00:00 The Society for the Protection of Animals is a non-profit organization

00:05 whose main objective is to fight against abuse and abandonment of pets.

00:11 But do you know how this organization was born?

00:14 The very first animals that the SPA protected are horses.

00:18 In September 1843, a doctor, Pierre Dumont de Monteux,

00:23 walks in the streets of Paris and witnesses a horrifying scene.

00:27 The guard is giving whips to his horse, exhausted from carrying his goods.

00:32 The doctor intervenes and writes to the police prefect to report the facts.

00:37 He signs a motion the following month,

00:40 prohibiting the whipping of horses with the handle of a whip under penalty of sanction.

00:44 He joins the cause defended by the doctor Dumont de Monteux

00:48 and creates with him and a few others an association to protect them.
