00:02 - Eight rounds in the middleweight division
00:14 as we take a look at the tail of the tape.
00:17 You see Ulysses Tovar will enjoy
00:20 a substantial height advantage,
00:22 a little bit of a reach advantage as well,
00:24 but the power advantage is assumed
00:27 to be in the corner of Alexandra Gaumont,
00:29 the knockout artist,
00:31 who's extremely popular here in the Ottawa region
00:35 as round one begins.
00:37 See Gaumont, the white trunks trimmed in blue,
00:39 Ulysses Tovar in the red, trimmed with white.
00:43 - He's popular because he's from here,
00:44 but he's also popular because of the way he fights.
00:48 He said to you, Corey, in your notes before the show,
00:51 Gaumont said that he wants to prove that he can box,
00:53 but the people don't show up to see him box.
00:55 The people show up to see him do what he does,
00:58 and that's stalk people, hit them hard,
01:00 and watch them drop.
01:01 - Looks like Ulysses Tovar has a similar approach
01:06 here tonight as he bangs away to the body,
01:08 good counter off the ropes there from Gaumont a moment ago.
01:11 Ulysses Tovar, as we mentioned, eight and O,
01:18 coming off an eight round win
01:20 over Christian Alvarado in April.
01:22 He's had lots of good sparring over the years.
01:25 He's worked with Robinson Castellanos.
01:27 He trains frequently with Manuel "Superman" Vasquez,
01:30 who's a French 140 pound contender.
01:32 He's a real live opponent for Gaumont.
01:37 This isn't just an handpicked hometown opponent.
01:40 - And he's also been training, as you said,
01:41 with Charles Hatley in Dallas, Texas,
01:44 former world title challenger.
01:46 - Tovar trying to wrap that right hand
01:52 around the guard of Gaumont.
01:55 - No one, Corey, I don't know that we've seen
01:57 Gaumont in the ring with somebody as tall
02:01 and as long and as rangy as Tovar.
02:02 - Gaumont looking for that big left hook.
02:09 - Even half around in this fight,
02:10 this seems, Tovar seems like the best guy
02:13 we've seen Gaumont in with.
02:14 - Good right hand over the top there from Tovar.
02:25 That's one of those aspects that Tovar talked about
02:28 adding to his game, a little bit more fluidity.
02:30 He described it as a little bit more of an American style
02:33 with the time that he spent in Texas.
02:35 - That's what I was about to say,
02:36 that pool counter is a very American move
02:38 if we're playing geography as destiny as boxers.
02:41 - Which is not a concrete truth, by the way.
02:43 - No, not at all.
02:44 - I'm not gonna use the phrase Mexican style ever.
02:50 - Let's not.
02:54 - Good uppercut there from Gaumont.
02:56 He just misses with a home run right hand,
02:58 but look at Tovar, turns him around
03:00 and puts a combination together.
03:02 Good action here in the opening round.
03:06 - Yeah, I'm really interested to see how Gaumont reacts
03:08 to this because it's the first time we've seen him
03:10 in with a person that does not give him time and space
03:14 to think about what he wants to do.
03:15 - Beautiful long jab there.
03:22 10 seconds of round one.
03:25 Gaumont does a little work to the body.
03:28 - Couple of heavy left hands to the body.

04:36 - Action packed round one in the books
04:41 as round two begins.
04:42 - We don't have a translator tonight
04:47 for the benefit of our American viewers
04:49 who unlike Corey and I don't have elementary school
04:52 French education in a lifetime of reading French
04:55 off of food wrappers.
04:56 Gaumont's coach was asking,
04:59 he saw him ask for the overhand right,
05:00 but he also asked for a jab to the body.
05:03 So we'll see if Gaumont follows through this round.
05:06 - We can just see the explosiveness
05:12 and the punch delivery of Alexandre Gaumont.
05:15 And if you knew nothing about his record,
05:18 I think you could see how he's throwing his shots
05:20 and you would assume this is a power punch.
05:22 - This is a power punch indeed.
05:23 - You see our French colleague, Matt Cassavon,
05:30 giving the opening round to Ulysses Tovar.
05:33 - I can see it.
05:34 - Justifiably so.
