Transcript
00:00 Here's your A to Z guide to Yorkshire. Yes, we are much more than puddings, tea and flat
00:07 caps, but they're also important too. So you've nominated your favourite people, places, things,
00:14 Yorkshire stuff in our alphabet to Yorkshire. Starting with A. Not A for A up, but actually
00:22 it relates to A up because we're talking about accents. Yorkshire's been voted one of the
00:28 most friendly accents here in the UK. Whether you're saying "Gee-or", give over, that's
00:35 right, good, that's really good. Or "Are you lacking?" which is the same as "Are you playing
00:42 out?" There's all sorts of fabulous words, phrases that make Yorkshire the fabulous,
00:49 God's own county we are. Okay, going on to B. You have a lot of good Yorkshire grub.
00:56 Yes, Botham's lemon buns. The Whitby lemon buns are extremely popular and they're flying
01:03 out like hotcakes thanks to all the media coverage and TV appearances these iced lemon
01:09 buns have. But there's a real debate in Whitby and Fervorfield how you actually eat them.
01:16 But locals and also the founders, Botham family, also say this is how you eat a Botham lemon
01:24 bun, by ripping it apart, turning it over, buttering one side so you don't get sticky
01:31 fingers and you've got a nice ice bun sandwich. Going on to C. Cinemas. Yorkshire, we have
01:40 some of the best independent cinemas you can think of. From the fabulous Hyde Park Picture
01:46 House to the DocFest which is held at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield, one of the largest
01:52 documentary festivals in Europe and indeed the UK. And that's here in Yorkshire. That's
01:59 not forgetting all the different showroom cinemas, Cineworlds, Odeon's and also smaller
02:06 independent cinemas such as the one at Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. There's all
02:12 sorts of places to see your favourite films, old films and new and upcoming documentaries.
02:19 Going on to D. Days Out. Now when it comes to days out in Yorkshire, there are so many
02:25 places to go, things to do. From going to your favourite theme park, whether it be Flamingo
02:32 Land, Gulliver's Kingdom or Lightwater Valley, to going off and exploring the fabulous Yorkshire
02:40 moors, the countryside over in Ilkley. There's tons of places to go for a day out in Yorkshire
02:48 whether you want it free or slightly more costly. Now E. Events. Yes, we are the home
02:56 of many events and we're also going to go on to F as well because that's festivals.
03:01 Yes, we have tons of events here whether they be at Peace Hall, Harewood House, Big Arenas
03:07 or you might want to go to Scarborough as well where there's been Britney Spears and
03:11 all sorts of stars at events. And we also have some really fabulous local fringe events
03:17 because the Yorkshire community is like no other. Where we come together and we will
03:23 celebrate everything from carrying coal sacks to actually celebrating the latest book release
03:29 that's out in Yorkshire. We have tons going on in our communities. And that brings us
03:37 on to G. Yes, G for glamping. So whilst we do like to rough it up, get out into the Yorkshire
03:44 fields and the sticks, we also like a bit of glamping. Yes, basically a glamorous camping.
03:52 So whether that be you're going in lodges or little teepees, there's all sorts of places
03:58 where you can have a glamorous camping experience here in God's own county. And it's becoming
04:05 increasingly popular as so many people are on staycations here in the region. And that
04:12 brings us on to H for hideaways. So if you fancy a bit of a glamp, but hiding away in
04:21 a tree hut or a yurt, and there's all sorts of off-grid places where you can go to escape
04:28 from writers' retreats to an old monastery in Mayfield where you can stay. Airbnb has
04:35 opened up a whole new world of hideaways. And that brings us on to I for Instagrammable
04:43 places. Yes, if you want that perfect picture, because you want to get a picture perfect
04:48 for Instagram or social media, there are tons of places to go from that favourite door,
04:56 the old doors, whether it be in Sheffield city centre, Wakefield city centre, Hull,
05:02 wherever you want to go, there's tons of places to capture that perfect picture. And lots
05:08 of shopping centres such as Trinity Walk, you've got a riding shopping centre, Meadowhall
05:14 shopping centre, you've got all sorts of places that will have purposely Instagrammable walls,
05:20 lights and all sorts, and even the bogs are somewhere to go to take that perfect selfie.
