00:31 I'm honored and privileged tonight
00:34 to receive the president, Ney, and to also be
00:40 honored into this position of president of Rotary Club
00:45 of Kigali.
00:46 This is an honor and also a heavy responsibility,
00:50 because this means that for the next year,
00:53 I'm going to have the responsibility to head
00:55 the club, to manage all the projects that we are going
00:58 to have.
00:59 And we have a lot of projects that we are planning to do.
01:02 We want to intervene in a lot of communities.
01:04 We've already started with a lot of projects
01:06 that we are doing, that we used to do,
01:08 and that we will continue doing in the communities,
01:12 and also new projects that we're starting now.
01:15 We have a lot of projects that we're doing also
01:17 to support people that have been affected by COVID-19.
01:21 So all of this, we will do through the Rotary
01:23 Club of Kigali.
01:25 I'm actually not the first president
01:27 to be crowned as being foreigners
01:29 and being crowned in Kigali.
01:30 But that just shows how the Rotary Club of Kigali is open.
01:35 It is open to diversity.
01:36 As long as you come with your heart
01:38 and you want to show your support,
01:41 you want to do the actions, and you want to contribute,
01:44 then you are welcome in the Rotary Club.
01:46 The Rotary Club is not about being
01:49 from one nationality or another, or from being a man or a woman.
01:54 Everyone can be a Rotarian.
01:55 And that's the beauty of Rotary.
01:57 I joined the club in 2017.
02:00 So that is three years ago.
02:02 I remember when I joined the club,
02:04 there was, I would say, a gender imbalance.
02:07 There was much more men than women.
02:09 So for the past three years, I've
02:11 been trying to recruit a lot of women to join the club.
02:14 Today, we have about 10 women out of 30 members
02:18 of the Rotary Club of Kigali.
02:20 And we really want to recruit more women to join us.
02:22 So that would be my honor.
02:24 And that would be also my focus this year,
02:27 to ensure that we get a gender balance in the Rotary
02:30 Club of Kigali.
02:31 Me as president, and also from the committee
02:33 that will support me, and also from all the commissions that
02:37 will work towards that.
02:39 We do a lot of support into health, a lot of efforts
02:44 into sanitization.
02:46 So access to water, making sure that people have the access
02:51 to the health facilities.
02:53 We build health facilities in places
02:55 where they don't have them.
02:57 We bring also medical equipment for different means.
03:02 So all of that, we do it through the Rotary.
03:04 We do it with the partnership with the Rotary International.
03:08 And we also do it with our district, which
03:12 is the district 9150, which we belong,
03:14 which Rwanda belongs to, and which
03:16 includes other 10 countries as well in Africa.
03:20 I would say that Rwanda has been reacting
03:23 to the pandemic in a very, very strong and positive way.
03:27 The way we have-- yes, we've gone into lockdown
03:29 very strictly for some time, and that was to protect people.
03:33 And during all this time, the government
03:36 and the leadership of Rwanda has been
03:38 supporting the communities.
03:40 And I think that is the most important.
03:41 We've not seen that in a lot of countries.
03:44 So the fact that we've seen that in Rwanda
03:46 give us, as Rotarian, also the will and the engagement
03:49 to do the same, and to continue to contribute
03:52 and to help the communities, because that's
03:54 what we are here for.
03:55 So I believe that Rotarians have a very big role
03:59 to play at this point in time, that the world is going
04:03 through that crisis, and that Rwanda is still
04:06 trying to come out of that crisis.
04:08 And it is through our actions and through all the projects
04:11 that we want to put in place, that we are putting in place,
04:13 that we will be able to support the leadership of Rwanda
04:16 to be able to overcome the crisis.
04:19 To all the youth, I would say the message is really
04:22 that everyone can be a Rotarian.
04:25 You really have to have that heart.
04:28 And if you want to help people, come and join the Rotary.