05:36 Both men had good moments.
05:38 Good shot and that strayed a little bit low
05:41 according to the referee.
05:42 - You have to see the replay.
05:43 - We do not want another low blow gate.
05:47 I am tired of talking about it.
05:49 As is Russ Amber who made the trunks
05:54 that Alexandre Gaumont is wearing right now.
05:59 - Both of our DMs are gonna blow up after this.
06:02 - What?
06:03 - If we get a slow motion replay.
06:05 - Tovar, credit to him, goes right back downstairs.
06:09 The very first shot he threw.
06:11 - But honestly, that's what you have to do.
06:15 Like you can't let a borderline blow.
06:17 If body shots are part of your game plan,
06:19 you can't let one borderline blow scare you away
06:24 from the thing that you know you have to do to win the fight.
06:26 (crowd shouting)
06:29 - Well, and also supposing it didn't land low,
06:32 Gaumont's still feeling the effects of something.
06:34 - Exactly.
06:35 - Combination on the inside there from Tovar
06:39 goes right back downstairs.
06:40 Nice reply there from Gaumont.
06:43 And that's the risk if you are gonna go to the body.
06:45 If you're Tovar, you have to watch out
06:48 for those big counters over the top
06:49 because Gaumont is dangerous.
06:51 (whistle blows)
06:52 - But again, those counters over the top
06:54 is another thing that Gaumont's coaches
06:56 were asking him to throw.
06:58 (whistle blows)
07:01 That shot is there for him
07:02 every time Tovar goes to the body.
07:04 (whistle blows)
07:05 - This is a high tempo, high contact battle
07:08 between two guys at 160 pounds with a little bit of pop.
07:13 Both trying to prove that they are prospects to watch.
07:17 (crowd shouting)
07:20 (whistle blows)
07:24 - Neither fighter to this point
07:25 has graduated beyond their local scene,
07:28 but a win here tonight for either of them.
07:30 - This is a definite springboard fight for somebody.
07:34 And again, this is the best--
07:37 - Big right hand there from Tovar,
07:39 snaps the head back of Gaumont.
07:42 - Just as Tovar landed that punch,
07:46 I was about to say this is the best fighter
07:48 we've seen Gaumont in the ring with.
07:51 - I think by a wide margin,
07:52 Tovar now bangs away to the body once more.
07:55 Gaumont replies with an uppercut.
07:57 Tremendous action here in round two.
08:02 A potential show stealer on our hands
08:05 between Gaumont and Tovar.
08:07 (crowd applauding)
08:10 (crowd shouting)
08:17 (crowd shouting)
08:20 - Plenty of highlights to revisit.
08:34 Let's take a look back at some of them
08:36 from round two here, Morgan.
08:38 - Tovar is the longer fighter,
08:39 but you saw him there land a beautiful short left hook
08:41 in between Gaumont's punches.
08:44 (crowd shouting)
08:46 Catching him coming in with that jab.
08:48 There's the big right hand to the temple.
08:55 Got Gaumont's attention.
08:57 (whistle blows)
08:59 - As round three is set to begin,
09:04 we hear the community support here for Alexandra Gaumont,
09:08 but Ulysses Tovar,
09:10 hearing him talk about his day-to-day life,
09:13 he seems to have the same thing
09:15 in the Mountain King neighborhood where he lives.
09:18 He says that when he goes for runs,
09:19 people will come out of the butcher shop,
09:21 the grocery stores to congratulate him.
09:23 - That type of encouragement, you can't buy it.
09:27 And again, it's a throwback
09:30 to the days when fighting the locals,
09:33 you didn't see these within neighborhoods.
09:35 And that type of community support.
09:41 - Nice left hook from Alexandra Gaumont
09:44 to open up the round.
09:45 As you see, Matt Casablanca gave the last round
09:47 to Alexandra Gaumont.
09:50 I think that both of those rounds really are toss-up rounds.
09:52 They could have gone either way.
09:54 - Even two and a half rounds into this fight,
10:00 fairly early in Gaumont's career,
10:02 it's a bit of a crossroads in the sense
10:03 that now he has a problem in front of him
10:06 that he cannot just solve
10:08 simply by being stronger and more powerful.
