00:03 - A couple of things I want to clear up here.
00:04 First of all, yes, it is true that they had agreement.
00:08 It was done months ago, as I understand it,
00:11 that he would succeed Bill.
00:14 He would take over when Bill was done.
00:15 But just to be clear here,
00:17 they were not going into the season,
00:19 Robert Kraft in particular,
00:21 thinking that he was going to fire Bill Belichick.
00:23 In fact, Kraft was involved in getting Belichick
00:26 to hire Bill O'Brien as an offense coordinator.
00:29 What Kraft wanted is he wanted a new OC.
00:32 It didn't work with Matt Patricia.
00:33 He's very public about it.
00:34 As I understand it behind the scenes,
00:36 that they met after last season and this had to happen.
00:40 They had to get a real coordinator
00:41 and Bill O'Brien came back and it didn't work.
00:43 And one of the big reasons for all that,
00:46 Belichick is no longer their head coach,
00:47 is his inability to develop that quarterback position.
00:50 This is as crazy as best coach in NFL history,
00:53 as far as I'm concerned.
00:53 I've been a big supporter of his,
00:55 but that egregious decision to have Matt Patricia
00:57 be the play caller in '22,
00:59 that set back Matt Jones, he's never recovered.
01:02 They still have not figured out
01:03 who the starting quarterback will be in the future.
01:06 After Tom Brady was gone, they tried Cam Noon,
01:08 that was a disaster.
01:09 Bailey Zappi didn't do well.
01:11 Matt Jones has not done well.
01:12 And unfortunately that is the way it ended there,
01:14 but still an awesome career.
01:16 We all know that.
01:18 I'm glad that it was just called a draft Tom Brady in 1999,
01:21 but he'll move on and Jrod Mayo comes in there
01:23 at 37 years old.
01:25 Now, one thing I could add to this is that
01:28 some of the information I've gathered,
01:29 really going back to last spring is,
01:31 he had opportunities to go elsewhere
01:33 as a defense coordinator,
01:34 and he could have interviewed to be head coach.
01:36 He took his name out of those availabilities to do that,
01:41 because he knew he was coming back
01:43 to potentially be their head coach.
01:44 This is what he wanted.
01:46 Belichick drafted in the first round in 2008,
01:48 beloved by the players.
01:50 They love him.
01:51 Great teacher, connects well.
01:52 He's a young guy.
01:53 See, this is the difference.
01:54 You look at Belichick when he came in many years ago
01:58 in his late 50s or mid 50s.
02:00 And then you look at this situation
02:03 with Mayo is still in his 30s.
02:05 So this is a kind of interesting situation with Bob Kraft
02:08 and he's willing to be patient here as I understand it.
02:11 And I give Bob Kraft credit.
02:13 And the only thing that surprised me about this,
02:15 now, of course he didn't know when he was talking
02:16 to Mayo's agent Mayo last year,
02:19 he didn't know that Mike Rabel was gonna get fired.
02:21 'Cause a lot of us thought that Rabel would be that guy
02:24 and he would be the only other choice.
02:26 But Bob Kraft identified him, a guy that they respect.
02:30 They like a lot.
02:31 And by the way, he also got a bump in pay
02:33 to be their co-coordinator.
02:35 He was called the linebackers coach.
02:36 We shared the defensive coordinator responsibilities
02:38 with Steve Belichick, Bill's son.
02:40 And obviously things are gonna change.
02:41 But the big charge for him going forward is,
02:43 as we move forward here, is to figure out
02:46 how they're gonna get a quarterback
02:48 who could start for the longterm.
02:49 And Gerard's gotta have a plan.
02:50 I'm interested to see who he has as his offense coordinator.
02:53 Oh, by the way, they need a general manager.
02:55 They don't have one right now.