05:27 Next up we've got jewellery. Now we were told between jewellery and Whitby Jet, but that
05:32 all combines it. We've got a Zenji jewellery, for example, who's inspired by Yorkshire when
05:39 it's creating their silver, beautiful silver jewellery. You've got different diamond jewellers,
05:45 Pugata and Batley. You've got little secret jewellery outlets like that, but of course
05:50 we are home of the Whitby Jet, which is incredible. And you can see one of the largest pieces
05:56 of jet still in Whitby at the Whitby Jet Museum, where there's even a cafe inside so you can
06:02 sit round and think, "God, could I actually carry that on my neck?" And then going on,
06:08 we have got K for kitchens, because I'm not talking about your kitchen cabinets, although
06:13 I'm sure you've got lots of fabulous places to store your grub, but kitchens are where
06:19 the best Yorkshire grub is inspired. So from home cooks to professional cooks to Michelin
06:26 starred restaurants, we have tonnes of kitchens here in Yorkshire, serving up the best takeaways,
06:33 the best restaurant food, and of course the best roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds, and obviously
06:41 meat, or if you like meat, vegan food for your Yorkshire dinner, your Sunday dinner
06:46 even. Then we've got lots of lakes here in Yorkshire. Yes, there are tonnes of places
06:52 to go, not just by the seaside, but actually by a bit of water as you go for a lovely walk
06:59 round the old reservoir. There are tonnes of places to go outdoors here in the beautiful
07:06 Yorkshedales and even round the Yorkshire cities. Then we've got M for motors. Yes,
07:12 it's not just Bradford, one of the best cities for cars and motors that love our motors.
07:18 Across Yorkshire, we have lots of places from bikers cafes to different car influences,
07:25 She Talks Cars, Cops and Cars events. We love our cars and vehicles, and don't forget those
07:32 motorhomes. Oh my days, you should have seen them at the Holiday Home Show. It's a new
07:39 show. Anyway, going on to N for National Trust. Yes, you know you've got to a certain
07:45 age like my age when you start getting a National Trust membership, but actually they're really
07:50 great for any age because National Trust have tonnes of properties here in Yorkshire. From
07:56 Nostal Priory to Fountains Abbey, there are so many places to go and explore, and you
08:02 get free parking with a membership too. Then on to O for Otley. Yes, I know Otley for having
08:11 the 20p shop, one of the cheapest shops in the world where yes, everything is actually
08:16 20p. But it's not just known for that. It is a historic market town and it used to have
08:23 the most pubs in a small market town. And you may have even heard of the Otley Run as
08:30 well because the tradition of that was that people who'd been selling at the market, the
08:35 farmers would then on their way back home, they would stop at all the pubs along the
08:40 way along Leeds Road. And this has become the Otley Run, which is a famous pub crawl,
08:45 especially amongst students in fancy dress. Which brings us on to pubs. Yes, not only
08:52 do we like our grub, but we love our pubs, the heart of the community, the public houses
08:58 here in Yorkshire. There are tons of pubs and places to go for your favourite Sunday
09:04 dinner, that perfect pint, ale houses and tons of micro breweries too. Pubs aren't just
09:11 an old thing. Yes, they are cemented in the foundation of many communities, but there's
09:17 more and more pubs now. And sadly, a lot of the older ones are closing, which is why a
09:22 lot of locals have come and rallied around for support when it comes to the pubs.
09:28 Then Q for quarries. Now, at first glance, quarries might not seem the most impressive
09:34 idea for a bit of recognition, but actually we've got the old quarry playground in Nottingley.
09:42 We've got tons of playgrounds, Pittsmoor Adventure Playground, where quarries have become a real
09:47 place of recreation. You've even got the old quarry in Hawbury, which is a pub there. There's
09:54 tons of bits of Yorkshire history found within these recreational places. And of course,
10:01 that's not forgetting the National Coal Mining Museum in Overton, which is just outside Wakefield.
10:07 R is for ruins. Yes, we are not just ruined after a night out on the Otley Run in Yorkshire.
10:14 We have tons of ruins from Sandal Castle to Pontefract Castle to Manor Castle. We've got
10:19 Kirkstall Abbey. There are so many places that may sound like they're ruined, but they're
10:25 actually the start of history here in Yorkshire. From the grand old Duke of York, nursery round,
10:31 marching up Sandal Castle turrets, to Manor Castle, which we have to come back to staycations
10:38 here in Yorkshire because we've got some of the best seaside resorts, Scarborough, Whitby.
