00:20 >> Next year, I think we're almost 20 years since
00:24 President Kagame wrote me the famous letter that started our friendship.
00:31 The friendship that I've had with your president is very unusual to have
00:37 a president of a nation and a pastor in another nation to be such close friends.
00:42 And partners and for 20 years gone through ups and downs and highs and lows.
00:47 And he's defended me and I've defended him and we've just been very,
00:52 it's a very unusual relationship, okay?
00:56 Very unusual relationship.
00:58 When I got here, the first people I wanted to see were the first
01:03 lady's grandchildren, because I feel like they're my grandchildren too.
01:08 And so when I saw the girls, I had brought from Disneyland,
01:14 two little ukuleles, one says Mickey Mouse and one says Minnie Mouse.
01:18 And I had them for both of the girls to unwrap.
01:21 And I said, in a year or two, I'll teach you how to play them.
01:24 Right now you just bang on them.
01:25 [LAUGH] But I was so glad to see most of you or
01:30 some of you know that in Anjan Bertrand's wedding, I had a part in that wedding.
01:35 And they had asked me to be a part of that wedding and
01:37 it was my honor to be there with actually Cardinal Kambanda, who's a dear friend.
01:42 And while COVID was going on,
01:44 Archbishop Kambanda became Cardinal Kambanda, and that was a big thing.
01:51 But we are so happy to be back.
01:54 [MUSIC]
02:02 Let me just say a couple things up front.
02:04 When God asks you a question, he asked Moses, Moses, what's in your hand?
02:09 If God ever asked you a question, he already knows the answer.
02:12 God never asked the question, he doesn't know the answer to already.
02:17 He knew the answer, he wanted Moses to know what was in his hand.
02:21 He says, follow me on this, he wanted Moses.
02:24 Anytime God asks you a question, he already knows the answer.
02:29 Second thing I wanna say about this is anytime God does a miracle,
02:34 he wants to teach you a truth.
02:35 God never does a miracle just to show off.
02:40 Just go, hey, watch this.
02:41 I learned this at the magic castle.
02:43 It'll really surprise people.
02:45 Throw your staff down and it'll become a snake.
02:46 Pick it up, it'll become a stick.
02:48 He wasn't doing, God never does a miracle to show off.
02:51 Every miracle is a parable, and every parable is a miracle.
02:56 Every miracle is a parable of divine truth, and
02:59 every parable is a miracle of divine truth.
03:02 So he's saying, I know the answer to the question, and
03:06 I want you to see this miracle, I'm not trying to show off.
03:09 Now the key to understanding this question, what's in your hand?
03:13 And I'm gonna apply it to your life, what's in your hand?
03:17 Cuz God is asking you that question in 2023.
03:21 When he asked this question,
03:26 you have to understand the key to the symbol of the staff.
03:29 A symbol, Moses' staff, represented three things in his life.
03:35 It represented his identity, his income, and his influence.
03:42 Let me explain.
03:44 First, the staff represents Moses' identity because he is a shepherd.
03:50 Every profession has its symbol.
03:52 For instance, if I walked in here with a stethoscope around my neck,
03:56 you'd know, Rick's a doctor.
03:58 Now I have a doctor's degree, but it's not in medicine, it's in theology.
04:02 But you would say, Rick's a doctor, he's wearing a stethoscope.
04:05 If I walked in here with a utility belt, with a hammer and
04:09 other tools, you'd think, Rick's a carpenter.
04:12 If I walked in here with a white coat on, you'd think he's a lab technician,
04:17 he's a scientist, he's a dental assistant.
04:21 There are lots of professions that wear white coats.
04:24 The symbol of a shepherd is a shepherd's staff.
04:29 So it represents who he is, his identity.
04:33 Moses is a shepherd.
04:37 And so this is the symbol of who he is.
04:39 But it's more than that, it's also a symbol of what he owns, his income.
04:45 In these days that this happened, there were no banks.
04:49 There was no money.
04:52 All of your wealth was tied up in livestock.
04:56 So if you had a lot of sheep, a lot of cattle, and a lot of goats,
05:00 you were very wealthy.
05:01 If you had a few cattle, sheep, or goats, you were okay.
05:05 If you had no cattle, sheep, or goats, you're poor.
05:09 And so that's why in the book of Proverbs, God says,
05:12 know well the condition of your flocks.
05:15 He's saying, keep your business interest closely.
05:18 Know whether your profit and loss is working out.
05:22 Keep an eye on your business and assets.
05:25 Know the condition of your flocks.
05:27 Today he would say, know the condition of your stocks.
05:30 Because that was your income.
05:33 So Moses' staff represents his identity, who he is, and
05:37 it represents his income, what he has.

05:47 >> To our dear friend, Pastor Rick, you've been a loyal and
05:51 treasured friend over the years and stood with us through trials and
05:57 triumphs, through challenges and victories.
06:01 I am certain that you are as proud of our progress as we are.
06:06 >> [APPLAUSE]
06:12 >> Indeed, you've preached the word of
06:14 God in the most digestible, loving, non-judgmental,
06:20 and practical of ways possible.
06:22 How beneficial this humility has been in spreading the gospel.
06:30 Watching your unshakable, inexhaustible faith in the midst of storms,
06:35 your humility and compassion for humanity.
06:39 You're willing less to share a platform with the downtrodden.
06:44 And once worst offenders, now reformed of course,
06:48 are some of the reasons that, I mean,
06:52 some of the reasons I kept visiting Saddleback whenever I'd be on the West Coast.
06:59 >> [APPLAUSE]
07:02 >> And what I witnessed was real.
07:03 Ladies and gentlemen, Pastor Rick Warren is not just a man of God,
07:09 he is a man of action.
07:10 He's a man of commitment, of fairness, of empathy, of peace.
07:16 Thank you, Pastor Rick, for believing.
07:20 >> [APPLAUSE]
07:23 >> Thank you for believing in Rwanda,
07:24 even when it was unpopular to do so.
07:28 Despite the darkness that made our history,
07:32 you saw the light in our determination to overcome.
07:35 I'm certain when I say that our progress as a nation is a victory for you too.
07:42 You have loved this country so faithfully, and
07:48 be assured that this country loves you back.
07:51 >> [APPLAUSE]
07:57 >> Indeed, we may be small, but
07:59 we will always have enough space for all those who regard our home
08:04 with affection and consideration.
