00:00 >> Between the undefeated Daniel "Chucky" Barrera, as he takes on the very experienced
00:06 Gilberto Mendoza.
00:09 Looking at Mendoza, durable guy, he's only been stopped four times as a pro.
00:16 And Daniel Barrera, he's looking for the fourth stoppage in the hunt of his fourth win.
00:22 All of his wins come by way of knockouts.
00:26 He'd joined an elite few to hand Gilberto Mendoza a knockout loss.
00:33 We'll see what he can do here tonight as we are scheduled again, four rounds of boxing.
00:38 We're talking about quick rounds earlier with the women's fight.
00:42 For a guy like Mendoza, who has a wealth of experience, coming down to a four round fight,
00:48 that's got to be something that he hasn't experienced in a while.
00:49 >> I don't think that that favors him.
00:50 That definitely favors the young up-and-comer, Chucky Barrera, because I have to think it
00:58 usually takes him four or five rounds to warm up because Mendoza is a solid eight, ten round
01:03 fighter.
01:04 >> Right, you're used to that sort of warm up period, just finding your groove, finding
01:09 that timing, and you're not going to have that luxury in a four round fight.
01:14 I'm going to guess it takes a minute to find that rhythm and range when you're taking on
01:19 a guy like Chucky Barrera, who ends the night of a lot of guys before they can even find
01:24 their rhythm.
01:25 >> If Chucky could get a knockout tonight, that's a big feather in his cap.
01:31 >> For coaches that have an experienced guy like Mendoza in the dressing room, they have
01:34 to warm him up a lot more because he's going out there for a four round fight.
01:39 You have to warm him up so he's ready to go for that four rounds quickly.
01:44 >> What does that warm up look like, Abel?
01:46 Are you, basically, putting in rounds on pads back there?
01:50 >> Yes, and not only that, you have to be talking to him to make him understand that
01:55 these rounds are going to go by quickly.
01:56 >> Right.
01:57 >> Four rounds are over so quickly that you have to start right off the bat.
02:05 >> We know that Chucky Barrera is not one to take too much time out there.
02:11 >> He's got his fundamentals down.
02:18 He's looking really good.
02:25 I love his balance.
02:34 He's got a good balance.
02:50 >> Two minutes down in this opening round.
03:10 >> He's got a good balance.
03:36 >> He's got a good balance.
03:44 >> Final moments here in this opening round.
03:50 Combination strikes there.
03:55 Round 104 in the books.
04:05 Sunday night here in Southern California.
04:08 Sir Haifo and Chuck hanging out with the promoter, Tom Laughler.
04:12 It's going to be a fun night.
04:14 It's already been a fun night.
04:16 A lot more still yet to be had here on the UFC Fight Pass.
04:21 It wasn't that long ago, like 35 days ago, we saw Boa Chuck make a huge statement against
04:26 Patrick Allette, citing things of the future, the Ukrainian.
04:32 Come back inside here for this one.
04:36 Daniel "Chucky" Barrera.
04:37 Got to be pleased with that first round.
04:42 >> I'll tell you what, I'm impressed with that opening round.
04:45 I think that's the best I've seen Chucky.
04:48 That's his most disciplined technique that I've ever seen from him in a pro fight.
04:53 >> He's definitely not in awe of the experience.
04:57 >> Yeah, he was focused and he was poised.
05:09 >> Consistent with that jab is Barrera.
05:16 Doubling up on it.
05:18 You mentioned the maturity and patience of Barrera.
05:20 Like our headliner Callum Walsh, a young man, 21 years old, showcasing the maturity and
05:28 patience of a big, experienced pro boxer.
05:32 >> Abel's noticing.
05:34 Was that sign language for angles?
05:36 >> He's moving his feet so well.
05:38 He looks much, much more than a pro-wrestler.
05:41 Very seasoned in there today.
05:43 >> He really does.
05:45 >> Like I said, this is the best form I've seen from him.
05:50 And his form in his last outing was really good.
05:53 He was definitely on the hunt in that fight.
05:57 He knew he could get his opponent out of there.
