00:04 All right, Josh Smith here.
00:06 Today I want to talk a little bit about a tune called
00:08 "Triple J Hoedown."
00:10 This is a song that originally appeared on my Inception album,
00:13 but we're going to talk about the live version that's
00:15 on my most recent album, "Live at the Spud,"
00:17 recorded at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles, California.
00:20 "Triple J" is slightly a bit of an opus.
00:24 I wrote this tune when I was 17, and it
00:26 has lots of twists and turns.
00:29 I wanted a tune that kind of went through a lot of variations
00:32 and had a lot of stuff in it.
00:33 But at its heart, it's kind of a bluegrass rock fusion tune,
00:39 where I'm doing a lot of hybrid picking.
00:42 It's in the key of G, and it starts like this.
00:45 [MUSIC - "TRIPLE J HOEDOWN"]
00:48 [BASS PLAYING]
00:52 So that's a lick where the bass is pedaling G,
01:04 and we're walking down from D to C to B to B flat over G.
01:12 And I'm hybrid picking all of that.
01:13 [BASS PLAYING]
01:17 And then we go into this phrase.
01:19 [BASS PLAYING]
01:22 So that's--
01:31 [BASS PLAYING]
01:35 But I'm playing it hybrid picking.
01:41 [BASS PLAYING]
01:46 So that's kind of the second phrase of the song.
01:48 And here's the third, which is basically the melody.
01:51 [BASS PLAYING]
02:14 So that's going from G to E minor, the one to the six.
02:17 So--
02:17 [BASS PLAYING]
02:21 So then it goes--
02:35 we'll walk up, a chromatic walk up, kind of a Beatles-y thing
02:38 from C.
02:38 [BASS PLAYING]
02:42 [BASS PLAYING]
02:45 So that's the main bulk of the song, the beginning,
03:01 before we get into the first variation.
03:06 Coming up is a big unison lick, and then we
03:08 go into the next B section of the song.
03:11 But that's the bulk of the intro.
03:15 [BASS PLAYING]
03:18 (upbeat music)
