For the initial episode of PEPTalk with The Boss, we have young boss Nicko Falcis, Country Manager of Do Day Dream Philippines, giving us a tour of their F'7 offices in Quezon City.

Where can you find an office with young Gen Z employees who, during their breaks, can belt out songs in the office karaoke machine?

Yes, you read it right. A karaoke or videoke set up inside an office.

It looks like the "F" in their building's F'7 logo stands for "Fun."

Watch PEP.ph's tour of their offices and also learn from Boss Nicko about how to start a business.

00:08 So F7 is really like our commercial building,
00:11 built by me and my sister.
00:13 So the vision was to always have a great office at the top floor,
00:17 but we rent out with great commercial and food
00:21 establishments at the first floor.
00:24 Why F7 and here in Quezon City?
00:28 We grew up here, so this is our comfort zone.
00:30 And we believe that this is where
00:33 all the potential synergy and resources can be combined.
00:37 Before, during our day one, we only had a room.
00:41 I think 60 square meters only, or two big conference rooms,
00:45 and that's it.
00:46 So we turned it into a secret bar,
00:48 or we turned it into a speakeasy bar.
00:51 We only started with six people.
00:53 And then it was supposed to be just a boutique project.
00:58 And from there on, it grew, even amidst pandemic.
01:02 We also got shocked, but there was really
01:05 such a huge potential.
01:07 And how we managed to scale it up as fast as we can,
01:12 or as best as we can, was still a very, very big blessing
01:16 for all of us.
01:17 So now, five years later, we consider ourselves
01:22 like a flat team still.
01:24 So now we grew from that small number to around 55, I think.
01:29 But that's already everyone, including warehouse,
01:32 including the people behind offline and online.
01:37 The vision has always been more of a tech startup feel.
01:43 There's no permanent desk.
01:44 There are only hot desks.
01:46 Most of it are admin, but a lot of our managers
01:49 are really out and about.
01:51 Even during the pandemic, what we learned
01:53 was that we can really work virtually as well,
01:56 or we can really work offsite.
01:58 So I think it's something that attracts the younger workforce.
02:02 So the younger workforce really enjoys our policy
02:04 of work from anywhere.
02:06 Of course, here you get very, very fast internet,
02:08 or you could do a lot more things
02:10 when you do your focus time.
02:11 But you could still do it wherever you are.
02:14 Nobody will look for you.
02:15 Nobody will micromanage you as well.
02:19 So it's very free-flowing.
02:20 So you would see a lot of rooms, a lot of desks,
02:22 but no permanent position, or no permanent room assignment.
02:27 The mood is very relaxed.
02:29 So you would see that at least even when you're here,
02:33 I think the whole vibe is to just have a lot more comfort
02:36 or over the productivity that it requires.
02:40 So even our sofas, our chairs, there's a lot to choose from.
02:44 Before, we had a karaoke machine also in between.
02:47 So you would see a TV there, and then you
02:49 can actually do karaoke or watch anything, YouTube.
02:54 Of course, we watch a lot of the YouTube
02:55 for all the digital marketing.
02:57 But of course, now some new people came,
03:00 and we had to rearrange, and new hot desks were inputted.
03:03 But you can still sing in the middle of the room with the TV.
03:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:10 So what are your favorite spots?
03:17 OK.
03:19 Actually, every spot has a special function for me,
03:22 and they would know if I'm there,
03:24 then I would be concentrating on a particular task
03:27 or a particular function.
03:29 So here is more--
03:30 this is my Monday office vibe.
03:33 So I go here, where you sign a lot of the checks,
03:36 a lot of the hard copies.
03:39 This is also where all the emails are sent.
03:42 But when I go there, all the way there, it's the sales side.
03:45 So we discuss about our sales strategies, all the promotions,
03:49 all the campaigns, all the incoming products
03:52 that need to be launched.
03:55 And then we have a Glow Studio, which
03:56 I'm so excited to show you also.
03:58 So welcome to the age of live streaming, live selling.
04:02 And we have our own independent studio for that one.
04:06 So we do have a nice ref there with all the snacks.
04:10 We have all the pod machines for coffee.
04:15 We do have a very young workforce.
04:17 Our average median age for managers and even admin
04:21 is as low as 25 years old.
04:24 I'm one of the oldest already, as I said.
