Transcript
00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:20 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:22 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Monday 8th January.
00:28 Olympic Maidstone United reach the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time ever.
00:35 Safety in numbers, 150 joined together for mass cycle in Tunbridge.
00:40 And an Olympic hopeful, we speak with the Dartford youngster battling it out in international
00:45 squash.
00:49 But of course we start this evening with a huge weekend for Kent's sides in the FA Cup.
00:53 Sixth tier Maidstone welcomed League One's Stevenage to a packed out Gallagher Stadium
00:59 on Saturday with the hopes and dreams of forcing a huge cup upset.
01:04 A few miles north and Gillingham were ready to kick off against their Premier League opposition
01:08 Sheffield United.
01:09 Here's how our teams got on at the weekend.
01:12 It was the biggest game of their careers.
01:15 Sixth tier Maidstone United went into Saturday's game against League One's Stevenage with nothing
01:19 to lose.
01:20 They'd already reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time since the club
01:24 reformed in 1992 and were the lowest ranked side still in the competition.
01:29 The 12.30 kick-off was met with a sell-out crowd at the Gallagher Stadium and the action
01:34 got underway quick with both sides putting in their all and struggling to settle on the
01:38 ball early on.
01:39 69 places between these two sides on the football pyramid and Maidstone held their own in the
01:44 first 20 minutes, negotiating well against a stronger and bigger opposition.
01:49 United's big moment came in first half added time when Jacob 'Berkeley' Adepong was tripped
01:53 in the box.
01:54 The referee pointed to the spot and Sam Corn stepped up for his club.
01:57 A confident smash put the Stones ahead going into the break and the upset was on.
02:03 Maidstone weathered a heavy second half pressure with Steve Evans making two changes to his
02:07 Stevenage 11 but the visitors just couldn't get past the stonewall defence of Lucas Cavagnari
02:13 in goal.
02:14 Jubilation at the Gallagher with hundreds of Maidstone fans storming the pitch to enjoy
02:18 the win with their club as they reached the fourth round for the first time.
02:23 "We did the work in pre-season with them and we set out today to make sure history was
02:33 made.
02:34 We told our players, I told the players before they came out today to enjoy every bit of
02:37 it, leave everything on the football pitch and have no regrets at the end of it.
02:42 But I told them there was one more step, there was one more step and we could cause an upset
02:46 today, a big one."
02:47 Meanwhile at Priestville, Gillingham didn't have quite the same luck against their Premier
02:51 League opposition Sheffield United.
02:54 Another Kent upset looked unlikely at half-time with Will Sula scoring twice to put the visitors
02:59 two goals up.
03:00 A near-miss header from Max Zemer almost brought Gillingham back into it before James McAtee
03:05 added a late double for a 4-0 scoreline.
03:07 "Probably a little bit disappointed with the goals we conceded today.
03:11 I wouldn't like to concede them in League 2.
03:13 We can always moan about goals, etc. but I think the boys will be disappointed as well
03:18 when I've mentioned that to them in the dressing room.
03:21 But Sheffield United, they're worthy winners and good luck to them in the next round."
03:25 Elsewhere and league action continued for Kent's sides with Ebbsfleet starting the new
03:29 year with a much-needed three points.
03:31 They beat Weldstone at Stonebridge, marking the relegation Threshingside's first clean
03:36 sheet in 26 games and their third win in 21 National League matches.
03:41 In the National League South, just Tunbridge won out of Kent's playing sides, beating
03:44 Weymouth 2-1.
03:46 Bottom sitters Dover lost out 2-0 to Truro City and Dartford levelled with Western Super
03:51 Mare with Gillingham loanee Matty McArthur making his scoring debut for the Darts.
03:56 And finally down in the Yidsmeum Premier, no winners this week with second-placed Chatham
04:00 Town failing to find an equaliser against Bognor Regis.
04:03 Folkestone found a draw with Wingate and Finchley and ten-manned Margate suffered a last-minute
04:08 own goal to deny them a point.
04:12 So what a result that was for Maidstone, through to the fourth round for the first time ever
04:17 in their history.
