00:09 racing.
00:10 He has held the world records for most wins and most championship points in F1 and the
00:16 record for most wins in 2002.
00:19 Arguably the second greatest F1 driver in history.
00:26 Welcome to the Rich Rabbit and today we will be talking about the life story of the one
00:31 and only Michael Schumacher.
00:34 But first things first, if you haven't yet subscribed to our channel, please do consider

00:44 Schumacher was born on January 3, 1969 in the town of Hürth, North Rhine-Westphalia,
00:51 Germany to Rolf, a construction worker, and Elisabeth.
00:57 When he was young, he showed interest in racing, and his parents encouraged him by building
01:02 him his own car.
01:05 Both his parents worked hard so that they could support their son in fulfilling his
01:10 dreams.
01:11 In 1982, a young Schumacher won the German Junior Car Championship.
01:17 The following year, he was given his driving license at the tender age of 14.
01:25 He then went on to win several car championships.
01:29 He also worked as a mechanic to support himself.
01:35 The enthusiastic racer participated in entry-level championships such as the Formula Koenig and
01:41 Formula Ford in 1988, earning an emphatic win in Formula Koenig.
01:48 His younger brother Ralf and stepbrother Sebastian are also Formula One racers.
01:54 Michael and Ralf would go on to become the first siblings to finish first and second
01:59 in the same race.
02:01 In 1990, Michael competed in the Formula 3 Championship of Germany for the WTS team.
02:10 The same year, he competed in the World Sports Prototype Championship as part of the Mercedes
02:15 Junior Racing Program.
02:18 He did that along with racers like Carl Wendlinger and Heinz-Harald Frenzen.
02:25 Schumacher drove the sober Mercedes C11 car and placed first in the final race at Autodromo
02:32 Hermanos Rodriguez.
02:34 He finished fifth in the tournament despite participating in only three out of the nine
02:39 races.
02:41 In 1991, he took part in the World Sports Car Championship and emerged victorious driving
02:47 a sober Mercedes-Benz C291.
02:53 The same year, he also participated in the Japanese Formula 3000 Championship and placed
02:59 second.
03:03 In 1991, the young driver competed in a Formula One race for the Jordan Grand Prix team and
03:09 finished seventh.
03:11 The same year, he placed fifth in the Italian Grand Prix, defeating Nelson Piquet.
03:17 In 1992, he participated in the Mexican Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix, finishing
03:23 third and first respectively.
03:26 He also competed in a Formula One race for the Benetton Ford team, scoring a total of
03:31 53 points.
03:33 The next year, he won a race at the Portuguese Grand Prix but lost most of the other races.
03:39 In 1994, Michael competed in the Formula One Championship, participating in 16 races and
03:46 winning nine.
03:49 The same year, at the Australian Grand Prix, the racer was involved in an accident with
03:54 British racer Damon Hill.
03:57 Subsequently, the English media blamed Schumacher for the incident.
04:01 In 1995, he won the Formula One Championship for team Benetton, once again winning nine
04:07 races like the previous season.
04:10 The following year, Schumacher left Benetton to sign a contract with Ferrari and remained
04:16 with the latter for ten years.
04:20 He won the championship for the team on five occasions and was offered a remuneration of
04:25 $60 million.
04:30 In 1996, he finished the competition with 59 points.
04:35 He scored 78, 86 and 44 points respectively in the next three years.
04:42 The year 2000 saw Michael begin his successful journey, as he earned 108 points in the Formula
04:49 One Championship.
04:51 He won the race that year and went on to earn a victory on each occasion for the next four
04:56 years, with 123, 144, 93 and 148 points respectively.
05:05 In the 2005 F1 Championship, the rules were changed, with drivers allowed to use only
05:12 one set of tyres for the entire race.
05:16 The Ferrari team used Bridgestone tyres that required frequent replacing.
05:21 When the rules were changed, teams using Michelin tyres won most of the races, while the six
05:27 drivers using Bridgestone tyres had to drop out.
