00:25 >> [FOREIGN]
00:30 >> Hello, Paul.
00:30 First of all, Happy New Year.
00:32 >> Happy New Year to you too.
00:33 First show of the year.
00:35 >> Exciting news.
00:36 Are you interested for our first episode of 2024?
00:39 >> Look, there's no way I'd rather start the new year than with an episode of
00:42 Game Changers with you.
00:43 >> Then let's get started.
00:44 [MUSIC]
00:47 >> [FOREIGN]
00:57 >> So we talked in the previous episodes of Game Changers in 2023 about Netflix
01:08 entering the gaming industry.
01:10 Of course, we all know that Netflix is successful in terms of the entertainment
01:14 industry, but now entering the gaming industry,
01:18 do you think it's going to be successful?
01:19 Especially we're talking about 90 games in development.
01:23 >> Yeah, it's a little bit of a slow burn with Netflix, right?
01:25 This hasn't been big and splashy and
01:29 they've launched something mega and spent zillions of dollars.
01:32 >> Because I believe their main focus nowadays is not on gaming.
01:36 They're trying to be developed.
01:39 They're trying to enter the gaming industry, but they're not strong as
01:43 when I compare them to the entertainment industry,
01:45 how they're really successful in terms of movies and series and so on.
01:49 >> Of course, but in some ways it makes sense why they wouldn't be going all in
01:53 on gaming, because fundamentally, gaming is the biggest threat to their business.
01:58 There's a finite amount of attention that a person has and
02:01 they choose to spend it on the leisure activities that they like.
02:04 Today, they'll spend an hour watching Netflix and
02:07 they may spend an hour playing World of Warcraft.
02:09 But if gaming, which it already is and has,
02:13 becomes the dominant form of entertainment,
02:15 the hours spending Netflix will become hours gaming.
02:18 So in some ways,
02:19 them pushing gaming is them pushing the demise of their existing business, right?
02:24 At some point, their existing business gets replaced by gaming.
02:27 >> And based on your experience,
02:29 do you think they're gonna succeed in the gaming industry?
02:31 >> They have to, right?
02:32 They have to.
02:33 The world is gonna go towards interactive entertainment more.
02:36 So if they wanna save Netflix as a business,
02:38 the same way people went to Blockbuster to get movies before, and
02:41 Netflix launched CDs or DVDs to your door, they were willing
02:45 to consume their own business, to cannibalize their own business, and bet on the future.
02:50 And I think they're doing something similar with gaming.
02:52 It's a slow measured approach.
02:54 They had 40 games out in 2023.
02:56 They have 90 new games in development in 2024 now.
03:00 I think we will see a measured approach to gaming,
03:02 because until gaming is the biggest threat, they won't go all in.
03:07 And now let's go to Riot Games.
03:08 [MUSIC]
03:11 [FOREIGN]
03:21 So according to that news, Riot Games officially announced
03:27 their Prime Gaming promotions will end in March 2024.
03:31 What are your thoughts?
03:32 >> Yeah, this is a weird one, because it seemed like a win-win for both sides.
03:36 But just for clarity's sake, the partnership, what it meant and
03:39 what it did was, if you were an Amazon Prime member, you could go and
03:44 get free League of Legends skins, and free Valorant skins, and
03:48 free in-game items, basically being a Prime member.
03:52 And League of Legends, and Valorant, and
03:54 Riot would create these skins specifically for Amazon Prime members.
03:58 So they were unique to the Amazon Prime promotions.
04:02 This is a win-win in my mind for everybody, right?
04:04 The player gets more value out of their Amazon Prime membership, and
04:09 it's value for gamers who play League of Legends, and Valorant, and
04:12 all the Riot Games.
04:14 I don't know why this would come to an end.
04:15 I suspect, as with all partnerships that come to an end very suddenly like this,
04:20 it's a question of money, it's a question of dollars.
04:23 And maybe Amazon Prime and Amazon Parent didn't see the value in continuing to pay
04:28 for free skins for players, that maybe they figured people would keep their
04:32 Amazon Prime memberships anyways.
04:35 So I suspect it's a question of money, but
04:37 it's sad to see because I think the players lose in all of this.
04:40 >> And now let's see another story.
04:42 [FOREIGN]
05:00 >> So according to that news, Grand Theft Auto VI broke records on YouTube,
05:05 achieving nearly 97 million views in over nine hours.
05:09 That's crazy.
05:10 >> It is crazy.
05:11 And I mean, if this doesn't convince you about the dominance of gaming, look,
05:15 now the record for the YouTube video with the most views in a 24 hour period.
05:21 >> We're talking about less than 24 hours.
05:25 >> This beat the Mr. Beast videos, which generate crazy amounts of views.
05:29 So there's obviously a lot of excitement around GTA VI.
05:33 No question that people are going to continue to be excited,
05:37 continue to look forward to this game.
05:39 For sure, it will sell hundreds of millions of copies when it comes out.
05:43 But that's the crux of it.
05:44 You know this game isn't even coming out till 2025, and
05:48 may not come out on PC till 2026, and that's assuming it's on time.
05:52 >> Gamers are excited.
05:54 >> It feels still a long way away, and
05:57 they're gonna spend billions of dollars to make this game.
06:00 So this is a huge risk, despite all the excitement and all the hype.
06:04 It's still a very big risk, and it's a big, big endeavor, and
06:08 it's still far away.
06:09 It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
06:11 >> But now, for the time being,
06:13 let's continue our chat with our guest for today.
