00:00 "I understand. It's, uh, hard losing a friend."
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for Rick and Morty characters who took a one-way portal to the other side.
00:11 Since we're talking about deaths that are potentially significant, there is a spoiler alert.
00:16 "So this is 'Vindicators 3' and you guys did 'Vindicators 2' without us?"
00:23 "I sense insecurity."
00:27 #20 Story Lord
00:29 Voiced by Paul Giamatti, Story Lord is a formidable opponent of Rick who is able to manipulate storytelling devices against the scientist.
00:37 "Story Lord, I should have known you were behind this and I did."
00:40 "Who is this guy?"
00:41 "Ugh, he's like a Matrix space Frasier."
00:43 Like the "Tickets, please" guy, he has a cut physique and strong fighting skills.
00:48 A pompous figure who is fixated on story structure, Story Lord's motivations revolve around literary categories such as breaking the fifth wall
00:56 and seeking the world's supply of motivation.
00:58 "Yes, I can feel it! I'm so motivated! I want... a lot!"
01:05 However, the villain meets his end in full-metal Jack Rick after fighting Rick in a rematch where he's smothered by cheap merchandise.
01:12 Talk about poetic justice.
01:14 #19 Slow Mobius
01:17 We first see Slow Mobius in the season 1 finale "Ricksey Business" where he attends Rick's house party as a guest.
01:23 "Knock it off, Slow Mobius!"
01:25 "Hey! Sorry, dude! I'm just trying to show off my powers, bro!"
01:30 At first, he looks like a minor throwaway character, but in "Unmort Ricken," it's revealed that the time dilator is Rick's uncle that he loves dearly.
01:38 Unfortunately, Rick Prime kidnaps Slow Mobius and kills him across all dimensions to get a rise out of Rick.
01:44 "Where am I? Two Ricks? Where's my wife? I was just with my wife!"
01:48 "Uncle Slow!"
01:50 "What the f--k? Uncle Slow? Slow Mobius?"
01:52 "Yeah, this one hurts me too."
01:54 After Slow's passing, his wife goes out looking for him before meeting someone else and moving on,
01:59 which shows the lives that Slow Mobius's death impacted.
02:02 #18 Jerry Smith Prime
02:06 This is the version of Jerry from season 1 that lives in the universe the Cronenberg monsters take over.
02:11 We see Jerry Prime go from a cowardly, whiny man-baby to a resourceful action hero.
02:17 "Looking for this?"
02:18 "What are you doing with that?"
02:19 "It stinks of Rick."
02:22 "Why? Why would you do that? What is the matter with you people?"
02:25 The remarkable thing about Jerry Prime is this is what Jerry could have been
02:29 if the comforts of society hadn't kept him complacent.
02:33 However, the tragedy of the apocalypse takes its toll on Jerry,
02:36 as he loses Beth and Summer and is forced to learn how to go on without them.
02:40 "With no one left to blame, I finally had to deal with myself.
02:43 Buried my grief at Barnes & Noble.
02:45 Four agreements, he pray love, Frank Miller's The Dark Knight returns.
02:49 Learn to accept things for what they are."
02:51 Sadly, in the post-credits scene for Solarix, Rick Prime kills off Jerry,
02:55 but at least Jerry gets a dignified death.
02:58 For a Jerry.
02:59 #17 King Jellybean
03:01 Morty comes across this royal anthropomorphic candy in the bathroom.
03:06 Though he appears nice and supportive at first,
03:08 Jellybean shows his true colors as a predator when he forces himself on Morty.
03:13 "Everything's going fine. I just gotta relax and go with the flow."
03:17 "Yeah."
03:18 Immediately after the assault, Morty acts traumatized around Rick,
03:22 who is able to figure out what happened to his grandson.
03:24 When Rick and Morty come across Jellybean again,
03:27 Rick takes the opportunity to assassinate the king for what he did.
03:30 "No, it's cool! Rick, portal, hurry!"
03:32 Jellybean was an example of the random dark humor of Rick and Morty,
03:42 embodying something that is both absurd and sinister at the same time.
03:46 #16 Roy
03:48 Unlike other characters on this list, Roy is a fictional character within the show,
03:53 as he's the main character of an arcade game at Blips and Shits.
03:56 "Here, check this out."
03:57 "Roy, what's wrong?"
04:02 "I had a nightmare. I was with an old man. He put a helmet on me."
04:08 "It's just a fever. Get some sleep."