04:18 And we'll find out just after Invicta Sport comes off air this evening who it is they'll
04:23 be facing with the draw set to take place on the official Emirates FA Cup channels at
04:27 7.50.
04:28 Now earlier today I caught up with Maidstone manager George Ilakobi and started by asking
04:32 him what is going through his mind right now.
04:35 It's not about what's going through my head.
04:38 I'm quite calm, taking everything in, but more so what is going through everyone connected
04:45 to our football club, our players, our staff, our owners, my management team and also everyone
04:54 that worked tirelessly behind the scenes around this environment to ensure that Saturday was
05:00 a success.
05:01 We all know this is history.
05:05 We've created history.
05:08 My job now, obviously, there's a lot of distractions going on.
05:12 I can't begin to tell you how overwhelmed the messages I've had have been all over the
05:17 globe.
05:20 Messages from countless messages in the UK, from Africa, from the United States of America.
05:29 So there's lots of people that have reached out again from former bosses, former owners
05:37 that I've worked with, that I've been employed by in terms of when I was playing.
05:41 Everyone is so, so delighted for myself.
05:44 However, we have a game tomorrow.
05:46 I know the draw is in a couple of hours' time and fingers crossed we'll get that big tie
05:52 hopefully away from home that we all wish for.
05:55 I have to try and get everyone's feet back on the ground because we have an important
06:00 game against Dartford tomorrow night here at the Galaga Stadium.
06:04 Absolutely.
06:05 I was going to ask about that.
06:06 There's so much buzz around Maidstone at the moment and you're in really good league form
06:10 too.
06:11 Obviously, you know all about that.
06:13 How will this affect your league approach then?
06:15 Because it's got to put some fire in the bellies of your team if it wasn't already there.
06:21 Our approach has been one game at a time and we have to be realistic like you touched on
06:26 it.
06:27 Yes, we've had a fine first half of the season and now we're going into the second half of
06:32 the season.
06:35 The FA Cup is a fantastic, fantastic distraction to have as a football club.
06:41 The boss is never going to leave because we are in the fourth round for the first time
06:46 in the FA Cup.
06:48 You can't deny our players, you can't deny our supporters that feeling.
06:54 But also as a manager and the management team, we have to make sure we keep reminding our
07:00 players that the league is our bread and butter this season.
07:05 Anything on top of that is a bonus.
07:08 We have to be professional and we have to enjoy this occasion because it's important.
07:13 It comes tomorrow, we'll be focused and we'll be ready for the game against a good side
07:19 in Batford.
07:20 Of course, and you mentioned as well the occasion, it carries on tonight.
07:24 You're going to have your team around you and some fans as well, I believe, at the club
07:29 bar.
07:30 What do you hope for with the draw?
07:33 You said a big team would be great.
07:34 What about Wolves?
07:35 What about your former club?
07:37 I always have to lean towards Wolverhampton, Mondres as my former club.
07:46 I call that my second home.
07:48 But definitely, they are at the top of my wish list.
07:53 I can't speak for some of our players, I can't speak for some of our fans, I can't speak
07:58 for our owners.
07:59 I think if we can draw one of the big teams in the Premier League, that would be a befitting
08:07 tie for us, not disrespecting all the other teams that are obviously still in the fourth
08:13 round.
08:14 But if we can draw one of them, we're looking for the jackpot tie here, which is going to
08:20 help us financially massively.
08:24 I'm sure, but mostly it's to give our players that experience of going away and playing
08:29 against a Premier League club.
08:33 For them to be able to experience the feel and learn from that experience, which is why
08:41 I'm hoping it's a big one for us today.
08:44 So again, fingers crossed.
08:48 Fingers crossed indeed.
08:49 I think it's all eyes on that draw at 7.50 this evening.
08:53 Well, whatever happens, I wish you the best of luck in the next round and of course in
08:57 your league endeavours this week too.
08:59 Thank you so much for joining us, George.
09:01 Thanks for having me.
09:02 Thank you.
