Finding 3 Of Montreal’s Massive ‘’Sleeping Giants’' | Hidden Montreal

00:00 Today we're on the hunt for Montreal's sleeping giants.
00:05 Walking through Montreal you're bound to come across a lot of street art.
00:18 From tiny pieces like this one that go way under people's radar,
00:21 hidden behind buildings,
00:23 to massive murals that make you feel really small.
00:26 There's something just about everywhere here.
00:29 But today, we're looking for something a bit bigger.
00:33 Spread across the city at this very moment
00:36 are pieces of art called the sleeping giants.
00:39 And they're called the sleeping giants because these things are huge.
00:43 Sometimes as big as the size of a city block.
00:46 So if these pieces really are that big, where are they?
00:50 And why have so few people actually seen them?
00:53 Ella and Peter are a duo from France
00:55 and they're the talent behind the sleeping giants.
00:58 They've hidden their art all over the world.
01:01 The only catch though, they don't tell anyone where they are.
01:04 Seriously, there are entire forums of people trying to figure out
01:07 the locations of some of these pieces.
01:09 But with a lot of research and a little bit of help,
01:12 I managed to track down one of these sleeping giants to here, in Hoxhalaga.
01:16 The thing is, I just have to find the place.
01:19 Now the artists went through a lot of trouble to hide these pieces.
01:23 So I'm going to do them a solid and keep it a secret.
01:26 But I will tell you this, the piece we're going to today
01:29 is not far off from the Olympic Stadium.
01:32 Alright, so I'm here. At least I think I am.
01:35 See, I tracked down the sleeping giant to this white building in Hoxhalaga.
01:39 But on the surface it doesn't really look like anything special at all.
01:43 The only way to know for sure if there is a sleeping giant here
01:46 is to go to the very top of the roof and check for ourselves.
01:49 It's time to go high.
01:51 Higher.
01:53 Higher.
01:55 There it is.
01:57 Whoa, that is huge.
02:00 Oh my god, it's so much bigger than I expected it to be.
02:05 I'd never think for a second that something this big
02:13 was just above me the whole time.
02:16 Okay, hold up.
02:18 It looks like there's two more sleeping giants just a couple blocks from here.
02:21 Let's go.
02:23 Should be around here somewhere.
02:26 Not the easiest things to find.
02:29 And again, it's really hard to make out anything on the rooftops from the ground.
02:32 But this is the direction we're supposed to be moving in.
02:35 I think this is it.
02:37 Should be around here somewhere.
02:39 Here.
02:41 Absolutely wild.
02:44 In case you can't tell, this one measures in at over 6,500 square feet.
02:51 Ella and Peter are famous for these huge murals
02:55 and they've secretly left their mark everywhere from Chile to Norway.
02:59 So this is a really special view that we're getting.
03:03 What we do know is the old woman giant and the giant in the red dress
03:09 were gifts from the artists from their visit to Montreal
03:13 during the 2016 Under Pressure Graffiti Festival.
03:17 [music]
03:20 There really isn't anything else like this in Montreal.
03:32 Art like this is easy to spot in a city,
03:35 but art like the sleeping giants is a little bit harder.
03:38 Even though it's hiding in plain sight, you just have to know where to look.
03:41 Alright, that's it for this episode, but I will see you next time
03:44 for another hidden place in Montreal that you're going to want to know about.
03:47 Take care.