04:10 In the game, the player is put in a simulation where he gets to inhabit the life of an ordinary
04:15 man named Roy and is faced with the kind of decisions everyone has to make in life.
04:19 As Morty plays the game, convinced this is his reality after Rick slipped the headset on him,
04:24 we see the ups and downs of Roy's life as it unfolds,
04:28 with the disappointing heartbreaks and his harrowing bout with cancer.
04:31 "I'm not ready to die."
04:33 "You're not going to."
04:34 Roy might not have been real, but he touched our hearts with his story.
04:44 Number 15. The Council of Ricks
04:47 This panel of six different Ricks oversees the operations of the Citadel,
04:51 where even more versions of Rick and Morty live.
04:53 "What is this place?"
04:54 "The Citadel of Ricks. It's the secret headquarters for the Council of Ricks."
04:58 "Council of Ricks?"
05:00 Among the priorities of the Council was maintaining bureaucratic order
05:03 and protecting the Citadel from various threats,
05:06 including the Galactic Federation and Ricks C-137.
05:09 When they make the mistake of kidnapping Morty and Summer,
05:12 Rick dispatches the group, which was all part of an elaborate plan
05:16 to get rid of all his enemies in one fell swoop.
05:19 "What the hell is that?"
05:20 "Payback."
05:20 "Grandpa Rick?"
05:25 "Duh."
05:26 "You're alive!"
05:27 "Rick!"
05:27 "Morty, take this!"
05:28 After the demise of the Council's members,
05:30 there was a power vacuum in the Citadel that was later filled
05:33 when evil Morty became president.
05:35 Number 14. Crombopolis Michael
05:38 An assassin who bought weapons from Rick,
05:41 Crombopolis Michael was not like other contract killers.
05:44 He was very open about his profession and kept a very public profile.
05:48 "Hi Morty, I'm Crombopolis Michael. I'm an assassin. I buy guns from your grandpa."
05:52 "Ugh, here, go away."
05:54 "Ooh yeah, this looks deadly."
05:56 Voiced by Andy Daly, Michael had an upbeat personality
05:59 and was very passionate about his life's work.
06:01 Sadly, Morty, bothered by the ethical qualms of Rick doing business with this figure,
06:06 crashed into Michael to prevent him from killing his target.
06:09 "You have arrived at Crombopolis Michael. Your destination is below."
06:14 However, what Morty did not know was that by keeping Crombopolis Michael
06:18 from killing his target, he was aiding a more dangerous entity.
06:22 Number 13. The Zygerians
06:25 An alien race known for their scams,
06:27 the Zygerians were trying to fool Rick into giving away his formula
06:31 for concentrated dark matter.
06:32 "You're inside a simulation of a simulation in which you're trying to kill someone."
06:38 "Inside another giant simulation.
06:41 We never had the recipe for concentrated dark matter, but we do now. We do now, sucka!"
06:48 The leader, voiced by David Cross, is a petty jerk, as only Cross can bring to life.
06:54 To fool Rick, they set up simulations that gradually get more intricate
06:58 and make the audience question what the reality within the episode really is.
07:03 At first, it looks like the Zygerians were successful in their confidence game,
07:07 but Rick was just tricking them into destroying themselves
07:10 with cold indifference because they annoyed him.
07:12 "What the hell? What happened back there?"
07:14 "Why don't you ask the smartest people in the universe, Jerry?
07:17 Oh yeah, you can't. They blew up."
07:20 Number 12. Miles Knightley
07:22 An alien master of the heisting arts, Miles Knightley steals something before Rick does,
07:28 angering the genius scientist.
07:29 "The calling card for Miles Knightley, a heist artist,
07:33 aka a hipster dick whose adventures are 60% putting a crew together
07:37 and 40% revealing that the robbery already happened."
07:39 To get back at Knightley, Rick decides to crash HeistCon, where Knightley is presenting.
07:44 After challenging Rick to a heist-off,
07:47 Knightley reveals that he stole Rick's crew and performed the theft already.
07:51 However, Rick one-ups him and then some,
07:54 by revealing that he used a robot programmed with a heist algorithm
07:57 to hypnotize not only Knightley's crew, but also the entire convention.
08:02 "So I'm in your crew now?"
08:05 "Yeah, well, you're in good company. Right, everybody?"
08:08 "Yes."
08:09 "My God."
08:10 Despite hating heist movies,
08:12 Rick proves incredibly adept at using their tropes.
08:15 A little too much, actually.