05:59 He targeted the body, got the knockout.
06:01 And this fight, we're seeing all the boxing wrinkles, the fighter points of the sweet science.
06:09 We didn't get a chance to see this Chuckie in the last one.
06:16 >> Mendoza being a bit more aggressive in this round than he was in the opening frame.
06:20 I think Barrera's making pay for it.
06:27 Touch under 90 seconds remain here in round number two.
06:32 >> Chuckie's not in a rush, and yet he's in control.
06:36 He's controlling the distance, and he's controlling the pace of this match thus far.
06:42 >> Good body again there is Barrera.
06:57 I think you bring up a good point, Doug, in the last fight with Barrera,
07:01 he could afford to be super aggressive and put on the pressure
07:05 because his opponent that night, he just couldn't handle it.
07:07 You can't get overzealous with someone like Mendoza, who again has 38 fights,
07:11 has only been stopped four times in his career.
07:15 You can't force the issue.
07:17 If it's not there, don't try to necessarily find it.
07:20 Wait for it to come and present itself.
07:23 >> Just do what Chuckie's doing right now, which is outboxing the veteran.
07:27 >> That's the other thing, Abel.
07:31 We talk about getting in and out of there quickly.
07:34 The guy for Chuckie Barrera, he needs to put in more time.
07:37 He needs to put in these rounds.
07:39 Quick knockouts are good.
07:41 Don't get me wrong, you're never going to say no to a win, but it's good to get some red time.
07:44 >> Well, for a coach, we're never going to say that to a fighter.
07:46 >> Right, of course.
07:47 >> Because we didn't work in the gym.
07:48 But he was very disciplined, and that's so important.
07:51 The knockout will come because of his discipline.
07:53 >> Halfway point here of this fight.
07:58 Two down, two to go.
08:00 Abel, your thoughts so far on what we're seeing from Chuckie?
08:03 >> You know, I'm so impressed.
08:05 I've been concentrating and watching Chuckie, and he reminds me so much of the old Beristan fighters
08:10 with their hands up and in and out.
08:12 >> I was thinking that.
08:13 >> Yeah.
08:14 >> Looks so much like the Marquez brothers and stuff like that.
08:17 >> Yeah, or even a Finito Lopez.
08:19 >> In and out, he's moving his legs together.
08:23 He's not overreaching.
08:25 He's on top of his legs.
08:27 And that's so important.
08:28 And when he lands a jab, when he lands a good shot, you can see Mendoza get pushed back a little bit.
08:34 >> Yeah, I really like how economical and accurate Barrera is with his punches.
08:41 And I have to think now, we're looking into Mendoza's corner, there has to be a sense of urgency.
08:46 I mean, would you be cracking the whip, Abel, if he was your friend?
08:50 >> Absolutely.
08:51 I'd be saying, "Listen, what are we waiting for?"
08:52 We only have two rounds left.
08:55 Come on, let's go.
08:56 >> You tell him, "Hey, you know what? This kid's a beautiful boxer. He's proven that. Make it ugly."
09:01 >> And Mendoza's out here. He's trying to make a fight of it.
09:09 Getting aggressive.
09:10 Really coming forward, trying to put the pressure on Barrera, is Mendoza.
09:20 The crowd here inside Commerce Casino, getting the Chucky chant going.
09:25 >> Yeah, he sells tickets.
09:26 >> I would be telling Mendoza, "This kid's got four fights. We've fought champions. What are you waiting for?"
09:33 >> Yeah, the pep talk, right?
09:35 >> And it does look like Mendoza's trying to get in there and mix it up a little bit more.
09:53 >> Listen, it won't be bad if Chucky gets a decision here, if he doesn't get the knockout.
09:57 Why? Because he's gonna learn from Mendoza some of the things that some of the other guys have not proposed.
10:03 >> Yeah, he's got four belts, but the competent, experienced professionals.
10:09 That'll enable him to step up to the six-round level quickly.
10:21 >> You know, I'm curious, Abel, when you look at Chucky Barrera, 21 years old, four fights in,
10:26 it's gotta be a calculated decision to take a fight with someone who's this experienced as Mendoza.
