A travel expert said the Japan airlines aircraft which collided with a smaller Coast Guard plane on a runway had the "latest generation safety features onboard." All 379 people on board the Japan Airlines plane miraculously escaped as it was engulfed by a massive fire upon landing at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday evening.
The crash killed five out of six of the Coast Guard crew on the plane, which was involved in delivering aid to earthquake victims in north-central Japan, prime minister Fumio Kishida said during a news conference. Travel expert Sally Gethin said a thorough investigation is underway to determine what went wrong. Report by Kennedyl. 00:00 The A350, which is the Japan Airlines aircraft, this is the first time there's been a hull loss of an A350,
00:09 as far as I'm aware, of that aircraft type.
00:12 Now it's a fairly new aircraft, it's really entered service with airlines around the world in the last several years,
00:21 so it's actually got the latest generation safety features on board,
00:26 and one of the key components of that is literally the materials that make up the fuselage.
00:33 So it's made up of carbon fibre and a lot of composite materials,
00:38 which are actually manufactured and developed purely to create an enhanced safety in the event of fire,
00:49 or even worse, an explosion on board.
00:53 There will be a rigorous scrutiny of what went wrong,
00:57 and let's not forget that Japan is a very mature, developed, robust aviation industry.
01:04 It always has been, actually, and they will be very, very keen to make sure that everything is completely, thoroughly investigated.
