00:38 Hello, good morning!
00:40 Chilly Paige, I'm the spokesperson
00:42 for today, so we're the Pink Zippers
00:44 and we come down every Sunday
00:46 but today we're staying in about 10 minutes I think
00:48 about 10 minutes to celebrate the new year coming in
00:50 and what a way to celebrate with our
00:52 babies after all!
00:54 Hi, can you introduce yourself?
00:56 Hi, yes, so I'm Pam, I've been volunteer
00:58 with Gafford now for quite a few years
01:00 so this is our annual
01:02 New Year's Day swim
01:04 as you can see we've still got people in the water
01:06 20 plus minutes in
01:08 so I've been in providing safety
01:10 cover along with our cadets section
01:12 as you can see they're on the board still
01:14 so Gafford is an
01:16 independent lifeboat station covering
01:18 Stoke's Bay, Portsmouth Harbour area
01:20 we rely solely on
01:22 donations so this
01:24 annual swim gives us a great chance
01:26 to raise our profile and get
01:28 much needed funds and
01:30 it's a good way to start the new year if you like
01:32 being cold. Tell me
01:34 why it's so popular?
01:36 It's grown in popularity, I think
01:38 we've had a lot of cold water swimming
01:40 and it just seems
01:42 that everyone likes to start the new year in the sea
01:44 Tell me
01:46 obviously the safety
01:48 measures around today, it's not
01:50 just for fun but we obviously need to have the safety
01:52 measures so tell me what you have to put in place
01:54 So there's a lot in place
01:56 so again, obviously we've got
01:58 a massive team here today so I play a part
02:00 of that, so I
02:02 hold our LSF UK qualifications
02:04 to sort of
02:06 provide safety cover here
02:08 and then obviously we've got our boat on
02:10 the water so yeah, so it's just
02:12 a whole range of safety cover
02:14 with qualified people and
02:16 yeah. Tell me
02:18 some of your top tips for being safe in the water
02:20 Top tips, float
02:22 like a starfish if you're in trouble
02:24 don't go to the beach alone, go
02:26 with a friend, let somebody know where you're going
02:28 if you can, use a
02:30 float device if you're swimming
02:32 generally just make sure you've got
02:34 the right clothing, you've possibly checked the tides
02:36 things like that
02:38 yeah, just basically don't go
02:40 alone and don't swim after
02:42 alcohol or
02:44 food
