Tottenham Hotspur: Worst Moment of 2023
Transcript
00:00 Now, looking at worst moments, we've got a few more listed down. Tottenham, of course,
00:05 at the start of the calendar year, were not the side they are currently now under Antropos
00:09 de Koglou. So, going through some of the worst moments, as I mentioned, there's quite a few
00:14 to get through. Which ones have you picked?
00:17 Well, we'll start at the top. Let's stay away from the match action for now. Obviously,
00:22 the moment Harry Kane left Spurs to sign for Bayern Munich, that's got to go down as one
00:26 of the worst moments ever as a Spurs fan. Probably just sort of rivaled by the day Gareth
00:32 Bale left as well for Real Madrid. But I always remember where I was there. I'd actually been
00:37 out celebrating my wedding anniversary and I got the call from my six-year-old son telling
00:41 me that Kane had departed. He was crying his eyes out. My daughter was writing him letters
00:45 asking him to stay. It sounds a bit melodramatic really, but it was a terrible moment for Spurs.
00:51 Waking up to that news that he'd finally left the club after such a long tenure, obviously
00:56 267 goals for the club, outstanding clubman, brilliant finisher, so underrated as well.
01:02 I don't think he'd really truly be fully appreciated by English fans until he's retired because
01:06 he gets a lot of flack from England fans in particular and obviously rival supporters.
01:11 But look at what he's doing for Bayern Munich now. He's absolutely putting up trees there,
01:15 isn't he? And he's gone on, arguably, to take the career on to the next level. And hopefully
01:20 he ends up with a trophy cabinet full at the end of the season. But that was a horrible
01:25 moment. It was a gut punch right on the eve of the season. And to lose, arguably, one
01:29 of the best players ever to be seen in the Tottenham shirt, if not the best, was absolutely
01:34 devastating. So that goes down as one of the worst moments.
01:39 In terms of the match action, I've picked out a couple actually. The moment Benton Kerr
01:44 got his injury at Leicester, we've only seen him for 30 minutes or so. Since then, that
01:49 was nine months ago. Rolls-Royce of a midfielder, he was having a brilliant season. He was winning
01:54 matches for Tottenham, scoring goals. He nicked us a 3-2 at Bournemouth. He got the winner
01:59 against Leeds at Whitehall when we were just flip-flopping behind and we ended up winning
02:04 4-3 in that one. He really was driving Spurs on as a leader. And you saw in that 30 minutes
02:10 when he came back against Aston Villa before his latest injury, he was absolutely bossing
02:14 the game. He's got so much talent and I can't wait in 2024 to see that midfielder of Benton
02:19 Kerr, Bissouma and Maddison. I really do think that's up there with the best in the league.
02:24 So, to see him get injured and be out for such a long time and then obviously to have his
02:28 moment when he came back into the team and got that really bad tackle from Matty Cash.
02:32 He's out for another few months now, it was pretty devastating. So that's another one
02:36 of the worst moments. And I've picked out two matches. You'll have fond memories of
02:41 this one, Dan, but the drubbing... I certainly do.
02:45 When we went up there, I was in the crowd that day, 6-1. We were, what, 2-3 nil down
02:51 after 19 minutes. It was 5-0 at half-time. 5-0, 5-0. Just thought I'd take a couple of
02:58 goals off there. But that was just horrendous, absolutely horrendous. Hugo Lloris' last
03:03 match in the Spurs shirt, he was hooked at half-time. We went from a back five to a back
03:08 four and it absolutely backfired, literally. It was just raining goals. It was so bad,
03:15 it was almost funny, to be honest with you, in the end. In the stands at half-time and
03:19 down in the concourse, it was almost like ironic laughter. It was just so, so bad.
03:25 We had a decent day out, but it was a horrendous result. We've had a couple of bad ones
03:30 at St James' Park, but that was certainly another one. And then we went out of the
03:35 Champions League with a whimper against Milan. I think that's another low of this year
03:39 just gone. But the FA Cup game has to stand out as well. We went there, Sheffield United,
03:45 Stellini was in charge. We changed the team. I think we changed nine or ten players. We
03:49 left Kane on the bench. Huge opportunity to at least get to a semi-final. I think we'd
03:54 have played Blackburn, I think, had results gone our way. Brilliant opportunity to at
03:59 least get to Wembley for a semi-final or a final. We just completely blew it. The attitude
04:04 was horrendous. The performance was even worse. It was just so, so bad. And really, I think
04:11 that's one of the most angriest moments of certainly the year for me as a Spurs fan.
04:15 And it just added to that feeling of disconnectivity. We had some real, real dark times under Antonio
04:22 Conte towards the end, and then obviously Stellini. He didn't last very long either.
04:26 It was a real bad, bad period to be a Spurs fan. And that really does stand out as one
04:30 one of the worst games of the season, of the year, sorry, this year.