08:17 After ordering the audience to steal the convention itself,
08:20 they proceed to rip Miles Knightley apart.
08:22 "Your next big score? Steal every square inch of HeistCon."
08:32 We don't think there's gonna be a switcheroo on this twist.
08:35 "Alright, look, Morty, I did not know that that was gonna happen.
08:37 That's not on me. Come on, Morty, let's go."
08:39 Number 11.
08:40 Japheth
08:41 When Rick asks Morty to retrieve wine he left in a dimension where time moves much faster,
08:46 like Narnia, Morty runs into a dog-cow man named Hoovy.
08:50 "Hoovy, dinner's ready."
08:51 "Be right there, sugar hoof.
08:53 Just helping this young man through a portal with that crate full of alcohol
08:56 that's been here for decades."
09:00 "Hey, thanks, Hoovy, I really appreciate that."
09:02 Hoovy accidentally follows Morty through his time dimension.
09:05 Upon returning, he finds his wife dead,
09:08 and his son Japheth immediately kills him for leaving.
09:11 "It wasn't my fault."
09:13 "Who's that? Who's-"
09:15 "The boy from the magic door."
09:18 As sad as Hoovy's death is, his son's life ends up being more impactful.
09:22 After attacking Morty in revenge when he returns,
09:25 Japheth then grows old and has sons of his own,
09:28 who don't believe his stories of the boy and the door.
09:31 Morty ends up beating him up so much his life gives out.
09:34 "I'm sorry, father. I'm sorry we never believed."
09:37 "He'll come back! Stop him! Stop him!"
09:41 With his dying words, Japheth sets his sons and their whole society against Morty.
09:46 Talk about a grudge.
09:47 Number 10. The decoys
09:50 In the episode "Mortiplicity," Rick created decoys of the entire Smith family,
09:55 who in turn made decoys, who in turn made decoys, etc.
09:59 "You said decoys didn't make decoys."
10:00 "And usually they don't, but again, it's nothing to worry about because decoys are harmless.
10:05 Just have to, you know, visit the rest and terminate the program."
10:08 The entire episode is a fakeout where we're led to believe we're seeing the Smith family,
10:12 only for it to be revealed to be decoys who are brutally murdered.
10:16 It's depressing to see the anguish some of the decoys go through
10:19 when they find out they're not real.
10:20 "Where are we going?"
10:21 "Off-grid, Morty. We're gonna live in the woods like libertarians.
10:24 We'll hunt rabbits and trade with like little pieces of gold bar that we cut off with a knife."
10:28 "That licks."
10:28 "We might be decoys, Summer. Everything about this licks."
10:31 "Oh, maybe."
10:31 Some of the decoys, which are sloppy decoys made by other decoys,
10:35 have interesting designs such as the scarecrow decoy or the ones made out of wood.
10:40 Number 9. Most of the Vindicators
10:43 A galactic superhero team, the Vindicators are by any other measure a powerful and successful group.
10:49 However, they made the mistake of asking Rick for help against their nemesis, Worldender.
10:54 "Whoa, Rick! Is that the Vinda Beacon? We're being called to assemble by the Vindicators!"
10:59 "I refuse to answer a literal call to adventure, Morty. Let it go to voicemail."
11:02 Rick gets drunk and proceeds to defeat him while in a stupor,
11:06 then has time to lay Saw-style traps and puzzles for the superheroes in Worldender's lair.
11:11 "Rick, is this a Saw thing? Are you seriously sawing the Vindicators?"
11:15 "Morty, I'm a drunk, not a hack."
11:17 Although a few of them are taken out by these, the rest end up killing each other
11:22 after the stressful situation brings out their inner conflicts.
11:25 Only one supernova manages to survive the outing.
11:29 Still, we may not have seen the last of the group, even if most of them are gone.
11:33 "Rick, supernova's getting away!"
11:34 "Eh, who cares?"
11:35 "But she was trying to kill us!"
11:37 "Morty, 20 people try to kill me every week."
11:39 Number 8. Tickets Please Guy
11:41 "Tickets please."
11:45 On a metaphysical story train, Rick and Morty encounter plenty of colorful characters,
11:50 including an older man who takes their tickets when they're in disguise.
11:53 Upon encountering them again, the Tickets Please Guy proves surprisingly buff
11:58 and adept at using a human shield.
12:00 "Tickets please."
12:01 "Dude, I'm sure you've got like so many tickets at this point."
12:04 Rick blows out the window of the train, causing Tickets Please Guy to be cut in half.
