00:00 All right, I want you to pay close attention to my commands, protect yourself at all times, touch them up, wait for the bell.
00:05 The three-time Brazilian Olympian De Jesus.
00:11 And Puerto Rico's Jacob Gomez.
00:16 Former member of the Puerto Rican national team.
00:20 Time.
00:21 Here we go! It's time to fight.
00:26 Black and red trunks for the southpaw Jacob Gomez.
00:30 De Jesus in the black and yellow trunks.
00:35 From Bahia, Brazil. Big age difference.
00:40 A ton of amateur experience.
00:43 Three-time Olympian from Brazil in 36-year-old De Jesus.
00:49 We've seen Gomez in the past. He's got a nice little boxing style.
00:55 De Jesus is a little older, but of course he's going to have that confidence.
00:57 You've been to the Olympic Games three times. You're going to have that confidence.
01:00 Gomez has that youthful energy, and here we see it.
01:03 Going body head early.
01:08 And let me tell you something. If you make the Puerto Rican national team as an amateur,
01:12 you are a pretty good amateur too.
01:13 And the quality of competition in the amateurs that De Jesus has faced is as good as any.
01:23 Especially being an Olympian on three occasions.
01:26 Yeah champ, you mentioned the confidence from the veteran experience.
01:30 De Jesus, we saw that under that combination from Gomez.
01:35 He just stayed tight.
01:36 He's catching the shots on the gloves.
01:39 Biding his time.
01:41 And Chris, as I mentioned, Jacob has been out of the ring for 10 months,
01:47 but yet has been in the ring, he said, 24/7.
01:51 Really breaking down his game and putting it back together.
01:54 And working on being more patient, and especially something to watch for his positioning.
02:00 Working on better positioning with Marc Ferrer.
02:03 His head movement looks pretty good so far tonight.
02:06 Getting under shots, just slipping just outside of shots.
02:08 Very, very subtle defensive moves from Gomez.
02:10 He's managed to avoid some of the big counters up from De Jesus.
02:17 De Jesus is probably going to have to shorten some of those up.
02:19 He's seeing them, but he's still a little wide.
02:21 And Gomez is punching a little shorter and a little crisper.
02:23 Oh, caught him with that right hand.
02:27 Good check hook there from the southpaw position of Gomez.
02:29 Fourth professional fight against a fellow unbeaten for Jovenelson De Jesus.
02:40 As you know, Chris, I learned day one from Elaine McCarthy.
02:47 Where is H in Portuguese?
02:49 Nice counter combination there by Gomez.
02:51 Again, he's staying-- again, we talked about that position.
02:54 He's staying very well in good position when he slips some of the wider shots of De Jesus.
02:59 De Jesus can be surprising with these long arms,
03:01 but he's a little bit wide and Gomez punching inside and now taking advantage.
03:05 Yeah, I like the balance of Gomez.
03:07 Fine, keeping his feet in good position.
03:09 For offense and defense.
03:15 Good start for the 21-year-old Jacob Gomez.
03:19 Give me some!
03:20 Give me some!
03:21 Right shot!
03:21 Right shot!
03:22 [BELL RINGING]
03:24 [APPLAUSE]
03:26 [CHATTER]
03:28 [CHEERING]
03:52 [CHATTER]
03:54 That combination again.
04:06 You saw the attempt of the counter by De Jesus missed.
04:10 And Gomez keeps that position on that-- on that count-- on that slip.
04:13 And then he's able to come back with that combination right there,
04:16 which pretty much doesn't stop to the end of the replay
04:19 because he's able to keep that balance when he makes that slip.
04:22 I like how Gomez focused on the body there.
04:25 He had his man showed up in front of him.
04:26 He was going around the elbows looking for those body shots.
04:28 And also when guys show up like that, when you put hands on them,
04:32 they'll keep those hands home.
04:33 And then a lot of times they won't punch back.
04:35 Gomez's southpaw, black with red trunks, black and yellow trunks for De Jesus.
04:41 He has been here in the United States for the last three months
04:45 training in Newark, New Jersey with Adriano Silva
04:50 in preparation for tonight's fight.
04:53 Momentary lapse in judgment there from-- from Gomez.
05:00 He just started looking outside the ring a couple of times, I'm sure.
05:03 What he was looking at, but--
05:06 De Jesus has these long arms that sometimes connect.
05:10 You see some reddening around the right eye of Gomez from that left hook.