10:11 In fact, Tovar is the one rocking him with right hands
10:14 as he does right there.
10:15 - Right, he's gonna have to apply some skills,
10:16 some strategy, some tactics, some technique
10:19 to make the adjustments.
10:21 And he might ultimately wind up solving this problem
10:24 with his power,
10:25 but he's gonna have to do other things to get there.
10:27 This is a fascinating fight to look for.
10:35 - Yeah, this is very aggressive matchmaking.
10:39 And Ulysses Tovar is not looking like a fighter
10:44 who is booked to be an opponent right now.
10:47 This is a firefight between two fighters
10:54 who want to be considered prospects.
10:56 Good uppercut there from Gaumont.
11:00 - Yeah, and I think Tovar did something there
11:03 that he's not gonna wanna do,
11:04 which is walk in with his hands up without throwing punches.
11:08 And Gaumont just walked him into a big left hook.
11:10 Tovar is more successful when he's doing
11:20 just that right there,
11:20 just keeping Gaumont at the end of his jab.
11:23 - Gaumont also, at least at this point in his career,
11:28 has shown that he has the type of power
11:29 that you don't want to just absorb shots
11:32 after on the arms.
11:34 - You can't do that.
11:34 - So this is a much better approach from Tovar right here,
11:37 leading with the jab and a nice left hook to the body.
11:40 - And even now, two and three quarter rounds
11:49 into this fight, I'm also impressed with Gaumont
11:52 in the sense that other people would have been discouraged.
11:55 And he is taking this very calmly,
11:57 even in the phases that he is losing
11:59 when he's getting the worst of it.
12:01 He hasn't lost his composure.
12:02 - He's also opened up an abrasion on the face of Tovar.
12:07 A big right hand from Tovar and from Gaumont at the same time
12:10 but that cut is something to look at
12:13 around the eye of Ulysses Tovar right now.

13:20 - Ulysses Tovar has described some of his fights
13:27 in the past as car crashes,
13:30 that he likes that kind of fight.
13:31 He's getting another one here tonight.
13:33 A very willing participant in that kind of physical fight

23:08 But look at Gomez coming with these big hooks.
23:14 See the power of those hooks from Gomez
23:16 moving the feet of Tovar.
23:18 But now Tovar moving his feet forward

23:34 this deep into a fight that's been this intense.
23:37 It's really impressive.
23:38 (crowd shouting)
23:41 - Or again, sticking that jab to the body,
23:48 but Gomez counters over the top of the right hand.
23:51 (crowd shouting)
23:53 Another thing that we often point out
24:00 is working against Tovar is the fact that
24:03 anything that Gomez throws
24:06 elicits a response from the crowd here.
24:08 - Yes, and as much as the judges aren't supposed to
24:11 take that into account. - A beautiful right hand there
24:12 from Tovar, that might be the best right hand
24:15 that he's landed in this fight.
24:17 - Certainly the best one since that right hand
24:18 to the temple early in round one or two.
24:21 - Gomez takes it, no visible effects.
24:25 And lands a nice uppercut and a left hook there.
24:27 Look at this.
24:30 Alexander Gomez, what a response after eating
24:33 what might have been the hardest shot
24:35 that Tovar has thrown in this fight,
24:37 comes back with three colossal shots of his own.
24:39 - And that's one more thing we've learned
24:41 about Alexander Gomez tonight is that
24:43 he can take a punch because he's been hit clean
24:46 three or four times.
24:48 And he's taking it and come back.
24:51 - As we see right here as we take a look back at round six.
24:54 - You can see Tovar's punches for the most part
25:00 are a little bit less crisp now
25:02 than they were in round one and two.
25:04 But he's still having his moments.
25:06 Gomez again, the ability to take these punches
25:08 and come right back is impressive.
25:10 Big right hand, pull counter.
25:14 (whistle blows)
25:28 (crowd cheering)
25:33 (crowd cheering)
25:35 - Round seven now underway, two to go.
25:42 What has been a terrific fight
25:45 between Alexander Gomez and Ulysses Tovar.
25:47 Marceline Gomez, the father of Alexander Gomez.
