00:00 He's in here!
00:02 Boogeyman's in this house!
00:04 (screaming)
00:06 Michael Myers in that mask
00:08 represents pure evil.
00:10 The character who is between
00:12 a human being and the supernatural.
00:14 There's something scary about
00:16 someone committing those kind of
00:18 violent acts with like no emotion at all
00:20 and that's what that mask does.
00:22 (screaming)
00:24 I'm gonna kill you!
00:26 (screaming)
00:28 You can project your own things
00:30 that frighten you onto that mask.
00:32 You feel it, don't you Michael?
00:34 (dramatic music)
00:36 I hired Christopher Nelson,
00:38 an amazing Oscar winning
00:40 effects makeup artist and said
00:42 let's make the mask.
00:44 40 years later it's gonna have cracks
00:46 and deteriorate it a little bit
00:48 but let's keep that beautiful melancholy character.

00:58 Approaching the mask had to have
01:00 the same expression. The way the dirt
01:02 collected on the nose and the mouth
01:04 and on the neck and the way it warped
01:06 specifically that original mask
01:08 had an expression of tragedy,
01:10 of blankness.
01:12 Where it came from was
01:14 John Carpenter sent Tommy Wallace out to get
01:16 some Halloween masks in the first one.
01:18 Tried to figure out what this guy was gonna wear
01:20 and he got this Captain Kirk mask.
01:22 He showed it to them and they really liked it.
01:24 He said, "Let's change it." So Tommy Wallace
01:26 ripped the sideburns off of it,
01:28 took the eyebrows off of it, cut the eye holes
01:30 bigger and spray painted it white
01:32 and sprayed the hair brown. And it ended up
01:34 being this very strange
01:36 mannequin-like, you know, soulless
01:38 almost great white shark of a human.
01:40 (dramatic music)
01:42 When he puts
01:44 that mask on, he
01:46 changes. The lack
01:48 of any human response
01:50 is really quite terrifying.

01:58 When the mask goes on, I'm in an
02:00 altered state. There's this switch that goes
02:02 off and all of a sudden my breathing changes.
02:04 It's not something I'm really in touch with outside
02:06 of doing this.
02:08 (dramatic music)
02:10 I want him to disappear
02:12 into the essence of evil.
02:14 Two, one. (screaming)
02:16 The mask is this
02:18 perfect storm of
02:20 all these things coming together to create
02:22 this iconic thing.