12:08 "Cultural breach. Losing continuity."
12:11 "Morty, hold on to something. Keep your head in the back."
12:14 While his mind wakes up in another reality, his bodily injuries soon catch up to him,
12:19 leading to him being in constant agony across both realities,
12:22 and even inspiring a religion in one.
12:25 "I mean, are you real? Is life real?"
12:27 "Okay, I'm calling the nurse because you are not doing this tonight."
12:30 "You're goddamn right I'm not because-"
12:31 "You are not doing this tonight!"
12:33 Ultimately, Morty puts Tickets Please Guy out of his misery,
12:36 though it may have also led to the death of a whole reality, too.
12:40 "Happy now?"
12:41 "He was suffering!"
12:42 Number 7. Armothy
12:44 In order to distract the denizens of a post-apocalyptic dimension,
12:48 Rick injects muscle memory and fighting experience from a dead man's arm into Morty's arm.
12:53 "I'm working with a mixed bag here, so you may not have perfect coordination, Morty."
12:56 "Ow! Hey!"
12:57 "I-I didn't do that!"
12:58 This makes Morty's arm not only a powerful killing implement,
13:01 but also semi-autonomous and intelligent.
13:04 While Morty uses the arm, which he dubs Armothy,
13:07 to vent his frustrations about his parents' divorce by competing in a blood dome,
13:11 Armothy seeks to find the ones who killed his wife and kids.
13:13 "What's the matter, you piece of crap?
13:15 Haven't you ever watched your family burn to death before?
13:18 Now I'm gonna whip you!"
13:20 With Morty's help, the two reach the man ultimately responsible,
13:24 and Armothy apparently kills him before fading away like a ghost.
13:27 "Maybe the lesson we've learned is that whether it's our parents' marriage,
13:33 a glowing green rock, or an awesome giant arm, sooner or later, we gotta let it go."
13:38 While his unfinished business has to be finished by Morty,
13:41 the duo's bizarre friendship was still entertaining while it lasted.
13:44 When Rick and Morty decide to look through memories Rick removed from his grandson's mind,
13:51 we meet Gordon Lunas.
13:53 "Wow, that's incredible!
13:55 What the heck?"
13:58 In this memory, Morty looks through a telescope at the moon,
14:01 only to see a sinister man with a mustache in mid-stride on the moon who looks back at him.
14:06 No one believes him, and the next day, Morty is disturbed to see the man,
14:10 Gordon Lunas, is now his school guidance counselor.
14:13 "Kids, I'd like to introduce you all to our new guidance counselor, Mr. Lunas."
14:17 "I look forward to helping guide you all towards a brighter future.
14:22 I believe every student should shoot for the moon."
14:27 Morty goes to his principal about it, who believes that Morty means Lunas is a deviant.
14:32 After he confronts Lunas with it, Morty is horrified to find that Lunas has taken his
14:36 own life and that what he saw on the telescope was just a smudge.
14:41 This is just awful for everyone involved.
14:43 "Oh my god, what have I done?
14:45 What have I done?"
14:46 Number 5.
14:47 Alien Parasites
14:49 "We could be infested with these things,
14:51 so we gotta keep an eye out for any zany, wacky characters that pop up."
14:54 "Oui, whatever you want, Rick, we're here to help."
14:57 The Smith family house becomes infested with alien parasites.
15:01 This isn't anything out of the ordinary for them, but the twist is these parasites insert
15:05 memories of themselves into their victims' brains, making them believe they're trusted
15:09 friends or family.
15:11 "Rick, these are our family and friends, the people we barbecue with.
15:15 Have you forgotten the barbecue?"
15:17 This leads to plenty of amusing "flashbacks" of their adventures with the family,
15:21 and to a lot of great character designs and concepts.
15:24 "I figured it out, Rick!
15:25 The parasites can only create pleasant memories!
15:28 I know you're real because I have a ton of bad memories with you!"
15:30 Eventually, Morty figures out that they can only create happy memories,
15:34 leading to a massacre of everyone they love the most.
15:38 While we still weep for Pencil Vestor,
15:40 none of us was hit nearly as hard as Jerry was by the loss of Sleepy Gary.
15:44 Number 4.
15:46 Tony
15:47 When Rick discovers someone has been using his special toilet, he's understandably furious.
15:53 "Time to meet your maker."
15:54 He goes to great lengths to find the culprit, and it turns out to be Tony,
15:58 a soft-spoken office worker and widower.