10:33 Not every 21-year-old who's 3-0 and 1 is necessarily ready to fight someone the likes of Mendoza with the record.
10:41 >> No, but you have to give credit not only to the matchmakers, but to the coaches that are looking at video,
10:45 that are studying the opponents and making sure that they're putting the guy in front of your fighter
10:52 that's gonna give him the best test.
10:54 And obviously still, you wanna win, but you wanna get a testimony because you wanna go home, you wanna develop.
10:59 >> Right.
11:00 >> Yeah. Chucky is moving, he's smooth like butter in there.
11:03 He's just dipping under and getting around punches, fluidly.
11:12 And he's landed every punch in the book against Mendoza.
11:16 Mendoza's taken all these shots really well, including the body shots, which is impressive.
11:20 But I would say, um, Barrera's best punch--
11:24 [crowd cheering]
11:26 It's gonna be--
11:27 I'm gonna say Barrera's best punch in this fight so far, I think, has been his jab.
11:34 >> You know, you asked me what I would be telling Mendoza.
11:39 What I would be telling Barrera is, "This is perfect.
11:42 Just keep boxing, whatever happens, happens, but keep boxing and don't get too aggressive,
11:48 but just keep landing your jab, keep landing your shots, and, uh, do your part, you know?
11:53 It's okay to get a bit of a hit, you see?"
11:55 >> Three down, one to go.
11:59 In this, our second fight of the night. Flyweight's inside the ring.
12:07 One of the best in the business in mixed martial arts, referee Mike Beltran.
12:11 Always in the building when Hollywood Fight Nights is going down here at Commerce Casino.
12:15 Great to see him taking in the action.
12:18 About to head into our fourth and final round.
12:26 Abel, why don't you share some of the action here?
12:28 >> Well, I see Chucky positioning himself so well with the shots.
12:31 That right hand was a shot that was effective because it came from good balance.
12:37 I really like what he's doing in there today.
12:39 Mendoza's trying, but he's got a guy in front of him that's so fundamental in sound that it's gonna be difficult.
12:45 >> We'll see what the demeanor is for both men here in this fourth and final round.
12:51 For Mendoza, you gotta believe it's gonna be pedal to the metal here and get aggressive,
12:56 as Barrera is definitely up on the cards in this fight.
13:02 >> Stay tight!
13:03 >> Let him go, let him go, let him go!
13:07 Work at him, work at him!
13:08 There you go!
13:09 >> We're in body there.
13:16 It's Chucky.
13:17 Mendoza has taken some shots by the shots.
13:21 He's a tough guy.
13:24 [crowd shouting]
13:26 >> Not all fighters are fortunate enough to work with the likes of Chocolatito and some of the great fighters.
13:39 It shows the learning, the schooling that Chocolatito shows, is helping with.
13:47 He's a lucky young man.
13:52 >> Two minutes left here in the fight.
13:54 >> The great thing is he's taken elements.
13:58 He's not trying to fight like Gonzalez.
14:00 He's developing his own ring identity.
14:04 And he's beautiful, and he's a joy to watch.
14:08 But I gotta tell you, this is the best I've seen him.
14:13 This is the best I've seen him in the ring or in the gym.
14:20 I've seen him train, yeah, I've seen him spar.
14:22 And so, you know, what this tells us is he's growing up.
14:26 He's coming into his own at the tender age of 21.
14:30 And we shouldn't be shocked, because he's talented, he's intelligent, and he has a good amateur background.
14:38 He was maybe rated number one in the nation before he turned pro.
14:44 >> He's a very capable guy in front of the crowd.
14:46 >> Yeah.
14:49 >> Guy who's experienced and a little bit awkward.
14:52 A little bit herky-jerky at this.
14:55 And that can throw off a young fighter, but not Chuckie Berron.
15:00 >> And as you mentioned, Mendoza, you know, just James still trying to come forward inside the final minute of this fight.
15:07 He knows where he stands in it, but he's trying to make something happen and take matters into his own hands.
15:18 >> But on point tonight has been Daniel "Chuckie" Barrera.
