00:00 Catching a baseball with your cheeks, breaking through a wall to stop a play, jumping above a fence to save the game, and so much more.
00:07 These are the 20 craziest catches in MLB history.
00:10 And first, Nick Martinez made a catch that should be impossible.
00:15 He caught that from behind his back.
00:24 But number 19 is just as extreme, 'cause Zach McAllister caught the ball after getting pegged.
00:30 Oh, it nailed McAllister, and he caught it! Are you kidding me? Wow! That was unbelievable!
00:38 Man, look like a ballerina out there.
00:39 But number 18 was even more beautiful, 'cause this fan took off her prosthetic leg to try and catch a baseball in it.
00:46 But some catches are life-threatening.
00:53 'Cause in number 17, two players went for the same ball, and it went horribly wrong.
00:58 Who wants it? Colliding, Piscati and Borges, the catch is made, and Piscati is down.
01:05 Oh my goodness.
01:09 Now luckily, he ended up walking out the hospital with just a bruise.
01:12 But sometimes catches save lives, like in number 16.
01:16 Here's a Danny Echeverria, and Bruce is controlled.
01:19 Oh, that's a great catch! That's a great catch!
01:23 Huh, he looks like he's done that before, but uh, no one has done number 15 before.
01:28 'Cause this fan saw a foul ball coming right at him, so he held up his helmet full of nachos and said a prayer.
01:34 Outstanding guy with the helmet catches the baseball. He's super jazzed.
01:39 He broke his helmet. What he's unaware of, there's certainly not anymore. He still has nacho cheese.
01:45 Disgusting.
01:46 But number 14 was almost disgusting, 'cause Pablo Sandoval was about to fumble a catch.
01:52 But his teammate came through and saved it.
01:54 And Sandoval flips it in the air, and Crawford put it!
01:59 Oh my!
02:00 And for number 13, Manny Machado once caught a ball, with his face.
02:04 Foul ground, long run for Machado, trying the over the shoulder, and he catches it!
02:12 Ooh, you know that had to hurt.
02:13 David Wright was feeling the pain too, 'cause in number 12, he was chasing a ball on the outfield.
02:19 But instead of using his glove, he did this.
02:21 Broken bat, and...
02:23 Oh, David Wright! What a play!
02:27 Are you kidding? That may be the best I've ever seen.
02:31 He raw-dogged that ball.
02:33 But uh, speaking of raw-dogging, there's some places you should never catch.
02:38 And in number 11, the player learned that the hard way, when a ball assaulted his cheeks.
02:45 Lined foul down towards the cup's pen. Nice stop.
02:50 Was he proud of that? Man, I don't know.
02:52 But look, we've reached the top 10, which means we're taking crazy to a whole 'nother level.
02:57 And we gotta talk about Rodney McCray, 'cause he made a catch so crazy, it destroyed the stadium.
03:04 It's a catch! It's a shot to deep right center! It's going, going...
03:09 Oh my! That's unbelievable!
03:14 I don't even know how he's walking after that, let alone holding the damn ball.
03:18 But number 9 doesn't make any sense, 'cause a fan made one of the most impossible catches in MLB history.
03:25 And having a fan, she caught that last foul ball with her beer.
03:34 Yeah! No bad hops there.
03:38 Ugh, she's kinda nasty for that.
03:43 But this next catch is just criminal, 'cause at number 8,
03:46 Ender Inciarte made a catch so crazy, it stole the game.
03:50 See, during a game against the Mets, the Braves were up 4-3 in the final inning,
03:54 with two men on base and Yoannis Saspitis up to bat.
03:57 He had a chance to win the game, so he hit the ball, and it looked like a guaranteed home run.
04:02 But out of nowhere, Inciarte did the impossible.
04:05 (Casting)
04:16 Damn, that man got up.
04:18 But at number 7, Steven Souza Jr. got down, 'cause he dove and made a catch that made history.
04:24 Yeah, Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmerman was one play away from sealing a no-hitter,
04:29 meaning nobody had gotten a hit off of him for the entire game.
04:32 When, in the final play, a Marlins player hit the ball all the way down left field.
04:37 But luckily, Souza Jr. made a catch so crazy, it put his teammate in the history books.