10:45 There are so many places to go on a staycation and even the towns and cities. Not forgetting
10:50 York, one of the favourite places to go to for many visitors, not just Harry Potter fans
10:56 either. People who want to have a bit of that Viking history relived in the home of York.
11:04 Yes, York is a great place to go on a staycation. And then that brings us on to tea. Yes, we
11:12 wouldn't be Yorkshire without a good cup of tea. Anything is wrong, out is wrong, put
11:17 the kettle on and it'll be right. Yes, we love our brew and of course, we're home of
11:23 Yorkshire tea, one of the most famous brands of tea, but we also have tons of independent
11:29 outlets creating teas and selling them worldwide. So it's really great to try and find those
11:36 independent tea houses. Coffee, move over, tea is back on the menu as UK's most popular
11:43 drink, although coffee did take over recently apparently, but not here in Yorkshire. U is
11:48 for unusual. Yes, there are tons of unusual people, places, weird and wonderful things
11:56 to do, not just swinging through the treetops of Go Ape or different places, mission out
12:02 in Yorkshire. There are lots of places to have that unusual experience because we are
12:09 a bit quirky here in Yorkshire. V is for vegan. There are lots of food halls here in Yorkshire
12:17 from street food markets, such as Peddler in Sheffield, which is also in Wakefield now,
12:23 as well as independent street food markets. And of course, Moulton is the self-dubbed
12:29 food capital of Yorkshire with a food market all year round. Vegan food is extremely popular
12:37 too. There are tons of vegan restaurants as well as places with great vegan menus. And
12:44 of course, Veganuary shines a light on all of these. We've of course got the Bosch boys
12:50 here as well. Well, they come from Sheffield anyway. They've got lots of fabulous vegan
12:54 cookbooks as well as being really well known online. And their new cookbook is actually
13:00 called Meat because it's actually about creating your own vegan meat. That brings me on to
13:07 W for Whitby. I'm sorry, we have to go to Whitby again, not just for the jet, but it
13:13 is one of the most amazing places, the home of Dracula. Although as they say at St. Mary's
13:19 Church, don't keep asking us for Dracula's grave. He is not real. So just those who really,
13:26 really believe in him, they don't have a grave there. They're just known for it. And of course,
13:32 Whitby is known for its fish and chips, its arcade, and it's a stunning place for visitors
13:39 to go. X is for Xscape. I won't lie, we struggled on the X for our alphabet. But not only are
13:48 we home of one of the youngest professional xylophone players in Leeds, who I think she
13:53 started when she was three playing the xylophone, and she can now do a full on Beethoven track.
13:59 But of course, Xscape near Pontefract, Castleford and Wakefield. It's a multi-purpose entertainment
14:06 venue with gravity go-karting, trampolining, ten pin bowling, food outlets galore. You
14:13 can even go tobogganing there. And of course, across the road is Junction 32. Well, why?
14:21 Why has to be for us Yorkshire folk? Because there's nowt as queer as folk, especially
14:26 here in Yorkshire. Yes, we are weird and wonderful and fabulous. It's Jane MacDonald, the cruise
14:33 ship singer who's helped put us on the map, especially here in Wakefield where I live.
14:37 But there's also Arctic monkeys, lots of celebrities, Sheffield's Jarvis Cocker. Putting Yorkshire
14:44 on the map, we are known for some of the greatest of all here in Yorkshire.
14:51 Yes, we are on to our last letter, Z. Z is for zoos. So we're talking here about wildlife
14:59 parks, such as Yorkshire Wildlife Park, small zoos and animal parks, such as Ponderosa Zoo
15:06 or the farmyard area at Wentworth Garden Centre. There are so many zoos and places to go here
15:14 in Yorkshire to get that animal vibe and also not forgetting places that really nurture
15:20 and look after the animals, such as Yorkshire Wildlife Park. You've got Tropical World and
15:26 there's obviously the Sea Life Centres in Hull and Scarborough.
15:30 So that's it for our A to Z of Yorkshire. If you think anything should be changed or
15:35 added, let us know because we'd love to do this again. Don't forget to follow us at Yorkshire
15:41 Post and myself at Sophie Merlan.