09:03 What a man, George Ilakobi there.
09:06 And if you were wondering, Maidstone have ball 30 in the draw this evening.
09:10 I'm sure football fans across Kent will be hoping for a draw against one of the big Premier
09:14 League teams.
09:15 But of course, it was commiserations for Gillingham this weekend too, with their FA Cup run ending
09:20 against Sheffield United.
09:22 With the tensions turning now to the January transfer window, I talked to David Garth from
09:26 the Gillingham FC Supporters Club today and I started by asking what he thought of Saturday's
09:31 loss.
09:32 Yeah, I think obviously we're all disappointed.
09:35 Everyone would like to go through to the next round.
09:39 Realistically, it was always going to be a bit of a long shot.
09:42 But the one thing that did impress a lot of people, I think, myself included, was the
09:48 style of football that we played was probably better than we played against these sort of
09:54 sides for a long, long time.
09:56 And it's quite important as well because that Cup exit marks the exit of all the Cups now.
10:01 It's just the league ahead of us.
10:04 What do you make of this kind of position you're in now going forward?
10:07 Two wins on the bounce in the league.
10:09 Where do we go from here?
10:10 Yeah, I mean, we're only one point off the playoffs at the moment.
10:16 So it's still a very realistic aim, I think, to go forward.
10:20 It's really a matter, I guess, of what's going to happen in the transfer market.
10:24 There's already lots of rumours and speculation about who may or may not be coming in.
10:29 But we all know the obvious problem here is scoring goals.
10:33 I mean, I think in the last three games we've had about 50 chances, which is pretty exceptional.
10:42 But we're only putting away one goal a game, if that really.
10:46 So we need to get somebody somewhere that's going to actually benefit from the amount
10:51 of chances that we get.
10:52 And of course, as you mentioned, they're so close to the playoff positions, don't want
10:56 to move too far away from it if points have to be lost.
10:59 Thank you very much, David, for joining us.
11:01 You're very welcome.
11:02 Thank you.
11:03 Now, very shortly, it'll be time to head to a break.
11:06 But before we go, don't forget, you can keep up to date with all the latest Gillingham
11:10 FC news by reading Kent Online.
11:12 Did you also know that you can have your weekly digest of Gilles news sent directly to your
11:18 email inbox?
11:19 Just search Kent Online email alerts and sign up on the website for all the latest written
11:24 transfer news, especially in this window, match reports and interviews.
11:29 And if the Gilles isn't your cup of tea, there's now a brand new non-league football email
11:34 alert for you to sign up to as well.
11:36 Now, I'm sure lots of you will be following Maidstone's journey throughout the rest of
11:40 the season in the National League South as well.
11:42 Now, we've reached halftime, which means it is time for a break.
11:45 But coming up, we'll be speaking with the organiser of a mass cycle ride in Tunbridge,
11:49 plus the man, the boy who has just returned from the British junior Open of Squash.
11:53 See you in a few minutes.

15:08 Hello and welcome back to Invicta Sport
15:10 live on KMTV.
15:12 Now, next, over the Christmas period,
15:15 more than 150 cyclists
15:17 took to the streets of Tunbridge
15:19 to celebrate the method of active travel
15:21 and to encourage more people to take it up
15:23 as a form of commuting to school
15:25 or work. Earlier today, I spoke
15:27 to Alice Thomas, the organiser of the
15:29 Kittical Mass Cycle event about what
15:31 they aim to achieve.
15:33 Kittical Mass is a global movement,
15:35 so there have been over 400
15:37 Kittical Mass rides
15:39 across Europe and UK,
15:41 all with the sole goal
15:43 of promoting
15:45 safe cycling,
15:47 safe cycle infrastructure for children
15:49 and commuters alike,
15:51 to use cycling as a form
15:53 of transport from A to B.
15:55 And of course, we saw from all those
15:57 pictures and videos, lots of people enjoying
15:59 themselves, lots of smiles on faces.
16:01 So what did you find then with Tunbridge's
16:03 roads, about the usability
16:05 of the roads and any cycle lanes that were there?