05:14 Adriano Silva did say watch for De Jesus to be aggressive,
05:19 to be technical, and keep an eye on the footwork
05:22 as he follows up with the combination there.
05:24 Yeah, De Jesus has a pretty tricky left hook.
05:26 He throws it from the outside and the inside there,
05:28 landing some-- some nice shots over the top.
05:30 Good body shot there from Gomez.
05:32 Left hand to the body.
05:33 That's the liver side when you're southpaw.
05:35 So you can go ahead with De Jesus just a little wide when he comes back with those shots.
05:39 He allows Gomez to see them.
05:41 And Gomez is able to keep a better position.
05:43 You know, I always say, Jim, long arms are good on the outside,
05:45 but they're detrimental on the inside.
05:47 Yeah, yeah, and you can see it there.
05:49 Ooh, good left hand right down the middle splits the guard of De Jesus.
05:54 Also, Gomez's offense is just a little bit crisper.
05:56 De Jesus makes his awkwardness work for him at times,
05:58 but Gomez is just a little crisper, and even with the better legs and the balance.
06:02 That could also be with the age-- due to the age of De Jesus.
06:05 He's, you know, he's 36.
06:06 Sometimes your legs aren't as stable as you're a little older,
06:09 especially when you got three Olympic-- three Olympic appearances.
06:12 That's probably a ton of amateur experience.
06:13 That's a mile.
06:13 Two fights.
06:14 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London, 2016 in his home country of Brazil.
06:21 His last amateur fight was in the round of 16 that year.
06:26 He lost to the eventual silver medalist Shakur Stevenson.
06:31 Oh, wow.
06:31 And like you said, Goldie, I mean, he hasn't had it easy as a pro either
06:35 in terms of competition.
06:36 No.
06:41 Instead of "I'm gonna come and do this, I'm gonna keep it on a very high level."
06:45 I mean, you got no choice.
06:48 You're 36, and you don't-- you gotta move fast.
06:51 Well, Basie Ramirez won the gold medal in 2016, defeating Shakur Stevenson.
07:01 Nice left hand again down the middle from Gomez.
07:03 Again, those crisper shots from Gomez.
07:05 I like that left hand when he splits the guard that way, Gomez.
07:11 He's got a lot of power in his left hand.
07:12 Seems like Gomez is also seeing more of De Jesus' offense
07:22 as De Jesus comes in wide, and when he does a tank stick.

08:24 Our first fight on a Wednesday night here on Pro Box TV, round number three.
08:29 Jacob Gomez, black with red trunks,
08:35 Jovenilson De Jesus, his twin brother Jovenito.
08:40 Mom gave them both the nicknames Dada and Dai, or Dadai and Dai.
08:48 It is Jovenilson who is in the ring tonight against young Jacob Gomez.
08:54 The problem that De Jesus also has is the fact that he thinks he's fighting with the computer scoring system,
08:59 where he thinks he just puts his hands up, but it doesn't allow him to get off punches at times.
09:03 He just kind of handcuffs himself, and Gomez does split the guard, and Gomez does go to the body well.
09:08 Things that in the pros will help you.
09:10 Not to mention the computer system is gone now in the amateurs, but that's one of the reasons why.
09:14 And computer system or not, he's losing this fight.
09:17 Because in the computer system, you've got to land punches, and Gomez is outlanding him as well.
09:21 So many years, 19 different countries he competed in during his amateur days.
09:30 De Jesus, how do you get out of that mode, though, Chris?
09:34 I mean, all but one of his fights professionally has gone the distance.
09:38 How do you get out of the amateur and go to the pro mode?
09:41 I mean, power is one of those things, either you have it or you don't.
09:44 It doesn't seem like he's a very powerful guy in general, but you've got to be able to adapt into the pro style.
09:49 You mentioned Robicio Ramirez earlier.
09:51 He's someone who's done it exceptionally well, taking that high-level amateur experience, bringing it to the pro game.
09:56 He's starting to knock everybody up now.
09:58 As he progresses as a pro, he's learning how to really punch.
10:02 One of the things you also got to do, just boxing in general, you got to learn how to punch in between guys.
10:05 With the computer system, a lot of times guys would just catch that you wouldn't score on them,
10:09 but they would try to score the points on you.
10:11 Punching in between is when you get the most better openings anyway.
10:13 You also disrupt rhythm.
10:15 He doesn't punch a lot in between except for kind of a sweeping left hook every once in a while, like right there.
