yeah, this is one of the things about this league,
05:35 with 82 games, you do get the opportunity to bounce back.
05:41 And you don't have to sit in a game like this for a week.
05:47 So we need to bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow and
05:51 do whatever we need to do really mentally to be in that place.
05:55 >> Thanks, coach.
