Transcript
00:00 Winning the jackpots might be just the desire that everyone has.
00:04 Most of us have a bucket list of what we would do and what we would spend our winnings on.
00:09 Does everyone know what he or she would do if they ever won the lottery ticket exactly?
00:14 You'd be amazed at the great number of people who get it all wrong, despite having it all
00:18 planned out in their heads.
00:20 The following 10 people really went all wrong with it, and hence they are featured in our
00:25 list for the top 10 stupid lottery winners.
00:28 So without further ado, let's get into it!
00:32 10.
00:33 Christina Goodenow Christina Goodenow purchased a lottery ticket
00:36 on October 9, 2005.
00:39 Eventually, luck went well for her and she won the lottery of $1 million.
00:44 $1 million is a lot of money to change up life.
00:48 Goodenow chose the annual payment method and even received her first sum of payment of
00:53 $33,500.
00:54 But see, Christina Goodenow used her boyfriend's late mother's credit card to buy the lottery
01:00 ticket, which we all know is a crime.
01:04 Soon after, detectives smelled that there was something fishy.
01:07 Eventually, Christina Goodenow didn't get another payment because investigators caught
01:12 up with her crime.
01:14 After a thorough investigation, Christina was put in the Jackson County Jail on charges
01:18 of theft, forgery, identity theft, credit card fraud, computer crime, and parole violation.
01:25 9.
01:26 Jose Antonio Cuauhtoc Jose Antonio was not a legal migrant living
01:32 in Georgia when he won a $750,000 lottery ticket.
01:37 Because he was not a legal resident of Georgia, he asked his boss, Eric Cervantes, to cash
01:41 the ticket for him.
01:43 However, the business owner kept the money for himself, claiming that he gave Jose Antonio
01:48 money to buy the lottery ticket for him.
01:51 But the story doesn't end there.
01:53 After suing Eric Cervantes for $750,000 back, he faced deportation after his undocumented
02:00 status was unveiled.
02:02 He definitely made a huge mistake.
02:04 Perhaps it's better to only play the lottery in a country where one resides legally.
02:09 8.
02:10 Sharon Tirabasi Sharon Tirabasi is a Canadian woman who rose
02:15 to stardom when she won an incredible jackpot of a whopping $10.5 million.
02:21 She could have kept hold of all of it, as prize winners do not need to declare lottery
02:26 winnings as their income and funds are not subject to a lottery tax in Canada.
02:30 Tirabasi was very bountiful with her bang of luck and shared the money with her friends
02:35 and family.
02:36 Her first action with the jackpot was to split it amongst family, one million to her parents
02:41 and the other $1.75 million to her siblings.
02:45 As is often the case with jackpot winners, Tirabasi was suddenly approached by many friends
02:50 new and old when news of her winning the lottery spread far and wide.
02:54 She helped friends by paying their rents, loaned cash to a friend whose husband was
02:59 in jail, and even provided some friends funds to start a business.
03:03 Unfortunately, these friends were never heard from again and many loans were never repaid.
03:08 Too soon, all her cash was depleted and she is now working part-time to help her family
03:13 and is living in a rented home with her six children.
03:17 7 - Alec Ashoka Alec Ashoka won approximately $500,000 and
03:24 he used most of that amount to fund social work, which was to help reintegrate sexually
03:28 molested victims back into society.
03:31 Everything was good for a few years.
03:33 The NGO was very active and people were aided.
03:36 Not long after that, the word was out that Alec himself was a sexual offender and was
03:41 caught on two separate occasions.
03:43 Shortly after the word was out in public, few men publicly attacked Alec, causing severe
03:48 wounds by hitting him on his head and shoulders with an iron rock.
03:52 He had already completed time in jail for his past crimes, but nobody knows why he wanted
03:58 to get the public's attention by funding an NGO that serves the purpose of healing
04:02 the victims of his crimes.
04:05 6 - Willie Hurt In 1989, Willie Hurt won a staggering amount
04:10 of $3.1 million in the Michigan lottery.
04:14 But rather than use this amount to advance his life, he did the opposite.
