00:10 We look at the rise of Itzy.
00:13 And Yvonne Cornejo is the future of regional Mexican music.
00:16 Welcome to another edition of Billboard News.
00:22 I'm Tetris Kelly. It's Friday, January 12th and we got a brand new cover star.
00:26 But first, let's get into our Friday Music Gap.
00:29 We've entered a new era. Ariana Grande is back and she's saying yes and...
00:42 And this self-empowering bop is definitely not safe for word.
00:45 We'll have more new music throughout the show.
00:55 But now it's time to get to our last future of genre cover star.
00:58 Yvonne Cornejo is the future of regional Mexican music.
01:02 Around the time that Tercer Elemento was dropping music, Rafa Caro, I remember I heard that.
01:09 And it stood out to me so much. I think that was just like, "I actually like this."
01:20 At the time, I wouldn't really listen to regional music.
01:23 It was more of like my dad's mariachi music and like the old school stuff.
01:27 A couple years later, Natanel Cano drops, you know, "Corridos Tumbados."
01:31 He's definitely like a pioneer for this new genre that you call
01:36 that Serreno and like "Corridos Tumbados."
01:39 So many people got inspiration from Nata.
01:42 He really took a big step and just changed the whole "corridos."
01:46 I feel like a lot of people just adapted to that quickly.
01:50 I do get some surprise sometimes when, like, for example, in my shows, I do meet and greets.
01:56 And after the shows, like sometimes even the moms are like crying
02:01 and telling me how happy they are to have brought their daughter.
02:06 And it's a great feeling when you just see the mom and the daughter crying.
02:10 It's heartwarming just hearing everybody's stories.
02:14 And it made me realize how much power you have towards, you know, your supporters.
02:20 And just that motivates me more to keep doing what I'm doing.
02:24 They're like all my mini judges.
02:28 And I just, I want to make sure I make them proud.
02:31 Every time I drop an album, there's something that feels bigger than the one before.
02:37 And I think this album is definitely going to feel bigger.
02:41 And just, you know, I feel like a musician after a year, you know,
02:47 there's improvements and like little things even musically and lyrically.
02:52 And the sound is just going to be a lot better.
02:55 It's definitely exciting that the charts are literally full of, you know, Mexican artists.
03:00 Yeah, I'm excited for the next year to drop the album and be a part of those charts.
03:05 For the full cover profile, head to Billboard.com.
03:09 Lil Nas X is no stranger to pushing boundaries and his latest track, "J Christ" is no different.
03:14 He brings all the religious and pop culture references in the music video.
03:26 You know, we always bring you the latest in music news and here's our top story.
03:38 Peace out!
03:39 Peace out!
03:39 Peace out!
03:40 Peace out!
03:40 Peace out!
03:41 A town down.
03:43 Usher, Jungkook, J Balvin and LeBron?
03:48 A teaser for Usher's halftime show has dropped and he has all the biggest talent by his side.
03:53 We are so ready for Usher to take the stage at this year's Apple Music Super Bowl halftime show.
04:05 And the teaser he dropped this morning is mind-blowing.
04:08 ARMY lost it to see Jungkook.
04:10 Let's not forget JK has sang about LeBron James.
04:17 Of course, I had to play that.
04:23 LeBron and J Balvin are also in the ad.
04:26 The spot takes you through Usher's iconic career, all before this year's game on February 11th.
04:32 As he gets ready to release his upcoming ninth studio album, Coming Home, on February 9th.
04:37 The big game will air live on CBS.
04:40 21 Savage is back this time with some solo music and he's living the American dream.
04:46 But the new album also has some impressive features like NHIE with Doja Cat.
04:58 Speaking of new music, Kali Uchi's fourth album is here.
05:02 And she stopped by our studio to tell us all about it.
05:06 Congratulations.
05:07 Thank you.
05:07 So excited for you.
05:08 How have you been keeping this a secret?
05:10 What's been the hardest part of that?
05:11 I had to do some shows and I was on a times list so I had to do a red carpet.
05:15 That was really hard.
05:16 And then when the time does come, what are you most excited for about being a mom?
05:21 I don't know.
05:21 It's so much to be excited for honestly.
05:23 So it's hard to say just one thing.
05:25 You won't know until it happens.
05:26 Yeah, exactly.
05:27 The flower for me, it always symbolized timelessness and being a mom.
05:32 It always symbolized timelessness, femininity, luxury.
05:37 It has an eerie, mystical quality about it as well.
05:41 And it's also the national flower of Colombia.
05:44 So for me, it all tied in.
05:46 And then I didn't find out that I was pregnant until later in my rollout.
05:50 But actually, it's also the flower of fertility.
05:53 So it actually all came together perfectly.
05:56 Being that I'm Latina and I'm a music, you kind of get categorized as a Latin artist
06:02 even when not all of the music that I do is technically Latin music.
06:05 Yeah, exactly.
06:06 So realizing that it's in a way, people view it as its own genre when really,
06:12 like how I was saying earlier, there's so many different genres that have to do with
06:16 Latin music in the first place.
06:18 There's so much different types of music you can make.
06:20 Or in my case, where I don't only make music in Spanish, I also make a lot of music in English
06:25 and a lot of different genres in English as well.
06:27 So I think that in a way, it can be a bit limiting because of that.
06:31 So for me, definitely part of what I want to do and accomplish with my work is
06:37 expand the way that people view all of the things that we're capable of doing.
06:41 For the full interview, head over to Billboard.com.
06:44 Kid Cudi took a little break from battling online trolls to release some new beats.
06:48 Here's "Insano."
06:57 He recruited some of the biggest rappers on this album, like Travis Scott and A$AP Rocky.
07:02 Time to talk about ITZY.
07:07 They just dropped their new album, "Born To Be."
07:09 And if you don't know much about them, well, don't worry.
07:12 We've got you covered.
07:12 ITZY is no stranger to the Billboard charts.
07:17 The K-pop girl group first charted back in 2019 and since then have racked up
07:21 multiple entries across different charts.
07:24 And with the release of their new album, "Born To Be," it's just the beginning.
07:28 This is Billboard Explains the rise of ITZY.
07:37 Since ITZY made their mark on the music scene,
07:39 the girl group has appeared on a bunch of different Billboard charts,
07:42 including the Billboard 200, thanks to albums like "Crazy in Love," the first album,
07:47 which peaked at No. 11 and featured the track "Loco."
07:50 And "Checkmate" mini-album, which peaked at No. 8.
07:53 That same EP also debuted at No. 1 on the World Albums chart,
08:03 taking the top spot for a week in July 2022.
08:07 Other notable chart highlights include
08:09 four songs on the Global 200, including "In the Morning," which peaked at No. 34.
08:13 Ten songs on the World Digital Albums chart,
08:19 including "DALLA DALLA."
08:20 And five songs on the Global 200, excluding US chart,
08:27 including "Not Shy," which reached No. 70 in September 2020.
08:31 It's clear that ITZY knows how to make a Billboard chart hit.
08:38 And we can't wait to see where "Born To Be" takes them next.
08:41 That's it for the news.
08:44 Come back next week for our interviews with Billboard.
08:47 Come back next week for our interviews with Don Omar and Julia Michaels.
08:51 But before you go, there's one more entry in our Friday Music Guide.

08:58 and she's sharing a beautiful tribute to her baby with "Son Son."