16:07 Yeah, well,
16:09 Tunbridge,
16:11 it lends itself to being
16:13 a great place for more cycle
16:15 infrastructure. It's relatively flat,
16:17 it's already got
16:19 a couple of cycle routes
16:21 in and around the town,
16:23 but there definitely is
16:25 huge congestion on the high street,
16:27 so everybody
16:29 really enjoyed themselves. We had over
16:31 115 riders
16:33 join, which
16:35 was amazing, and they all enjoyed
16:37 themselves. It was great. We had young kids,
16:39 there were about two or three
16:41 on balanced bikes. We had older people
16:43 on their tricycles.
16:45 It was
16:47 a great event that brought the community together
16:49 and it just showed how many people really
16:51 enjoy cycling and would like
16:53 to cycle from A to B, and there'd be more
16:55 cycle routes in the town.
16:57 I think that's it, isn't it? You mentioned the young
16:59 children there, obviously it's called the Kiddercall Mass
17:01 Ride, so you had a lot of youngsters coming
17:03 out. What is it
17:05 about the safety in numbers,
17:07 having this big group all cycling together
17:09 that builds people's confidence for
17:11 maybe wanting to then go on and cycle on their own?
17:13 Yes, exactly.
17:15 So we had over 10
17:17 marshals
17:19 that helped with the ride
17:21 and it really gives all the kids
17:23 that confidence to ride together
17:25 because at the moment there isn't that
17:27 cycle infrastructure in place, so
17:29 the children don't necessarily have
17:31 the opportunity to cycle within a big group.
17:33 So it was great for them to come
17:35 together.
17:37 It just felt
17:39 quite powerful. Everyone
17:41 was just so happy, even all the
17:43 locals, the bus drivers were waving
17:45 and there is
17:47 definitely a huge
17:49 sort of anti-cyclist
17:51 movement.
17:53 There is a lot of negativity,
17:55 especially in the media around cycling
17:57 or cyclists, but
17:59 it was just an amazing event and it just
18:01 showed how many people do really
18:03 enjoy cycling and then also
18:05 it just gave people, even
18:07 pedestrians that were just walking on the side of the road
18:09 a big smile on their face. So it was
18:11 just a really positive event.
18:13 I think that's really interesting, what you
18:15 mentioned there about some of the negative sides of it.
18:17 I think that, we've spoken
18:19 about, we mentioned a few months ago
18:21 about people choosing to cycle,
18:23 whether it's to work or to school or just the
18:25 general commuting. I think there's
18:27 kind of, from what we found, there seems to be a bit
18:29 of a barrier, not with everyone, but between
18:31 people on kind of, maybe the
18:33 motorist side, maybe a minority
18:35 who see cyclists and
18:37 maybe because they haven't tried it out themselves
18:39 wouldn't understand
18:41 that maybe it is safe, it is
18:43 a really good benefit,
18:45 not just for yourself, for your health, but for
18:47 other people as well in terms of the environmental
18:49 benefits. What would your message be to
18:51 somebody who hasn't thought about cycling
18:53 and maybe 2024, New Year
18:55 and New Year's resolutions and everything
18:57 could maybe give it a go?
18:59 Definitely
19:01 it's never too late, whatever age
19:03 or ability you are,
19:05 you know, there's often
19:07 we think there's a lot of barriers, you know,
19:09 maybe in our mind or like physical barriers
19:11 but just get out there and do it.
19:13 There's many groups,
19:15 especially locally around Tunbridge,
19:17 whether you want to cycle
19:19 in a group,
19:21 whatever level you are, there's many groups
19:23 out there and I just think it's
19:25 a really great way to cycle from A to B
19:27 and it is safe.
19:29 One thing that's key is
19:31 getting to know the balance on the
19:33 bike, so, you know, if you aren't
19:35 too confident, then go to
19:37 where there are cycle lanes and just have
19:39 practice before you go on a road where you are
19:41 will be with traffic.
19:43 It's never too late to get out on the bike.