05:32 The only competition that Schumacher won in the 2005 season was the United States Grand
05:38 Prix, where he finished third, scoring a total of 62 points.
05:43 The following year, he struggled to win at the Monaco Grand Prix, where he finished fifth.
05:48 He also took part in the Grand Prix held at Canada, Italy and China.
05:54 Following the 2006 Formula One season, he retired for a period of four years.
06:00 During this period, Michael acted as an advisor to the Ferrari team and assisted the CEO of
06:07 Ferrari, Jean Todd.
06:09 He was also appointed as a substitute for the injured racer Massa.
06:15 However, Schumacher had to pull out at the last moment owing to a neck injury.
06:21 The spot was filled by Italian racers Luca Baddour and Giancarlo Fisichella.
06:27 In 2010, Michael made a comeback, this time racing for the Mercedes team with German racer
06:34 Nico Rosberg.
06:38 But because of a major accident in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he finished ninth in the championship,
06:44 scoring just 72 points.
06:45 In the next two years, he did not fare well in the F1 championships, finishing eighth
06:51 and thirteenth respectively.
06:54 In 2012, he announced his decision to retire once again, after the Brazilian Grand Prix.
07:01 That's quite a stellar career, but now let's talk about the awards and achievements, shall
07:06 we?
07:08 In April 2002, he was named a UNESCO champion for strongly advocating education for children.
07:17 He shares this honor with footballer Pallet, gymnast Sergi Babka and tennis player Justine
07:23 Hennen.
07:24 In 2002 and 2004, Michael was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
07:31 He has been nominated for the award six times, sharing the honor with the tennis legend Roger
07:36 Federer.
07:37 In 2006, he was felicitated with the FIA Gold Medal for Motorsport to commemorate his success.
07:47 The following year, he won the Prince of Asturias Award for Sport for his racing career as well
07:53 as his philanthropic contributions.
07:56 In 2010, the French government honored this brilliant racer with the Legion of Honor Award,
08:02 the highest of its kind in France.
08:06 In 2014, the Millennium Trophy was conferred upon the celebrated racer at the Bambi Awards.
08:12 Schumacher got married to Karina Betsch in August 1995.
08:16 The couple has a daughter named Gina Marie and a son named Mick.
08:23 Mick is also a race car driver affiliated to the Ferrari Driver Academy and now participates
08:29 in F1, representing Haas' F1 team.
08:33 In the cruelest of ironies, after surviving so many seasons in his dangerous profession,
08:39 Schumacher's first year in permanent retirement ended with him suffering a very serious head
08:45 injury.
08:46 It happened when he fell while on a family skiing holiday.
08:51 Following the accident that left him in a coma for several months, his family brought
08:55 him home, where he faced a lengthy rehabilitation period.
09:00 The need for speed was always there, however, he replaced competing with sports such as
09:06 horse riding and motorcycling.
09:08 Ironically, at the time of the skiing accident that posed the greatest challenge of his life,
09:14 he was only traveling 10 miles per hour.
09:18 If the power of public opinion could help his recovery, it came in the form of a tremendous
09:24 outpouring of messages of hope, support and encouragement for the sport's most successful
09:29 driver.
09:31 The former Formula One driver loves football, regularly attending football matches organized
09:37 for charity.
09:38 He is an ardent follower of the matches played by football teams such as Newcastle United
09:43 and the German team Cologne.
09:47 Michael is also known for his contributions to charitable causes like education for children
09:53 and the development of poverty-stricken areas.
09:56 He has helped UNESCO by donating 1.5 million euros.
10:02 He has also donated money to many philanthropic organizations, including Palace for the Poor
10:08 in Peru.
10:09 He donated 10 million dollars to help rebuild after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
10:16 Michael Schumacher took the sport of F1 to another era.
10:20 He set the bar very high, but fortunately he also made ways for people like Lewis Hamilton
10:26 who went on to break his records.
