00:00 "And that kids is the true story of how I met your mother."
00:03 "What?"
00:04 "I'm kidding."
00:05 Welcome to Ms. Mojo and today we're counting down our picks for the biggest jaw-dropping
00:11 bombshells from the 'How I Met Your Mother' gang and company.
00:14 If you're not caught up, there will be spoilers.
00:17 "I'm not ready for this."
00:18 Number 10.
00:22 Robin's secret past.
00:24 In this season 2 episode, Robin mysteriously reveals that she doesn't go to malls.
00:29 Why is that?
00:30 Well, could it be because she doesn't want to be recognized by fans of her more
00:33 mature projects?
00:36 Or could it be because she was once married in one?
00:38 "She's not married. Robin hates marriage."
00:41 "Because she already got married at the mall."
00:44 "No, because before Robin moved to New York, she...
00:47 What was she doing?"
00:50 Okay, neither Barney nor Marshall's suggestions sound that plausible,
00:54 but we never would have guessed the real reason either.
00:58 In one of arguably the best and most hilarious surprises in the series,
01:02 we learn that Robin was a Canadian teen pop star called Robin Sparkles.
01:06 "For a whole year I lived off of orange Julius's and Wetzel's pretzels."
01:10 This reveal laid the groundwork for two iconic 'How I Met Your Mother' running gags.
01:19 Also, much like the gang, we can't get enough of 'Let's Go to the Mall.'
01:24 "Everybody come and play. Throw every last care away."
01:31 "Wow."
01:31 "Let's go to the mall today."
01:35 Number 9. Lily and Marshall Breakup.
01:40 Lily and Marshall's once rock-solid bond begins to crumble as Lily contemplates the road not taken.
01:47 But this is Marshmallow and Lily pad. They can get through anything, right?
01:51 "I'm gonna wait around for three months just to have my heart ripped out.
01:53 Marshall, I love you."
01:58 "Can you promise me that's not gonna happen?"
02:02 Sadly, no. Ted returns home ecstatic after officially getting together with Robin,
02:07 only to find Marshall alone and devastated, holding an engagement ring. We were shook.
02:13 Still, we knew these two were meant to be,
02:16 and it would only be a matter of time until they were back together.
02:19 However, what did surprise us was Barney's instrumental role in making that happen.
02:24 "You and Marshall belong together. The two of you have something that most people search
02:28 their whole lives for and never find. I know you love him, and if you knew what
02:31 he was going through right now, you wouldn't be here for one more second."
02:34 "I bought you a ticket home."
02:36 Still, you'd think Marshall would remember some of that pain when he
02:40 accepted the judgeship role without talking to his wife first.
02:44 "You still haven't told her?"
02:46 "No. This is face-to-face news."
02:49 "Good luck with that."
02:51 "Your honor."
02:52 Number 8. How Barney Became Barney.
02:56 A Brush With The Past reveals that Barney hasn't always been the suit-wearing,
03:00 catchphrase-spouting, whiskey-drinking, laser-tag-playing womanizer we came to know throughout the series.
03:07 "Dude, that's your G-friend? All right, high five."
03:10 "Sorry, I only give high twos."
03:12 "What is?"
03:15 In fact, he couldn't have been more opposite. Still, throughout the episode, he offers snippets
03:20 of his history, shedding light on the events that shaped the man he eventually became.
03:24 "All this granola business, it was just a phase. Greg's older. He's successful.
03:30 He buys me all this cool stuff."
03:33 "But I love you."
03:36 "But he has a boat."
03:38 Honestly, it's hard to decide what's more surprising, witnessing such a different side
03:43 of him or observing his transformation. The surprises don't end there. In the final season,
03:49 he unveils the last piece of his intricate revenge plot against the guy his girlfriend left him for.
03:55 "But this is pretty much revenge for stealing my girlfriend. See, that day I vowed I would
04:00 do everything in my power to track you down, gain your trust, and then destroy you."
04:05 Oh, and we finally learn what he does for a living.
04:09 Number 7. Barney Meets His Dad.