15:21 30 seconds left here in this fourth and final round.
15:24 Chuckie initiating that clinch, slowing things down.
15:44 And that's something you normally see from more mature fighters, more experienced fighters.
15:48 There we go, four rounds in the books.
15:58 Another solid performance tonight for Riverside's Daniel "Chuckie" Barrera.
16:03 Likely picking up his fourth win.
16:10 And...oh, looks like this is more...
16:15 A six-rounder, okay.
16:18 >> Well, they didn't put that on my piece of paper.
16:21 >> Yeah, not surprised at all. Hopefully it's not surprising to fighters.
16:24 Doesn't look like it.
16:25 >> Tabitha Richie, she's down to watch more boxing action.
16:28 >> You know, you mentioned him clinching.
16:31 It's important for a young fighter to understand, it's not bravery, it's smart.
16:35 You go in there, you do your shots, you're out of position, you hold a little bit, let the referee break it up.
16:39 Let's get back to position again. There's nothing wrong with that.
16:42 >> Yeah, that's what we call ring general.
16:44 And he's gonna need that as he climbs the ladder.
16:48 >> And I don't think that either athlete is surprised that this is a six-round fight.
16:58 I think that's only us.
16:59 Maybe some people around the ring as well, as Lupe Cotreras corrects the program here.
17:05 But we are underway.
17:08 >> I don't mind another two rounds of Chucky Barrera.
17:11 And I'm sure Mendoza doesn't mind.
17:13 >> See, I'm gonna get you to come around to the women's, you know, more is better.
17:18 >> More is better. Sometimes more is more.
17:21 >> Chucky's starting to land a nice counter hook.
17:24 >> Yeah, he's timing it right.
17:26 If he catches Mendoza launching a left hook, his left hook's gonna get there first.
17:32 You might at least see a knockdown.
17:36 >> I still say that jab, especially when he doubles up on it, that's his best punch of the fight.
17:40 But he's showing us everything. He's not just showing us every punch.
17:45 He's showing us all aspects of boxing.
17:48 He's showing us the technique, he's showing us the defense.
17:51 And as we noted previously, he's showing us the ring general shit.
17:55 Knowing when to slow things down, when to tie things up.
17:59 When to take a pause and then when to step back on the gas pedal.
18:03 >> All around well-rounded professional performance thus far here for Daniel "Chucky" Barrett.
18:09 Eddie Hernandez separating these two, getting back at space.
18:19 >> That's a start for Chucky right now when he goes inside and ties up.
18:25 He's gonna learn in the future how to slide over and not have to tie up and be in position to be able to move your hands.
18:31 That's the beginning of it, though, right here, to be right in that position.
18:34 He doesn't have to be directly in front of him.
18:36 Once he ties up, his legs need to be moving to one side to be in position to be able to...
18:40 >> Keep working. >> Keep working, exactly.
18:42 Chavez was a master at that. >> Yes.
18:58 >> Inside the final minute of the fifth round.
19:01 In scheduled for six.
19:04 I think that's what's most impressive about Chucky's output here is, you know, the last fight he was such an aggressive boxer,
19:26 but showcasing the ability to be patient, to counter strike at times, to deal with unorthodox, as you said,
19:33 perky jerky type of performance in fighter in Mendoza.
19:37 Barrett is able to make adjustments and adaptations as the fight unfolds,
19:42 and the best fighters in the world, they're the best because they're able to do things like that.
19:47 >> The adjustments are very important.
19:50 But he's got a guy in front of him that's experienced, and I'm sure Chucky notices that and can see that.
19:57 So he's not going to take the unnecessary chances.
19:59 >> Five down, one to go.
20:02 Inside the corner here of Gilberto Mendoza.
20:10 He has been aggressive, trying to take matters into his own hands to reverse the momentum of this fight.
20:18 And time definitely not on his side as we head into the sixth and final round of this fight.
20:24 See a lot of stars here in Hollywood Fight Night, so we've seen that young man shine.
20:32 25 and 6 with 10 knockouts, that is Cain Sandoval.