04:43 (Casting)
05:00 Whew, what a way to save the game.
05:02 But look, we gotta talk about Gary Matthews, 'cause he had one of the most ridiculous catches I've ever seen.
05:08 (Casting)
05:24 Alright, dawg, we've hit the top 5, and we gotta mention the kid, Ken Griffey Jr.,
05:29 'cause during a game against the Tigers, he made the craziest catch of his career.
05:34 (Casting)
05:54 My man went from junior to a senior on that one.
05:57 But Ichiro was on something else in number 4, 'cause he once caught a ball by climbing on a wall.
06:02 See, during a game between the Angels and Mariners, Garrett Anderson was up to bat,
06:06 and he ended up knocking the ball way out toward the fence, thinking he had just got himself a home run.
06:11 But somehow, Ichiro jumped on the wall and robbed him.
06:15 (Casting)
06:25 That is legendary.
06:27 But this next play made history, 'cause Dwayne Wise made a catch that saved a perfect game.
06:33 It was the White Sox vs. the Rays, and Chicago pitcher Mark Burley was one inning away from securing a perfect game.
06:41 When Gabe Kapler hit a ball deep into center field, with no White Sox players in sight, Wise came out of nowhere and did this.
06:48 (Casting)
07:04 Yeah, Mark threw a perfect game, meaning not a single player made it onto base.
07:09 Damn, that last play was a close call though.
07:11 But this next catch was just dangerous, 'cause Derek Jeter made a catch that almost killed him.
07:17 In 2004, the Yankees and Red Sox were facing off in New York, two teams with one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports.
07:24 And the game was living up to the hype, 'cause the two teams were all tied up in the 12th inning,
07:29 when Red Sox hitter Trot Nixon sent a ball towards left field, and it was looking like he might seal the game.
07:35 But Jeter put his body on the line and made the catch of a lifetime.
07:39 (Casting)
07:49 Oh, that was crazy.
07:50 But after the game, instead of celebrating the win with his team, Jeter went to the hospital to make sure that he was okay.
07:56 Luckily though, he was totally fine.
07:58 And if you're thinking, "Why didn't Jeter just stop?"
08:00 Well...
08:01 He could've just stopped. No, I couldn't have just stopped.
08:04 You know, if you go back to the whole Yankee stand, there's not a lot of room.
08:07 So if I could've stopped, I would've stopped.
08:09 And it's sloping.
08:10 Yeah, no, I, I, I...
08:11 If I could've, I would've stopped.
08:13 Uh, so actually, the...
08:14 Why you looking at the camera, man?
08:15 I'm making sure they see it.
08:17 If I could've stopped, I would've stopped.
08:19 Damn, that man risked it all.
08:21 But alright, it's time to talk about the craziest catch in MLB history.
08:26 It was Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, Giants vs. Indians.
08:32 And during the 8th inning, the score was all tied up, and the Indians had runners on base,
08:37 when Vic Word sent a deep fly ball to center field.
08:41 And it was looking like the Indians were gonna steal this game.
08:44 Somehow, though, Willie Mays not only caught the ball and got the out,
08:47 but he also stopped the runners from scoring.
08:50 There's a long drive, way back in center field, way back, back in it.
08:56 What a catch!
08:59 That's a catch which must have been an optical illusion to a lot of people.
09:04 The craziest part was, in any other stadium, this would've been an automatic home run.
09:09 But they happened to be playing in a one-of-a-kind stadium,
09:12 where center field was almost 80 feet longer than a regular field.
09:15 And while Mays and the Giants went on to win the World Series,
09:18 the play itself became more iconic than the championship.
09:21 I mean, it has its own Wikipedia page.
09:23 And scientists have even run tests on the play,
09:25 where they concluded that if it had been just one degree warmer outside,
09:29 the ball would've traveled two more inches, and Mays would've missed it.
09:33 So the play that legendary had simply become known as "The Catch".
09:38 But as unlikely as that moment was, we've seen even rarer moments in the MLB.
09:43 A player literally hitting the cover off a ball,
09:45 a game getting delayed because a swarm of bees,
09:48 and a player actually stealing first base in a fit of rage.
09:51 And that's only three of the 41-in-a-million moments I covered.