25:56 In his corner, one thing he's praised his son for
26:01 over his, or after his most recent fights,
26:04 his calmness inside the ring.
26:06 We're seeing that here tonight.
26:08 While under the most fire that he's experienced
26:11 inside the ring thus far.
26:12 - Yeah, he's under the rest.
26:14 He's remained composed,
26:18 been able to stick to the game plan,
26:20 implement what the corner's telling him to do now.
26:23 - Father of Marceline, taught the sport
26:27 by Canadian boxing legend,
26:29 former world title challenger, Gaetan Hart,
26:32 who's also here in attendance.
26:33 And Alexandra, very much a student
26:37 of Canadian boxing history.
26:38 I mean, if you're a real Canadian boxing nerd,
26:41 you heard him walk out to "Conquest of Paradise,"
26:44 which is the same song that Stéphane Roulette
26:45 used to walk up to.
26:47 - You know, I didn't know that.
26:48 - Yeah, well that was his favorite fighter growing up.
26:50 - I must be a real Canadian boxing nerd
26:52 with a lowercase r, you have the capital r.
26:54 (laughing)
26:57 - Good shot to the body there from Gaumont.
26:59 Right hand to the body a moment ago,
27:02 right along the belt line.
27:04 Short counter left hook there from Gaumont,
27:16 took a little bit off that one.
27:17 Landed all the same.
27:25 (crowd cheering)
27:27 Rocked the ropes there for Gaumont,
27:30 back on his jab now.
27:32 - Gaumont just looks so comfortable
27:34 and so in rhythm right now.
27:35 Yeah, it took a few rounds to find him.
27:38 But this is also the point of stepping up in class,
27:44 as they say in boxing.
27:45 You have an opponent, different tools,
27:52 bigger toolkit, different skill set,
27:55 gonna ask questions of Gaumont
27:56 that have not been asked before
27:57 and Gaumont has had the answers.
28:00 - Gaumont is showing that he can win rounds
28:03 in a way that isn't just in full blown pursuit of a knockout.
28:07 - Yes.
28:07 - Plan A right now doesn't seem to be
28:10 scoring the knockout for Gaumont.
28:11 That may be a byproduct of what he's doing,
28:14 but he's boxing, as you mentioned,
28:16 he's in rhythm right now.
28:17 - Yes, and again, that's what we didn't know about him
28:19 heading into this fight,
28:21 is if he had a way to win fights,
28:23 it just did not involve overwhelming people with his power.
28:27 And now we have an answer to that question.
28:29 - Shot there from Tovar a moment ago.
28:31 There haven't been too many of them from him
28:34 in the seventh round, but look at that,
28:36 nice combination right at the bell.
28:38 As I say that, Tovar hasn't gone away quite yet.
28:41 - No.
28:49 - Tovar's fighting like a guy who
28:51 wants to come back to Canada win, lose, or draw.
28:55 - Well, prior to those final 10 seconds,
28:58 this might've been the most complete round of the fight,
29:02 maybe the most one-sided round of the fight for Gaumont.
29:04 - For sure.
29:05 Look at that, caught him with a little check hook coming in.
29:09 Made him miss, made him pay.
29:12 Three shots off of that missed left hook.
29:16 (crowd chanting)
29:18 This is the best boxing we've ever seen
29:21 from an Alexander Gaumont.
29:24 (crowd chanting)
29:45 - Eighth and final round of what has been an action-packed,
29:49 special feature here between Alexander Gaumont
29:53 and Ulysses Tovar.
29:54 Couple of undefeated middleweights,
29:58 with identical records coming into this contest.
30:02 Gaumont with one more knockout
30:03 that Tovar had on his ledger.
30:05 Aggressive matchmaking here from Eye of the Tiger
30:13 with Alexander Gaumont.
30:14 So far, he is passive-attached,
30:16 but Ulysses Tovar is going to be dangerous
30:19 until the final bell.
30:20 Got caught there for Gaumont.
30:26 - Two to the body.
30:28 - Tovar almost leaned into that,
30:30 almost took it on the chin.
