Transcript
00:00 It seems as if Robert Lewandowski is not the only star in Poland right now.
00:06 Iga Świątek, the 20-year-old tennis prodigy, is making a name for herself, all the while
00:13 making her country proud.
00:16 With a career highest ranking of number 4 and by winning the French Open at such a young
00:21 age, she has been progressing and improving with each passing day.
00:27 Welcome to the Rich Rabbit and today we will be talking about Iga Świątek.
00:33 But first things first, if you haven't yet subscribed to our channel, please do consider
00:37 doing it and don't forget to click the bell icon.
00:41 At her age, nobody expects Iga would cement her image in women's tennis and get a spot
00:48 on the WTA rankings.
00:50 What makes it more interesting is the caliber of opponents she encountered on her way to
00:55 the top winning the 2020 French Open and how she became the first tennis player from her
01:01 country Poland to achieve a Grand Slam single success in history.
01:08 The Polish tennis player has indeed shown that age is just a number and not a factor
01:14 for determining how successful one becomes in a chosen endeavor.
01:21 Growing up in a family that is associated with sports certainly influenced her decision
01:27 to pursue a career in tennis.
01:30 She is still in her prime so expect more from her in the coming years.
01:36 On the 31st of May 2001, Iga Natalia Świątek was born to her parents, Dorota and Tomasz
01:44 Świątek in Warsaw or Warszawa in Polish.
01:49 Her father is a former rower who competed in the men's quadruple skulls event at the
01:54 1988 Seoul Olympics.
01:56 Świątek's father wanted his daughters to become competitive athletes.
02:01 Interestingly, he preferred their take up an individual sport rather than a team sport
02:07 to have better control of their chances of success.
02:11 Her sister Agata initially started out as a swimmer but switched to tennis after she
02:16 had issues with swimming.
02:19 Iga followed her into tennis because she wanted to beat her and also because she wanted to
02:25 be more like her.
02:27 Agata briefly competed on the ATF junior circuit in 2013 at about 15 but stopped playing due
02:35 to injury troubles.
02:37 Iga trained at Mera Warsaw as a 14-year-old before later moving to Legia Warsaw.
02:45 She began competing on the ITF women's circuit in 2016 and played on the circuit till the
02:51 end of 2018.
02:53 Iga won all seven ITF singles finals she reached, ranging from the first four at the $10,000
03:00 to $15,000 level to one at the $25,000, followed up by two at the $60,000 level.
03:08 Her first three titles came at 15 years old.
03:12 The fourth was in February 2018 in her first tournament back from a seven-month layoff
03:18 due to injury.
03:20 After a $25,000 title in April, Svantek moved up to higher-level ITF events later that month.
03:28 Following her junior Wimbledon title in July, she skipped the junior US Open to stay in
03:34 Europe.
03:35 During the two weeks of the US Open, she won back-to-back 60K titles at the NEK Ladies
03:43 Open in Hungary and the Montreal Ladies Open in Switzerland.
03:49 Iga made her first WTA breakthrough at the Ladies Open Lugano in April.
03:55 With her first direct acceptance into a main draw, she made her first WTA final.
04:02 During the event, she upset No. 3 seed Viktoria Kuzmova in the second round for her first
04:08 top-50 victory.
04:12 She ultimately finished runner-up to Polona Hrdzog in three sets.
04:18 Iga closed out her clay court season with a fourth-round appearance at the French Open
04:23 in her second major.
04:26 She upset No. 16 Wang Qiang in the second round for her first top-20 victory, before
04:33 losing to defending champion Simona Halep.
04:37 Iga could not repeat her French Open success at the remaining Grand Slam events of the
04:42 year, losing her opening match at Wimbledon and in the second round at the US Open.
04:49 Her best result in the second half of the season was a third-round appearance at the
04:54 Canadian Open.
04:56 During the event, she upset No. 18 Caroline Wozniacki before losing to No. 2 Naomi Osaka.
05:05 With this result, she entered the top 50 for the first time a week later.
05:12 Svantec made her return to the WTA Tour at the Australian Open.
05:17 She matched her best result at a Grand Slam tournament with another fourth-round appearance.
05:23 This time, highlighted by a victory over No. 20 Donna Vykic.
05:30 She defeated Vykic again at the Qatar Open, her last match win before the WTA Tour was
05:36 shut down for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
05:41 Svantec continued her Grand Slam success once the Tour resumed.

06:14 opening round.
06:16 Her biggest upset was a victory in the fourth round over top seed and World No. 2 Simona
06:21 Halep, who was on a 17-match win streak and a heavy favorite to win the title.
06:29 She only lost three games against her, after winning just one game against a Romanian in
06:35 the same round of the French Open the previous year.
06:39 Eager defeated Sofia Kanin in the final to become the first Polish player to win a Grand
06:44 Slam singles title ever, and the lowest-ranked French Open champion in the history of the
06:51 WTA rankings.
06:54 She also became the youngest singles champion at the tournament since Rafael Nadal in 2005
07:00 and the youngest women's singles winner since Monica Salas in 1992.
07:07 She won the title without dropping a set or more than five games to any opponent.
07:14 And the 28 games she lost in total were tied for the second-fewest among French Open singles
07:20 champions in the Open era, behind only the 20 games Steffi Graf lost in 1988.
07:29 With the title, Eager rose to No. 17 in the world.
07:33 She also played the doubles event, partnering with Nicole Melishar for the first time.
