00:00 A rare bill with bipartisan support and South Korea's parliament voted nearly unanimously
00:05 to put an end to the slaughter and consumption of dogs.
00:08 With 208 votes in favour and two votes abstention, I announced a ban on slaughtering, breeding
00:15 and sales of dog meat for human consumption has been passed.
00:20 Outside the parliament, animal rights activists rejoiced and proclaimed victory after a long
00:25 fight.
00:26 "We, the HSI, have been fighting since 2015 to end dog meat consumption, and I am touched
00:36 by this moment.
00:39 I am happy the bill has finally been passed.
00:42 We will work with the government and put our efforts into finding homes and families for
00:47 the dogs."
00:51 Though considered taboo in some countries, there's a long tradition of eating dogs in
00:55 Korea and other parts of East Asia, but only one in ten South Koreans now consume dog meat.
01:01 According to official figures, there are 1,100 dog farms in the country.
01:05 Dog farmers have resolutely opposed the ban and took aim at President Yoon Suk-yool, a
01:10 noted dog lover.
01:12 "Neither the president nor his wife, nor the minister of agriculture or members of
01:19 parliament or politicians have the power to deprive people of their right to food.
01:28 Depriving citizens of their right to food is an atrocity and an act of violence."
01:36 The new law provides compensation for businesses to phase out dog farming.
01:41 South Korea joins other territories in the region such as Hong Kong and Taiwan in banning
01:45 the consumption of canine meat.
01:47 The legal status of eating dog meat worldwide varies according to country.
01:51 Even in European countries such as Germany, Switzerland and the UK, where the sale of
01:56 dog meat is banned, it remains legal to consume.