30:32 - Very aggressive matchmaking,
30:35 and you have to give Eye of the Tiger credit,
30:38 because given the number of tickets that Gaumont sells,
30:41 he could fight me, he could fight you,
30:44 he could fight a parking ticket,
30:46 he's still gonna sell seats in here.
30:48 But they matched him up,
30:49 but that wasn't necessarily a point, selling tickets.
30:53 They know they could do that.
30:54 What they didn't know is whether he could pass this test,
30:56 whether he could win a fight
30:58 that he wasn't gonna win on pure power,
31:00 whether he could take a punch and give back,
31:01 and these are the answers they got to him,
31:03 while still selling tickets.
31:07 - Tovar still asking those questions
31:10 with about a minute and a half remaining in this contest,
31:14 and Gaumont still coming up with answers.
31:17 - Tovar's still coming,
31:35 but the drop-off in his power,
31:39 in his output, in his level of output
31:40 has been pretty precipitous.
31:42 - And the frequency has dropped dramatically here.
31:48 - Whereas Gaumont is still hitting as hard now
31:50 as he was three or four rounds ago.
31:52 - That's that cold counter right hand from Tovar,
31:57 but Gaumont, again, just has that fighter's instinct
32:02 when he gets hit to fire back in combination
32:05 and make you forget about that big moment
32:07 that Tovar just had.
32:08 - That's also more than an instinct,
32:10 that's a reflex, but a learned reflex,
32:14 because it's easy just to throw wild after you get hit,
32:17 but to come back with a measured combination
32:19 after you get hit, that's something you have to learn.
32:21 Like that's boxing as opposed to fighting,
32:25 even with the fighter's instinct.
32:27 - Alexander Gaumont only had 24 amateur wins.
32:33 14 of them came by way of knockout,
32:36 so it is a little surprising to see him pile up the rounds,
32:41 just outboxing Tovar.
32:42 A terrific performance from Alexander Gaumont,
32:49 one that might be a little bit of an eye opener.
32:52 I mean, I personally will admit that Gaumont,
32:57 the early stages of his career,
32:59 when you looked at what he did as an amateur,
33:01 just so few amateur fights and the way that he won them,
33:04 he profiled as kind of a local attraction that had power
33:07 that might get tripped up a little bit later on.
33:10 Now you start to think that maybe there's a little bit more
33:12 to Alexander Gaumont after watching that.
33:14 - Yeah, he had some layers tonight
33:16 that we did not know that he had.
33:17 We didn't know that he could take a punch and come back.
33:21 We did not know, again, that he could solve problems
33:24 that he had previously only solved with power.
33:27 You take away his power and say,
33:28 solve this problem some other kind of way.
33:30 Solve it with skill, solve it with tactics.
33:32 We didn't know if he could do that.
33:33 Now we know he can do that.
33:34 (upbeat music)
33:37 - Let's take a look back at some of Gaumont's work
33:43 from the eighth and final round
33:45 as he started things off early there,
33:48 hooking off the jab beautifully.
33:50 - Counter right hand at the end of that combination.
33:54 Finishing the combination, that previous combination,
33:58 finishing it with the jab like Miguel Cotto did
34:00 against Bayweather, pitching backwards.
34:02 (upbeat music)
34:04 - Big night for the Ottawa region contingent.
34:12 Harley David O'Reilly, Vanessa Lepage-O'Anisse,
34:15 Alexandra Gaumont, saw Devin Tomko a little bit earlier.
34:18 Collection of impressive performances,
34:23 but maybe none better.
34:24 The one for that man here tonight, Alexandra Gaumont.
34:29 We'll be interested in hearing what the scorecards look like.
34:32 And we will find out right now.
34:36 Let's send it down to the center of the ring.
34:37 (speaking in foreign language)
34:41 - After eight action-packed rounds,
34:56 we go to the judges' scorecards for the decision.
35:00 (speaking in foreign language)
35:04 All three judges score the bout 79-73.
35:11 For the winner by unanimous decision,
35:15 Alexandra Gaumont!
35:17 (audience cheering)
35:25 So Alexandra Gaumont remains undefeated,
35:28 improves to 9-0.
35:30 And the scorecard, 79-73 across the board.
35:36 So just one round,
35:37 the judges were able to find for Ulysses Tovar.