19:45 Never too late, absolutely. Alice,
19:47 thank you very much for that. Just before we go,
19:49 what are the plans moving forward?
19:51 Because I understand there might be something in the pipe work
19:53 for doing another critical mass ride,
19:55 maybe even more than 150 people could come along.
19:57 Yes, that's great.
19:59 Yes, so I do a lot of work with
20:01 the Tunbridge Bicycle user
20:03 group, they are doing another mass
20:05 ride for the A26
20:07 cycle route in the bid to
20:09 try and get that. It should be in
20:11 May or June, so
20:13 keep your eyes peeled on social media
20:15 for that ride. In terms of the
20:17 next steps for critical mass
20:19 in and around Tunbridge, we haven't
20:21 got a set date yet, so please follow us
20:23 on the Facebook
20:25 group, Tunbridge Critical Mass,
20:27 and we'll put updates on there for the
20:29 next ride. Absolutely, we'll all stay
20:31 tuned. Alice, thank you very much for joining us.
20:33 Thank you very much, thank you for having me.
20:35 And
20:37 finally, what did you get up to this
20:39 weekend? Maybe you watched some of the football,
20:41 took part in some local sport,
20:43 while our next guest from Dartford spent his
20:45 weekend representing England as
20:47 he competed in one of the most prestigious
20:49 international competitions
20:51 in his sport of squash.
20:53 Dylan Roberts has just returned from the
20:55 British Junior Open held in Birmingham,
20:57 where he competed in the boys under
20:59 17's category, and he joins me
21:01 on the line now to tell me all about it. Dylan,
21:03 thank you so much for joining us.
21:05 Welcome onto the programme. Now,
21:07 first of all, tell us, how did it all go
21:09 at the weekend?
21:11 So, the weekend,
21:13 it didn't go how I was hoping to go.
21:15 So, I was still quite tired
21:17 from the week before in America,
21:19 where I finished in the top 10.
21:21 This weekend,
21:23 in Birmingham, I came 20th,
21:25 so it wasn't too bad, but
21:27 I was hoping to do a bit better.
21:29 20th, that is fantastic
21:31 to hear, and obviously, as you say,
21:33 you do go around the
21:35 world competing. You do have quite
21:37 a busy schedule, and I understand before
21:39 you went into this competition,
21:41 you'd won the under 13's English
21:43 Junior Championship back in 2020.
21:45 So, what is your
21:47 kind of routine as you go into these tournaments?
21:49 Do you have a kind of usual
21:51 kind of... What's your kind of motions as you gear up
21:53 towards a tournament?
21:55 So, in the lead-up
21:57 to tournaments, I'll try and
21:59 play a lot of matches
22:01 just to build up my confidence
22:03 before the tournament. So, I'm going in there
22:05 feeling confident, feeling like
22:07 I'm going to do well, and then
22:09 a couple of days before,
22:11 I'll slow that down a bit
22:13 and take a day off,
22:15 maybe, so that my body
22:17 has time to relax, and then
22:19 we'll go into the tournament from there.
22:21 And, tell me, how was it
22:23 that you got into squash? Because it's not exactly
22:25 the most mainstream of sports,
22:27 but am I right in saying that your dad actually
22:29 played squash before you?
22:31 Yeah, so my dad
22:33 played squash around the corner from our house
22:35 at Bexley Park.
22:37 And I used to just go down there with him,
22:39 and then I'd try and get on court,
22:41 and he just got me really involved.
22:43 But, I mean, it's such a fast-paced
22:45 sport, and we just saw on the
22:47 screen there some clips, and it's really starting
22:49 to pick up some traction, because
22:51 it's actually going to be included in one of the next
22:53 Olympic Games. Not this year in Paris,
22:55 of course, but in the 2028
22:57 Los Angeles Games. So,
22:59 you're competing
23:01 in these junior competitions.
23:03 You're an Olympic hopeful now.
23:05 Is that the kind of dream for you?
23:07 Yeah, so that's always
23:09 been a dream from a young age, and now
23:11 that it's been put into the
23:13 LA 2028 Olympics,
23:15 that's going to be my goal
23:17 for the future. So,
23:19 that's what I'll be working towards in the next few years.