06:15 >> Let's do it.
06:16 [MUSIC]
06:24 >> [FOREIGN]
06:31 >> Hello, Rami, and welcome to Game Changers.
06:33 >> Hello, thank you for having me.
06:35 >> So first of all, what makes a great eSports event or festival?
06:41 >> Well, in general, you wanna look at four pillars for that.
06:45 You want, from a gaming perspective, a competitive integrity.
06:51 You want good production quality for good experience,
06:55 good fan engagement, so it's lively for everybody.
06:59 And good sponsor integration as well, so
07:03 it's meaningful for the partners for the event.
07:07 However, if you wanna go a little bit outside of that,
07:11 you wanna also understand your audience that you wanna be targeting.
07:16 So you can provide activities and
07:21 activations that they would be interested to come and attend and experience.
07:26 Yeah.
07:27 >> Rami, let's talk about Dubai.
07:28 We saw Dubai recently announce that they're gonna have their own gaming
07:31 strategy, their own gaming vision.
07:34 I'm curious, what do you think Dubai should focus on?
07:37 And I'd love to understand your view on that,
07:40 especially in the context of competition that we see today from Abu Dhabi,
07:44 from Saudi Arabia, who all have their own gaming strategies or visions.
07:49 >> Well, see, initially I was very pleased to see Dubai doing such
07:52 an announcement because it is much needed.
07:54 It's everybody, every government entity, and
07:58 investing into this ecosystem helps everybody around it as well.
08:02 So Dubai has been engaged in some activities and
08:07 events that they've been doing.
08:08 And to see this announcement, well, I feel they're on the right step.
08:13 Now, what I'd like to see is more, let's say,
08:18 talent from the city, more producers or
08:23 developers, and kind of going down the game development aspect as well,
08:28 not just eSports.
08:30 And I think that's what would achieve the dream that they want,
08:34 which is the target, let's say, that they want of creating 30,000 jobs, was it?
08:40 So it's more or less, this is something that you also see Abu Dhabi doing,
08:48 you also see Saudi Arabia doing.
08:50 It's not that, I don't think you need to look at what else can you do.
08:56 I think everybody doing a lot more of those kind of activations or,
09:01 let's say, developments will help everybody else.
09:04 >> Now, let's drill down in your area of expertise,
09:06 especially around eSports events.
09:08 How important do you think are eSports events in the building of an ecosystem?
09:12 Are they revenue drivers?
09:14 Are they loss leaders?
09:16 What role do they play in the building of an ecosystem?
09:19 >> Interesting you say revenue driver or loss leaders, because they can be both.
09:24 >> Okay.
09:24 >> Right?
09:25 Ultimately, the importance of it is that it brings the community together, right?
09:31 So that's why it does help the ecosystem overall,
09:34 because everybody's coming in to engage in one place.
09:38 Now, it's very important to have revenue from ticket sales or sponsorships,
09:44 but I feel that ultimately the long-term outcome is building on the community.
09:52 And that's the real value of these events in my perspective.
09:58 >> So, Rami, do you think eSports events will ever be a major driver of tourism in the region?
10:04 >> Absolutely.
10:05 >> Why?
10:07 >> Well, if you look at events, let's say the international or
10:11 worlds and how the ticket sales happen from around the world.
10:16 And once we reach such events that would have that kind of anticipation and
10:24 people wanting to purchase tickets and it sells out in minutes as soon as it's launched.
10:29 >> This is also including GCC as well?
10:33 >> Yeah, yeah, ultimately.
10:34 I mean, whether you want to bring in such an IP and host it here or
10:38 build your own IP to become something big, both options are available.
10:44 So when you have that kind of attention from around the world,
10:50 that's how you help build the economy of the city.
10:54 >> That's what happened with Gamers 8 in Saudi Arabia as well.
10:56 >> Yeah, absolutely.
10:58 >> Rami, I really enjoyed this interview.
11:00 Thank you so much for your input.
11:02 >> Thank you very much. Thank you for having me.
11:03 [MUSIC]
11:12 >> [FOREIGN]
11:22 >> So what are you looking forward to the most in the gaming industry in 2024?
11:27 Is it new consoles, new games, or new VR headsets, or new eSports competitions?
11:33 >> I can tell you there was one thing missing from this poll,
11:36 which I think would have got 100% of the vote,
11:38 which is more episodes of Game Changers.
11:41 I think that's what I'm looking forward to the most.
11:43 >> Yeah.
11:43 >> But most games, more games, it's not surprising at all.
11:47 At the end of the day, games sell the hardware, right?
11:50 People don't buy a console for the console.
11:53 People buy a console or the VR headset because they want to play a certain game.
11:57 The content in gaming is king as it is in every other industry.
12:01 So at the end of the day,
12:03 people want new games, new experiences.
12:05 It doesn't matter what hardware it runs on.
12:07 They want to play the game.
12:08 They want to have that experience.
12:09 They want to live that story,
12:11 whatever it is, the hardware doesn't matter.
12:13 So I'm surprised that's not even a bigger number to be honest,
12:16 but I'm not surprised that most people want more games this year.
12:19 >> Paul, I really enjoyed this episode and I'm so excited to
12:22 see what 2024 is going to bring to the gaming industry.
12:26 No question that 2024 is going to be a huge year for gaming.
12:29 So happy new year to my amazing co-host.
12:32 >> Happy new year.
12:32 >> To our amazing viewers every single week.