10:19 And also, champ, when you punch in between, you get a better chance of hurting guys,
10:22 because they're thinking about hitting you, and then you crack them, and you hit them with that punch they don't see.
10:26 And it's also psychological, because that creates doubt, that creates good shots here from Gomez again.
10:30 That was actually a good counter.
10:32 De Jesus, but he just got one.
10:34 He did sneak one in early, Chris, but Gomez delivering punch after punch since that.
10:40 You know, Goldy, it's the power differential.
10:42 We're talking about amateurs and pro styles, and Gomez is a much more pro style.
10:46 Six fights in 2022. This is first fight of 2023.
10:53 And you know what really started that off was a body shot.
10:57 Gomez came right back, and that's another pro aspect that Gomez brings that De Jesus does not.
11:03 Gomez ain't kidding. He really has been in the gym for nine months.
11:05 I mean, he was already a good fighter when I saw him last, but he's added some wrinkles here.
11:09 And this is not an easy opponent. He's dealing with them really well.
11:12 Boy's in shape. No question about it.
11:17 And humble and willing to break it down back to the basics,
11:24 and you can see the improvements on display right here, right now on Wednesday night on ProBox TV.
11:30 And right there, Dan, that subtle slip, that's exactly what I was talking about in round number one from Gomez.
11:35 He's got very subtle defense, makes the punch just miss.
11:38 I love seeing that because it shows confidence in your defense.
11:41 Father Joey Gomez.
11:58 Vamos.
11:59 Jacob and Joey always say it's not father and son when we're in this environment.
12:09 It's fighter and trainer.
12:12 Jacob said he never really looks much at his opponents.
12:16 His father game plans, and he listens to his corner.
12:20 He says, "All I need to prepare are my ears."
12:25 This six-round matchup continues.
12:28 Jacob Gomez.
12:33 This Southpaw, 7-0-1, five finishes.
12:37 In the black with red trunks.
12:39 Round four, this one's scheduled for six.
12:42 Black and yellow trunks for DeJesus.
12:46 DeJesus landed a nice, short, crisp right hand down the center a few moments ago.
12:55 Trying to change things up a little bit at the start of this round.
12:59 He's going to need to. He got rocked in the last round.
13:03 Certainly down on my scorecard.
13:05 Gomez, patient yet still aggressive.
13:14 Trying to walk down DeJesus, using the feints.
13:21 Different techniques here.
13:24 Trying to disguise his offense, giving different looks.
13:28 You see DeJesus trying there to get Gomez off him.
13:31 No matter how hard DeJesus tries, you see Gomez with a consistent pressure.
13:34 The pressure becomes mental as well, because you can't get this guy to stop coming forward on you.
13:38 Also, I like about Gomez, he doesn't care if they have their hands up.
13:41 He's looking to punch right through the guard.
13:44 Certainly a big age difference, 36-year-old against 21-year-old.
13:49 That said, facing off against a three-time Olympian,
13:52 this is the biggest test on paper of Jacob Gomez's young professional career.
13:59 Gomez pressuring, stalking, staying very, very calm, very methodical.
14:04 You see how he touches when the guard is high, when he traps DeJesus on the ropes.
14:09 He touches, he does different things, and then changes the speed on the punches,
14:13 changes how hard he's going to throw certain punches.
14:15 He's trying to open up that guard as well.
14:17 He's thinking in there when he traps him.
14:19 We've been talking about the amateur experience of DeJesus,
14:21 but Gomez was a very good amateur as well.
14:23 You can always tell the amateur guys, they've got a different eye for the action.
14:27 They're able to see things.
14:29 Just like you said, champ, he's picking his spots, picking his punches,
14:32 because he's got those eyes open for every little opening.
14:35 About 50 seconds left in round number four.
14:39 Quick hook landing for DeJesus.
14:41 That's the one punch in between that he uses, that little check left hook.
14:44 He's landed it a couple times, Paul.
14:46 He's landed it twice so far.
14:48 And also, credit Mark for it too.
14:50 He's been working with Gomez the entire time as well.
14:52 Clearly, they've been doing a lot of good work.
14:54 I know Gomez also works with his father a lot.
14:56 So it's been a good combination and good tandem there.
14:59 In the fighter meeting yesterday, Jacob did talk a lot about his work with Coach Mark.
15:04 He said he's fixed a lot of little things.
15:07 I need to continue to get better.
15:09 Positioning is something--
15:11 Oh, and he's talking about right there with that quick hook again.
