00:00 "And you've got to be really careful when you're dealing around these huge predators."
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at physical strength, bite power, and limb
00:10 force to determine which is the pound-for-pound strongest creature of the animal world.
00:16 "And the big males battle for the best fishing spots."
00:22 Number 10.
00:23 Blue Whale With a tongue roughly as heavy as an elephant
00:26 and a heart that weighs as much as a car, blue whales are a force to be reckoned with.
00:34 After all, they're the largest creatures to have ever existed on Earth at up to 190 tons
00:40 in weight.
00:44 And with all that mass, it needs massive power to get around the ocean and swim over a thousand
00:49 feet into its depths to consume four tons of krill per day.
00:54 It's been estimated that a blue whale can carry up to 13,900 pounds of weight.
00:59 For comparison, that's around three and a half giraffes.
01:09 Number 9.
01:11 Tiger Lions tend to get a lot of publicity, but
01:14 they have nothing compared to the real threat of the feline world, the tiger.
01:18 "The four humans on the other end of the rope are no match for this 26 stone big cat."
01:24 For example, lions have a bite force of 650 pounds per square inch, or psi, while tigers
01:30 produce 1,050 psi.
01:33 On top of having the longest canine teeth in big cats, "tigers have more muscle mass
01:39 and are therefore heavier."
01:41 On average, the striped felines can lift around double their body weight.
01:45 One Siberian tiger that was discovered in 1943 weighed up to 660 pounds.
01:51 As such, it should have been able to carry up to 1,200 pounds.
01:56 But that's not all.
01:57 Tigers often drag their prey into a tree to eat as it's safer.
02:02 So they're hoisting this weight against gravity, making the feet even more impressive.
02:09 Number 8.
02:11 Anaconda Besides gaining infamy due to a Nicki Minaj
02:14 song, anacondas are known for their mammoth size.
02:18 After all, the green anaconda species, while not the longest snake in the world, that title
02:23 goes to the reticulated python, it is the heaviest and also the strongest.
02:33 The biggest on record weighed 500 pounds and was 27.7 feet long.
02:38 Green anacondas have been known to feed on large animals like deer, capybaras, and jaguars.
02:44 This ripped reptile is known to wrap up its prey and squeeze it before consuming it.
02:48 In seconds, anacondas wrap around their prey, constricting tighter and tighter until the
02:53 blood supply is cut off.
02:55 That squeeze can be a force of up to 90 psi, which is said to be similar to an elephant
03:00 sitting on a human's chest.
03:03 Yikes.
03:04 Number 7.
03:10 Leafcutter Ant Yep, a particular species of ant is known
03:14 to be one of the strongest creatures in the world.
03:17 And if they weren't so small, humans would probably be doomed.
03:25 The Adecephalodes leafcutter ant has an average weight of around 1.5 grams.
03:31 These little critters are said to be able to carry items weighing up to 50 times their
03:35 weights, around 75 grams.
03:37 If the average US human male could do the same, weighing on the average of 199.7 pounds,
03:44 they could lift something that was 9,985 pounds.
03:49 That's around the same as two black rhinoceroses.
03:56 And to make the Adecephalodes more fearsome, they essentially have metal teeth with zinc
04:01 atoms woven into their jaws.
04:13 Number 6.
04:15 Elephants As the undisputed heaviest and largest land
04:18 animal, with three different species occupying the top three slots, elephants are already
04:23 an intimidating sight.
04:28 Elephants notice this quickly as they've been used in war and for logging.
04:32 But on top of their own size and lugging that around, they can also lift huge amounts.
04:37 The African bush elephant can weigh up to 14,000 pounds, and it's said to be able to
04:42 carry over its own weight at around 20,000 pounds.
04:46 For comparison, that's roughly the same as 13 cows.
04:50 Thankfully elephants are herbivores.
04:52 Otherwise we humans might have had a serious problem.
05:00 Number 5.
05:02 Saltwater Crocodile We all know that crocodiles are a massive
05:10 threat.
