Lots of people may associate camping with the summer or fall, but it's becoming a lot more popular to go camping in the winter too.

00:00 And speaking of cold, it's a long holiday weekend.
00:02 Did you make plans to travel and do winter camping?
00:06 With a blizzard unfolding, it might be a challenge
00:08 in the Midwest and there's severe weather through the South.
00:10 So you have to really keep in mind what kind of weather
00:13 you're going to be going through.
00:14 And safety is key.
00:15 To discuss winter camping,
00:16 we have Kevin Long from The Dirt.
00:18 And Kevin, most people probably think camping,
00:23 it's a summertime thing.
00:25 Should they give winter camping a try?
00:28 Well, Melissa, when you go camping,
00:30 you want that peace and quiet, that great outdoors.
00:33 Winter camping equals less people, equals more peace.
00:37 It's an incredible time to get out there and go camping.
00:41 I like the sound of that.
00:42 And we also are, of course,
00:44 talking about many different weather conditions
00:46 across the country.
00:48 And so what do you have to prepare for
00:50 when we're talking about winter camping in particular?
00:53 Well, winter camping, you know,
00:55 what's interesting with it is, is with The Dirt,
00:57 we do an annual camping report and we discovered
01:00 that winter camping is getting more and more popular.
01:03 But even with that popularity, it's easy to grab a spot.
01:06 Now, when you're going out there,
01:07 you got to think about what do you have to watch out about?
01:11 One thing that I've recently discovered is last year,
01:13 Melissa, did you know that the AccuWeather premium app
01:16 has a super good winter camping feature?
01:19 - I've heard about it.
01:21 (laughing)
01:22 - And so here's specifically what it is.
01:24 What I do is I go into the app
01:26 and what's awesome about this app is you can go
01:28 to the hourly feature and in the hourly feature,
01:32 you can look at snow, ice, and rain.
01:35 So when you're winter camping,
01:36 it's really important to know when can I drive?
01:39 Or let's say it's a Saturday, when should I go hiking?
01:42 Should I go hiking in the morning?
01:43 Should I go hiking in the evening?
01:44 It's really nice to be able to look
01:46 at the AccuWeather premium app
01:48 and look at hourly, snow, ice, rain,
01:52 which time is the best time to get out there.
01:55 - That's some great advice, Kevin Long from The Dirt.
01:57 And Kevin actually doesn't know this,
01:59 but the only closest I've come to winter camping
02:01 is May on the North Shore of Minnesota,
02:04 which I believe is his home state.