23:21 Absolutely.
23:23 And, I mean, it must give you
23:25 quite a boost as well to hear. I mean, it wasn't too
23:27 long ago that it was actually selected
23:29 as one of the Olympic sports for
23:31 2028. It must feel so good
23:33 as a player to have your
23:35 sport have such a boost, to hear
23:37 that more people are going to be interested in it.
23:39 Yeah, it's really good
23:41 to hear that the sport's getting a lot more recognition,
23:43 because it feels
23:45 recently like it hasn't been
23:47 heard enough
23:49 and watched enough, so it's been really good.
23:51 And you've heard a lot more
23:53 people talking about it, and hopefully it will get
23:55 a lot more funding into the sport as well.
23:57 Of course. Now, you,
23:59 as well as playing internationally, you must play
24:01 locally as well. What's the kind of scene
24:03 in Kent like?
24:05 So, the scene
24:07 in Kent is actually really good. The standard
24:09 is really high.
24:11 Recently, it's been improving.
24:13 We're trying to get a lot more juniors
24:15 involved in squash,
24:17 so that's where the
24:19 programme's at now. Oh, fantastic.
24:21 Now, I haven't played squash before,
24:23 I must admit. What would be your
24:25 advice to somebody who's trying it out? Because
24:27 it is very fast-paced, as we've already said.
24:29 It's not like playing tennis.
24:31 To
24:33 start with playing squash, I'd just say give it a
24:35 go, because it's a good way to...
24:37 It's a good workout, and it's
24:39 fun. You can socialise with other people.
24:41 So, just really give it a go.
24:43 Well, Dylan, maybe we'll have to come along
24:45 and meet you in person,
24:47 and then you can show us exactly how to do it.
24:49 Dylan, thank you very much for joining us. All the best
24:51 for the future.
24:53 Now, before we go this evening, we're going to take
24:57 a quick look at Action Replay.
24:59 It's the segment where you, the KMCV
25:01 viewers, send us in pictures of you taking
25:03 part in sport, wherever you are.
25:05 Today's Action Replay is a
25:07 shivering start as folks brave the
25:09 Boxing Day dip on the beaches of Folkestone,
25:11 Sheerness and Deel.
25:13 The annual event to raise money
25:15 for local charities features costume
25:17 dippers braving a five-stroke
25:19 wind challenge in waters as cold as
25:21 eight degrees, with some of dubious
25:23 sanity even completing the challenge.
25:25 Next up,
25:27 a previous guest of Invicta Sport
25:29 and British champion of big air
25:31 kite surfing, Jeremias Cuxma,
25:33 just achieved a new personal
25:35 best. Captured by
25:37 the Infinity Sport is the moment Jeremias
25:39 topped it.
25:41 And lastly,
25:43 we're not kidding when we say
25:45 the Kittical Mass Ride in
25:47 Tunbridge was a big success.
25:49 Unbothered by the dismal weather
25:51 and wet roads, these intrepid
25:53 cyclists rode a two-kilometre
25:55 circular route around Tunbridge with
25:57 pride and determination.
25:59 And from these smiles, they're more
26:01 than happy to ride any distance to
26:03 promote their mission to have an inclusive
26:05 space to cycle all.
26:07 Well, that's it for this week's Action Replay.
26:09 Don't forget it. It could be
26:11 you in next week's edition. Just send
26:13 in your pictures and videos on social
26:15 media or to sport@kmtv.co.uk.
26:21 And just like those taking part in
26:23 the Mass Cycle Ride,
26:25 you can also appear in Action Replay
26:27 if you send in your clips to
26:29 sport@kmtv.co.uk
26:31 or to any of our social media
26:33 accounts. Now, that's it from full, that's
26:35 it full time on today's episode of
26:37 Invicta Sport. If you want more, you can watch
26:39 our website, kmtv.co.uk.
26:41 But for me, we'll have another episode on
26:43 Friday. I'll see you then. Bye-bye.