04:12 Barney yearns for a father figure so badly that, for a while, he allows himself to believe that
04:18 Bob Barker is his dad. Of course, deep down, he knows that's not true, and considers reconnecting
04:24 with his actual dad.
04:26 "Guys, I'm pretty sure that's not Louise, but I can't be certain. Someone introduce yourself."
04:31 Just as we thought this storyline would forever remain a loose end,
04:34 who should show up at his door?
04:36 "Barney, I...I got your letter."
04:42 "Dad?"
04:46 We believe we can speak for all of us when we say we were astonished when Jerome Whittaker
04:51 not only re-enters Barney's life, but is revealed to have been known as Uncle Jerry
04:56 during Barney's upbringing. As they begin building a relationship,
05:00 Barney grapples with the realization that his half-siblings had the childhood he longed for.
05:04 "You're just some lame suburban dad."
05:07 "Why does that make you so mad?"
05:08 "Because if you were gonna be some lame suburban dad, why couldn't you have been that for me?"
05:12 Number 6. Robin Learns She Can't Have Kids.
05:17 "And then the doctor said a bunch of medical stuff that...well, the gist of it was this.
05:22 I can't have a baby."
05:24 Robin has made it clear that she does not see kids in her future, but as she learns in a
05:29 devastating blow, there's a big difference between not wanting them and being unable to have them.
05:35 "I guess it's just nice knowing that you could someday do it if you changed your mind.
05:42 But now, all of a sudden that door is closed."
05:46 Still in an unexpected twist, we see her narrate this story to her two children,
05:52 making us believe that fate reopens that door somewhere down the line. But in another jolt,
05:57 we learn that these kids are just a fabrication of Robin's imagination
06:01 as she processes this life-altering news.
06:04 "No one getting in the way of my career. If you want to know the truth of it,
06:08 I'm glad you guys aren't real."
06:11 If the shock that Robin can't have kids felt like a gut punch,
06:18 this moment felt like the kind that knocks you to your knees.
06:21 Number 5. Stella Leaves Ted at the Altar.
06:26 We all had opinions on Stella and Ted's relationship, but let's face it,
06:31 their engagement and wedding were rashly impulsive decisions.
06:35 "Nora, don't worry. We got this."
06:38 "That's right. We'll take over your wedding, pay you back for everything you spent.
06:43 Ted and I'll get married this Sunday."
06:45 So we'd say that, yeah, this would have been a good time to pull out the old
06:49 intervention banner. Perhaps if they had, they would have saved Ted the heartache of
06:54 being stood up on his wedding day. But when you think about it, the clues were already there.
06:59 After all, isn't it Stella who said something about exes and unresolved feelings?
07:04 "Having exes around, I don't know, it brings up unresolved things.
07:09 How do you know that that spark won't come back with your ex sitting up there?"
07:13 On the big day, Ted is left heartbroken, holding Stella's note while his friends rally around him.
07:19 And where is Stella? Sailing away from Shelter Island with her ex, Tony.
07:23 "Seriously kids, never invite an ex to your wedding."
07:28 Number four, Barney becomes a father. In the last episode,
07:33 Barney tries to one-up his perfect week as seen in season five with a perfect month.
07:39 As the month comes to a close, the final woman, or number 31 as he calls her,
07:44 drops some life-changing news.
07:46 "That last girl, number 31."
07:48 "Oh, that's a pretty name. What is that, French?"
07:52 "She's pregnant."
07:54 Now, the last time Barney found himself in this predicament,
07:57 he celebrated the false alarm by inventing a new holiday called 'Not a Father's Day'.
08:02 But he sure won't be celebrating that anymore.
08:04 Given Barney's, let's call it, lifestyle choice,
08:08 it seemed inevitable that this could happen at some point.
08:10 "You are the love of my life."
08:13 What we couldn't have seen coming though, is Barney's mind-blowing transformation
08:18 from the first moment he lays eyes on his daughter.
08:21 "And everything I am, is yours. Forever."
08:32 Number three, Barney's getting married. And you'll never guess who the bride is.
08:38 Barney and Robin hooking up wasn't initially on our 'How I Met Your Mother' bingo cards.
08:43 But once they did, their relationship became a roller coaster of twists.