05:11 However, Florida State University determined how fearsome they are after publishing the
05:15 results of a study in 2012.
05:18 Led by Gregory Erickson, they discovered the bite force a saltwater crocodile can produce.
05:23 Before this, the highest was 2,980 psi from an American alligator.
05:28 But the saltwater knocked it out of the park with a whopping 3,700 psi.
05:37 Yet that still might not be the highest amount amongst the big reptiles.
05:40 Another study showed that the Nile crocodile is the reigning champ of chomping with 5,000
05:46 psi.
05:47 Interestingly, their jaw-opening mechanism is very weak, making it achievable for a person
05:52 to hold their mouths closed.
05:54 Number 4.
05:55 Gorilla Another primary herbivore, and our distant
06:04 cousin, the gorilla is the largest and strongest primate.
06:07 For starters, a male silverback, a mature gorilla, has a bite force of 1,300 psi.
06:13 For comparison, humans have 162 psi bite force.
06:18 Yikes!
06:19 Weighing up to around 590 pounds in the wild, gorillas pack a lot of power behind their
06:23 fur.
06:29 On average, they can lift objects that weigh 1,000 pounds.
06:33 Yet their punch is even more impressive.
06:35 Humans typically can strike up to 150 pounds of force, yet gorillas can punch up to 2,700.
06:42 But if you anger one in the wild, running away won't do much.
06:45 Humans can reach up to 23 miles per hour.
06:48 Gorillas can hit 25.
06:56 Number 3.
06:58 Grizzly Bear While you might be super tempted to hug a
07:00 grizzly bear, we really, really couldn't recommend it less.
07:05 After all, these furry beasts are among the strongest mammals on the planet.
07:11 In 2006, a study by Montana State University found the bears were able to easily play with
07:17 an object weighing 700 pounds.
07:29 They concluded the creatures have the strength of up to five humans, but they admitted it
07:34 would be higher if the bears were enraged.
07:37 And that's very true.
07:39 Some researchers have claimed a grizzly can lift a 661-pound rock with a single paw.
07:44 But that's not all.
07:46 On top of a bite force of 975 psi, a single paw strike of a grizzly is said to produce
07:52 600 pounds of force.
07:58 Number 2.
07:59 Eagle Depending on the eagle's species, you could
08:02 be in for a bad time if you angered one.
08:05 As such, they're by far the toughest bird around.
08:08 And that's without even getting into the advantages of their incredible eyesight.
08:12 Typically, the various species can carry things that weigh up to four pounds.
08:16 However, there have been accusations that the harpy eagle has lifted up to 20 pounds.
08:21 On top of the eagle's lightning 100-miles-per-hour dives, their talons are another big concern.
08:33 On the low end, bald eagles can have a grip strength of 300 psi.
08:37 This could easily break a human's arm bones.
08:40 But it gets worse.
08:42 Some estimates claim they can go as high as 1,000 psi.
08:50 Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
08:54 Hippopotamus With a bite force of 1,800 psi, hippos are
08:58 a fearsome bunch.
09:06 Zebra The strongest kickers in the animal kingdom
09:09 can lash out with 3,000 psi.
09:18 Musk Ox These hairy machines can pull weights of over
09:21 1,900 pounds.

09:50 Dung Beetle As intimidating as a bear, a shark, or a gorilla
09:54 is, none of them can match the size-to-strength ratio of the humble dung beetle.
09:59 In 2010, the Queen Mary University of London, led by Dr. Rob Nell, found that the Anthophagus
10:05 taurus, better known as the Taurus scarab, could pull 1,141 times its own weight.
10:20 For perspective, that's said to be the equivalent of a single human dragging six double-decker
10:24 buses filled with other people.
10:27 Yikes!
10:29 Thankfully, they stick to rolling around… well, dung.
10:37 But another insect that's a secret powerhouse is the European Rhinoceros beetle.
10:41 It's said to be able to lift items that are 850 times its own weight.
10:48 What's the strongest animal that we humans typically use as a pet?
10:54 A cat, a dog, a guinea pig, or something else?