16:01 Although Rick decides against killing him, he still tries to rebuff Tony.
16:05 However, Tony continues using Rick's toilet and is unfazed by his threats.
16:10 "You need the same thing I needed, Rick.
16:12 You need someone to give you permission to live."
16:14 "What the- I thought you were a shy pooper!"
16:18 "You know what shy pooping is, Rick.
16:20 It's a pointless bid for control."
16:22 Even a simulation of the afterlife isn't enough to deter him.
16:25 Rick's simulation pushes Tony to live his life to the fullest,
16:28 which he does, before tragically dying while skiing on Space Everest.
16:33 "Tony died."
16:34 "Excuse me?"
16:36 "He quit his job, started living life to the fullest.
16:40 He crashed into a tree space skiing down Mount Space Everest."
16:44 Tony's death is so sad because he was just a nice guy who wanted to be Rick's friend.
16:49 Rick might have enjoyed his company if he weren't too busy pushing him away.
16:52 Number 3.
16:54 Fart
16:54 When Morty decides to stop an assassin Rick sells a gun to,
16:58 he saves the life of a green bejeweled cloud, whom Rick nicknames "Fart."
17:02 "Oh, good job, Morty.
17:03 You killed my best customer, but you saved a mind-reading fart."
17:07 "I like this name, Fart."
17:09 The telepathic gas is fond of singing and creating psychedelic montages in people's heads.
17:14 Although it proves surprisingly effective in getting them out of jams,
17:18 ultimately it wants to return to its own kind through a wormhole.
17:22 Morty is so sad to see it go.
17:24 At least until it reveals that it plans to return to kill all carbon-based life in the universe.
17:29 "Carbon-based life is a threat to all higher life.
17:32 To us you are what you would call a disease.
17:35 Wherever we discover you, we cure it.
17:37 You said yourself that life must be protected even through sacrifice."
17:41 With much regret, Morty kills Fart.
17:44 It's one of the first times Morty takes a life on purpose
17:47 and marks a major development in his character.
17:53 Goodbye, Innocence, and goodbye, Moon Men.
17:55 "Goodbye."
17:57 Number 2.
17:59 Tammy Guterman
18:00 Tammy Guterman seemed like just the average high school girl who fell for Rick's best bud,
18:04 Bird Person.
18:05 However, she turned out to be a galactic undercover agent that killed her new husband.
18:10 "Tammy, what are you doing?"
18:11 "Sit your bird ass down!"
18:14 While Bird Person's death hits hard, he does come back as Phoenix Person.
18:18 When Rick finally comes into conflict with Tammy again,
18:22 it's because she's chasing one of Rick's daughters, Beth.
18:25 One of the Beths, who may or may not be a clone.
18:29 "Wait, so there are two of them."
18:31 Anyway, when both Beths are kidnapped, Tammy has Rick at gunpoint when Morty and Summer
18:35 come to the rescue, allowing Rick to shoot Tammy dead in revenge for making him go to a wedding.
18:41 Also for killing his bestie.
18:42 "You made me go to a wedding."
18:45 Still, Tammy proves useful, even in death.

19:03 Number 1.
19:06 Rick Prime
19:06 This version of Rick is possibly the most evil and dangerous one of all.
19:11 In addition to killing Jerry Prime and Slow Mobius as previously mentioned,
19:15 he also killed Rick C-137's wife Diane.
19:18 "Diane was wiped from all existence by the weapon too cool for a name."
19:22 "The Omega Device."
19:23 "Known to inferiors as the Omega Device."
19:25 "Heard the name from an inferior."
19:27 "And it's my weapon. But it's your fault I had to use it on her."
19:30 He's also highly skilled, killing Rick's out of boredom and having developed a device that
19:34 can wipe out a person's existence across all dimensions of the multiverse.
19:38 For more than a season, Rick C-137 was obsessed with trying to find Rick Prime and get revenge
19:44 for ruining his life, only for Rick Prime to mock him for failing to do so.
19:48 After teaming up with Evil Morty, Rick C-137 is finally able to get his revenge by brutally
19:54 beating Rick Prime to a fatal pulp.
19:57 "Nip this in the bud. He's 14. What's gonna happen the next time he gets mad at Grandpa?"
20:01 "Let's do this thing."
20:06 Do you like the new voice actors that took over for Justin Roiland?
20:09 Let us know in the comments.
20:11 "Oh wee, things went downhill from there. So I've been crashing with the Smiths for a while. Oh wee."