04:18 Within two years, he was in the middle of his divorce, which took a chunk of his money,
04:22 lost custody of his children, and had already started the use of cocaine.
04:26 Later on, he was also charged with the murder of his girlfriend.
04:30 According to the Associated Press, authorities have accused Hurt of fatally shooting a 30-year-old
04:34 woman in the head after an argument about not having crack cocaine to consume.
04:40 5 - Eby Roncaioli There are many stories about lottery winners
04:45 whose lives take a turn for the worse, especially after winning big.
04:49 Eby Roncaioli was born in Hungary and moved to Canada where she married Dr. Joseph Roncaioli
04:54 for 30 years.
04:56 After winning $5 million, she spent her money lavishly, buying her son a house, going to
05:01 gambling casinos, and giving another son $2 million from a previous marriage.
05:06 After carelessly spending her winnings, Eby was found dead on the couch in her husband's
05:10 mansion in July 2003.
05:12 It was initially thought that she had died because of natural reasons, but an autopsy
05:16 found a toxic level of painkillers and alcohol in her body.
05:20 Finally, upon being questioned, her husband, Joseph, admitted that he injected his wife
05:25 with painkillers.
05:27 What bad luck she had!
05:29 4 - Denise Rossi After winning $1.3 million in the California
05:34 lottery, Rossi filed a divorce from her husband, Thomas Rossi, without telling him a reason.
05:39 Eleven days later, that left him understandably perplexed for lack of disclosure.
05:44 It was an effort to keep all the cash to herself, but after he found out Rossi's winnings,
05:49 Thomas sued Rossi because she violated the state assist disclosure law.
05:53 Later on, Thomas was awarded every single cent of the $1.3 million jackpot which left
05:59 Denise destitute and single.
06:01 When we see selfish behavior like this, it can be hard not to laugh!
06:06 3 - Americo Lopez A group of co-workers pooled their money and
06:11 one of them, Americo Lopez, bought the tickets.
06:14 After they won a staggering amount of $38.5 million in the lottery in 2009, he cashed
06:20 the ticket, kept it for himself, and quit his job.
06:23 Later, the co-workers investigated and found out the truth and took Americo Lopez to court
06:29 and ordered him to split the money between himself and his five co-workers.
06:33 The court eventually awarded Lopez's five co-workers $4 million each.
06:38 2 - Michael Carroll Michael Carroll is a well-documented lottery
06:42 prize winner who won £9.7 million in 2002 while he was only 19.
06:49 Carroll didn't have any nice ideas when it comes to spending the money and investing
06:53 his money.
06:54 He blew most of it consuming cocaine.
06:57 To portray his rich man status, Carroll snorted the cocaine using a solid gold pen.
07:02 He had enjoyed celebrity status for a time in British tabloid media and he was referred
07:07 to as "Lotto Laut."
07:09 It was apparent that the money would be ending shortly or briefly.
07:13 Apart from acquiring a mansion, Carroll was known for a couple of other extravagant purchases
07:17 and eventually by 2012, Michael had led himself to lose all of the millions.
07:24 1 - Evelyn Marie Adams Evelyn Marie Adams is an American prize winner.
07:30 She won the New Jersey lottery ticket twice, in 1985 and in 1986, for over 5.4 million
07:38 compounds.
07:39 Both lotteries were paid in the form of mandatory entitlements.
07:42 However, she was an addictive gambler and lost large sums of her winnings at Atlantic
07:47 City casinos and threw out a string of unsuccessful business deals.
07:52 After achieving her first prize, Adams paid back bills and set up a fund to pay for her
07:56 daughter's college, bought a new car and gave presents to those close to her, having
08:01 to raise her weekly ticket purchases from $25 per week to $100 weekly.
08:06 She later postponed plans to use her winnings to study music and eventually opened a music
08:11 store instead of buying and later selling the convenience store where she had worked.
08:16 After wasting significant portions of her winnings in unsuccessful ventures and gambling,
08:21 she eventually got bankrupted and started living in a trailer park.
08:25 With that being said, here we come to the end of our video.
