00:00 You are 2024 National Champion.
00:03 Please tell me how you're feeling.
00:05 - I think I'm just in shock.
00:06 I just like, last couple of years I wanted this so bad
00:10 and every year I finish just a bit disappointed.
00:13 I just can't believe that.
00:15 Yeah, I just wanted to do it so bad today
00:16 and I had amazing legs.
00:19 I mean, it helped that I was always up the road
00:20 on the climb, but yeah, I couldn't thank my team enough.
00:23 Like really, really, like this is the best group.
00:27 And yeah, I'm just in shock and the last time Valor at like.
00:32 - How did you build this win?
00:33 - Yeah, well, I did a lot of preparation over the summer
00:37 and yeah, I had amazing legs today.
00:40 I felt really, really good.
00:41 It helped that I was over the top of the climb
00:43 without Sarah Degante a few times
00:45 'cause she is so strong, but yeah,
00:47 I just had an amazing day and just kept, yeah,
00:50 rolling with the moves and really wanted it,
00:52 but tried to also play it cool a little bit
00:54 and not overwork it.
00:55 - Yeah, I think in the past I've overworked this race a lot,
00:59 like tried to do too much too early
01:00 and it's a race that you can't really come in
01:03 with a really rigid plan,
01:04 which I kind of like to do in the past.
01:06 And this year, I really knew I just had to be fluid
01:10 and, you know, see what happened, just trust my instincts.
01:13 And so I just kept rolling with it,
01:14 but like keeping a little bit in reserve and yeah,
01:17 just had the best legs I've had in a long while on the day.
01:20 So yeah.
01:22 - When we look at the week, two jerseys for you.
01:24 What this one means, what does that mean for you?
01:26 - Oh, this one means so much.
01:28 The crit is great.
01:29 Like it was a race that I've done a lot and I love it,
01:34 but this is another level, like bringing it to Europe.
01:37 It means so much to the team, like with Jacob, Lula,
01:39 you know, I think Jerry's here today.
01:41 So yeah, it's a really, really special thing
01:44 as an Australian team to bring that jersey home.
01:46 - And I can tell you, before the start,
01:48 I walked out of the coffee shop to get a coffee,
01:50 bumped into your dad.
01:51 He was as cool as a cucumber.
01:53 You know what, we didn't even talk about the race.
01:55 We were talking about life in Brunswick,
01:57 how much we love the suburb.
01:59 So good to have your family here as well.
02:01 - Yeah, yeah, my family's here and my dad,
02:03 especially 'cause he got me into the sport.
02:05 He actually came third in the 180 teams.
02:08 - Take us through this last crit.
02:10 It was a drag race, wasn't it, to the line?
02:13 - Yeah, honestly, I wasn't really thinking.
02:15 I was just so, I wanted it so bad
02:17 and like I knew I had the legs.
02:19 So it was one of those moments where you just in flow,
02:22 in race mode, what you've done a thousand times before.
02:24 And yeah, I can't even really articulate what happened.
02:29 - Gracie said in the interview with you
02:30 that it will take a few days, if not weeks, to sink in.
02:34 What's the program, what's for the next week for you?
02:36 - Yeah, next week I have Tour Down Under,
02:38 so I'm really excited for that.
02:40 It's just another special race.
02:41 And then Cadelles, which is another close to home race
02:44 coming from Melbourne.
02:45 So yeah, I'm really, really excited for those two races
02:48 and can't wait to wear the jersey.