08:47 After their breakup, both move on to other relationships, and Barney's even getting married.
08:52 "The last wedding I ever thought I'd be at."
08:54 "What do you think of this tie?"
08:57 But to whom? Nora? Quinn? Hands up if you saw Robin as the blushing bride, because we didn't.
09:03 And our jaws hit the ground faster than anyone could say 'I do'. But how did we get here?
09:09 Well, it was all one big elaborate final play, ending with an engagement.
09:14 "Robin Scherbatsky."
09:15 "Will you marry me?"
09:18 "Yes."
09:26 We imagine we also weren't the only ones who'd barely scooped their jaws back into place before
09:31 the couple dropped them again by announcing their divorce.
09:34 "And when we got married, I made a vow that I would always tell you the truth."
09:44 "We got divorced."
09:45 Number two, 'The Mother's Fate'.
09:49 Apologies if we're rehashing old wounds, but you have to admit it,
09:53 this plot point was pretty shocking. Even more so when we learned that the clues had been there all
09:58 along.
09:58 "What mother is going to miss her daughter's wedding?"
10:00 "Oh hey, no, come on."
10:13 For nine seasons, we followed Ted through the highs and lows of love,
10:18 expecting it all to culminate with his dream woman, the mother of his children.
10:22 Instead, they introduce Tracy, make us root for her and her relationship with Ted, and then...
10:28 "Even then, in what can only be called the worst of times, all I could do was thank God.
10:33 Thank every God there is or ever was or will be, and the whole universe."
10:39 Adding to the blow, we learn that for a show called 'How I Met Your Mother',
10:43 Ted's story isn't even really about the mother.
10:46 "Dad, we love Aunt Robin!"
10:48 "Whenever she comes over for dinner, you guys are so obvious."
10:50 "Come on, Dad. Mom's been gone for six years now."
10:55 Love it or hate it, many fans are still reeling from the sting of this last-minute twist.
11:01 Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
11:05 'The Runaway Bride'.
11:07 We were all rooting for Ted and Victoria, but we weren't expecting that.
11:11 "If the coffee beans are good enough, you really don't need- Why are you in a wedding dress?"
11:15 "Well, I'm sort of supposed to get married today."
11:21 'Barney Gets Hit By a Bus'.
11:23 An unexpected turn swerves Ted and Barney's friendship onto a new path.
11:28 'Barney's Everlasting Second'.
11:39 Just as we thought the stars had aligned for Barney and Robin.
11:42 "For Barney, the second that would never end was this one."
11:46 Lili discovers Ted plans to leave New York.
11:57 Ted hopes his heartache will be a breeze in the Windy City.
12:01 "You're not leaving because you think the love of your life isn't in New York.
12:04 You're leaving because you think she is.
12:07 And this time next week, she'll be married to your best friend."
12:10 Tracy's boyfriend dies on her 21st birthday.
12:14 Her whole world is rocked, and we were pretty shaken too.
12:18 "Yes, this is she."

12:42 Number 1. Marshall's Dad Dies.
12:47 In one of the cleverest 'How I Met Your Mother' episodes, the writers sneakily included a
12:52 countdown leading to the titular bad news. Given that Lili and Marshall are dealing with
12:57 potential fertility issues, we anticipated it would revolve around that.
13:01 "And so now I'm just scared that we won't be able to give you a grandchild."
13:05 "Oh, Marshall. We don't care about that one bit. And if you guys want kids, there are other ways."
13:13 So as the countdown reached zero, we held our breaths in anticipation of a major revelation.
13:19 Little did we expect it to be as devastating as it turned out to be.
13:23 "Something's happened. Um, your father, he had a heart attack. He didn't make it."
13:33 'How I Met Your Mother' superfans might be aware that Jason Segel didn't see the
13:37 final version of the script before filming, so he had no idea what he'd be responding to.
13:42 His reaction is totally improvised, making his shock as authentic as ours.
13:48 "I'm not ready for this."
13:49 Which 'How I Met Your Mother' moment still has you shook? Don't wait for it. Tell us in the comments.
14:01 "You okay?" "Of course I'm not okay."