04:28 But the culture is like a very high level
04:32 of peer-to-peer respect.
04:34 What type of people do you usually look for?
04:37 Or do you look for working women?
04:41 Actually, I just look for the ones that really show up,
04:45 meaning that I keep telling them, yes,
04:49 they want to do the shortcuts.
04:50 But there are no shortcuts in life, only hacks.
04:53 Or only good playbook, like I saw this here
04:58 as best practice.
04:59 Or we have a life hack here.
05:01 But those hacks just make things efficient.
05:04 Oh my god, I am the most big picture person
05:07 you will ever meet.
05:09 I am zero micromanager.
05:11 I don't even care what you do with your time.
05:14 People always ask me if that gets kind of scary
05:18 because you're not on top of your people.
05:21 But I just let them be free.
05:23 But the accountability is very high.
05:25 You show up, you show up.
05:27 There's a deadline, there's a deadline.
05:29 If not, then I counsel you out.
05:31 So I'm also the type of person who can say things as it is.
05:36 Whether you do bad, whether you do good.
05:39 I'm the worst critic and I'm the best cheerleader also.
05:42 That kind of coaching.
05:43 So I tell my peers also that I think I'm a better coach
05:47 than a manager.
05:49 Not the fear boss.
05:50 My fear, I instill in them the fear of
05:53 they have to fail fast but win more.
05:57 So that's it.
05:58 But my end goal is to really teach them
06:00 to be more entrepreneurs
06:01 rather than corporate, corporate managers.
06:05 Other secret sauce would be sourcing.
06:07 How you would have your suppliers
06:11 and good negotiations, et cetera.
06:13 And of course, lastly, the best secret sauce is people.
06:17 People, really.
06:18 So when you want to start a business,
06:19 my first question is,
06:21 do you have staff or admin?
06:24 Because you'd be surprised,
06:25 that is the backbone of a Philippine-run business.
06:29 Having a lot of good people around you.
06:32 And so far, and I'm very proud,
06:35 nobody left.
06:37 My driver is still with me for 16 years.
06:39 My first secretary has been with me
06:42 since I was 25 years old.
06:44 My first staff is still with us until now.
06:47 So yeah, that's where we're really lucky.
06:51 I'm not that into money.
06:54 For me, it's free-flowing.
06:55 Money is a tool.
06:56 It's a great, great, great tool.
06:58 But it's a tool.
06:59 It's not an end.
07:01 It's not a consequence.
07:03 But it's just a tool.
07:04 So like, for example, we used to say,
07:06 "Oh, Ate, I want a building."
07:07 We didn't know how we'd get all of that.
07:10 We'd loan money,
07:11 or we'd borrow from our aunt or uncle, etc.
07:14 And then, "Oh, there's a building."
07:16 So that's what it takes to create,
07:18 let's say, the building.
07:19 I'm very proud that,
07:21 because of course, my background is finance,
07:23 so that's a big help.
07:25 You know, I'm a CPA, finance person.
07:28 So I'm like, I'm matrixing the PNL.
07:32 So like, I get it.
07:33 You know, it's very clear to me
07:35 what moved the PNL.
07:37 There were no surprises.
07:40 Because if you can really predict it,
07:41 then you can really run a business
07:43 as efficient as you can.
07:45 So what's your end goal?
07:53 Like, is it a zillion?
07:54 - Or is it a million? - No.
07:56 Yes, the end goal...
07:58 Um...
08:00 There's...
08:00 So this is from a recent TV show, right?
08:03 Succession is not inheritance.
08:04 Inheritance is not succession.
08:06 Fortunately or unfortunately,
08:09 you know, I don't plan to have a family.
08:11 I think work is my passion.
08:13 You know, the passion is work.
08:15 But the end goal is to just
08:18 see where this comes through.
08:20 But more adventures.
08:23 But there's no clear, like,
08:24 it needs to be x billion.
08:25 It needs to be 100 million billion pesos.
08:28 Well, not like that.
08:30 More on,
08:30 "Okay, what if we have a building in Korea?"
08:33 Right? Or like,
08:34 "Okay, what if we establish an office in Madrid?"
08:38 So, things like that.
08:39 What would be your advice
08:41 to those who want to have their own company
08:45 or bring in a new product?
08:48 Always, it's like,
08:49 you have to be your first customer.
08:52 You cannot, you know,
08:53 you cannot have a business
08:55 wherein you are not a customer of.
08:58 I think that represents, like,
09:00 the first level of trust and confidence
09:03 into your product or into that brand.
09:05 More importantly is that
09:07 you have to do it now.
09:08 Because if you don't do it,
09:09 then, you know, it's always shoo-da-woo-da-koo-da.
09:11 So, you have to be your own activator.