20:36 Definitely fun to watch him do work inside the ring, and I'm sure we're going to see him back again real soon here at Hollywood Fight Night.
20:47 [whistle]
20:49 About to start the sixth and final round.
20:52 TJ DeSantis, Abel Sanchez, Doug Fisher, appreciate you joining us live here on UFC Fight Pass.
21:01 Abel, if you were in the corner of Chucky Pereira, what are you telling your charge to do in this sixth and final round?
21:12 A fight that you pretty much control.
21:14 I'm going to continue what you're doing.
21:16 Oh, that was a nice right hand.
21:18 Another one landed by Mendoza.
21:20 Hey, remember what I told you, a guy like him needs four or five rounds just to warm up.
21:25 This is where I was saying in the last round that Chucky notices the experience and is not going to take any chances.
21:32 He's got to come up with a good shot because, as Doug pointed out, Mendoza's finding the holes.
21:37 Put it up with him.
21:40 Mendoza into business here as he's trying to port a pawn into Chucky Pereira, but
21:46 Pereira's still game and has his wits about him, not hurt, and the crowd coming alive to show their support.
21:55 Pereira did a good job punching off those ropes.
22:00 He was setting traps for the aggressive veteran.
22:04 Landed some nice counter hooks, earned a little bit of respect, and then got off the ropes.
22:10 He did well to stay patient.
22:12 Because you got hit with a good shot doesn't mean you come back and you try to go crazy.
22:15 Right.
22:16 Just keep doing what you're doing.
22:27 Early on you're going to have a lot of these guys that are going to be durable, that are going to take shots.
22:31 You're best shot and you keep coming.
22:33 You just have to stay patient and if the person doesn't come, you get a decision. That's okay.
22:38 90 seconds left in the fight.
22:43 I think you bring up a good point, Abel.
22:52 I mean, everyone loves a knockout. All the wins so far on Chucky Pereira's resume are by way of knockout.
22:58 But you can't knock everyone out.
23:00 You're living in a dream world if you think you're going to be able to knockout everyone at the higher ranks in professional boxing.
23:06 Some guys do, but it's a select few that are better than the power of Chucky.
23:11 His forte is going to be setting up the shots and he's got good balance, good technique.
23:17 Sets up the shots at the knockout.
23:19 [crowd cheering]
23:24 I think that's the most important thing as well.
23:30 Leave no doubt. If you're going to make a decision, leave no doubt.
23:33 30 seconds left in the fight.
23:44 [crowd cheering]
23:49 Alright, that's the final bell.
24:02 Confirmed by the embrace of the two athletes who go the distance six rounds in the books.
24:09 The judges are going to sort this one out, but like you guys said, I think we're in route to the fourth win for Daniel "Chucky" Pereira.
24:19 It'll be the first win that doesn't come by way of knockout, but this one might be the biggest statement of his career by far.
24:26 He stayed composed for six rounds, did his thing for six rounds, made a mistake and got caught with a shot, but still stayed composed.
24:34 So that's the best thing that could have happened.
24:38 His previous four opponents combined for 13 fights.
24:42 Tonight he was in with a guy with more than 30 pro fights and a guy who'd been in with world-class opposition.
24:49 A guy who came to fight, especially. He poured the heat on him and that sets the fight around.
24:55 And Pereira, he showed poise and confidence under professional resistance.
25:07 Big statement tonight.
25:09 Well-rounded professional performance from the 21-year-old Daniel "Chucky" Pereira.
25:14 Judges have tallied their tens and nines.
25:18 To make this one official, we've got a Lupe Contreras.
25:21 After going all six rounds here at the Commerce Casino and Hotel, we go to the scorecards.
25:26 All three judges turn in identical scores of 60 to 54 in favor of the winner by way of unanimous decision.
25:35 Still undefeated, Daniel "Chucky" Pereira!
25:45 Now 4-0-1, Daniel "Chucky" Pereira.
25:50 A fan favorite. Definitely a guy who sells a lot of tickets.
25:55 And the fans that came out tonight to Commerce Casino, they had a lot to cheer for.
25:59 That fan base is going to be a lot of fun.
