00:00 - Overcoming acne can be a big challenge for a teenager.
00:05 You try it all and then you try a little bit more
00:07 and somehow nothing seems to do the trick.
00:10 Well, thankfully, Dr. Brooke Jeffy is here to tell us
00:13 how we can treat that stubborn acne.
00:16 Welcome, doctor.
00:17 - Thank you for having me.
00:18 - I've been watching your TikToks
00:19 and I love what you're doing because it's so hard.
00:23 It's hard enough being a teenager
00:24 and then you struggle with your skin in this TikTok age
00:27 and I see all the teenagers, they want drunk elephant.
00:30 They want these trendy products and you weren't against that.
00:34 - Right, I do, but it is very overwhelming
00:36 and they are consumers like the rest of us.
00:39 So the marketing that appeals to them
00:41 is kind of hard to overcome,
00:43 but it plays a role in adults too, right?
00:44 We wanna be using everything.
00:46 - Yes, 'cause you think more is more
00:49 and you're so desperate to fix it,
00:50 but there are ingredients in some of those products
00:53 that are just too active for kids and teens.
00:56 - Exactly, too active, irritating to their skin
00:58 and honestly just not needed.
00:59 I mean, teens and tweens,
01:01 their skin does not need anti-aging products.
01:04 - Yes, right.
01:05 - Those really are not necessary
01:06 until our later 20s, even 30s.
01:09 So they're really potentially doing more harm
01:11 than good to younger kids.
01:12 - So you see patients 11, 12, 13,
01:15 and you're fixing the problems
01:17 that these skincare fixers broke.
01:22 - Yeah, exactly.
01:23 So a lot of times I'm having people back off of ingredients
01:27 because less is often more.
01:29 Certainly there are people that we have to incorporate
01:31 some actives or prescription therapy with,
01:34 but by far and away,
01:35 they're coming into me on way too many things
01:37 that are irritating their skin.
01:39 - So you recommend kind of keeping it simple.
01:41 - I recommend keeping it simple.
01:42 So starting out certainly with cleanser, moisturizer.
01:47 Cleansers are very easy to kind of identify now
01:50 in terms of what you need.
01:51 So like this one, for example, says it's for normal
01:53 to sensitive skin.
01:54 So you would choose something like that if that's you.
01:56 If your skin is a little more oily,
01:58 you would choose one that says it's for oily skin
02:00 like this one.
02:01 So you can rely on products generally
02:03 to tell you what the type is
02:05 and you want to select that matching your skin type.
02:08 Moisturizer, important regardless
02:10 of you're breaking out or not.
02:11 Sometimes kids think that they don't need
02:13 to use a moisturizer if they're breaking out,
02:14 that it's going to make things worse.
02:15 That is not true as long as they're using one appropriate
02:18 for their skin type.
02:19 - This is a very important point
02:20 because I've got a teenager who's been struggling
02:23 with his skin the last few years
02:25 and all the things you put on your skin to clear it
02:27 can really dry it.
02:29 And having dry skin gives you more acne.
02:31 - Exactly, it does.
02:33 It's that irritation, that inflammation,
02:34 it drives more acne because your skin barrier
02:37 is not healthy to resist it.
02:39 So moisturizer, important for everyone.
02:41 - I love that it's counterintuitive if you have oily skin,
02:44 but you do need to moisturize it.
02:45 But don't load on the anti-aging because if you're 12,
02:49 you're not going to have wrinkles.
02:50 - You don't need it and it's only irritating that.
02:53 So some other things to keep in mind with kids
02:56 when they're doing cleansers is it does take 30 to 60 seconds
02:59 to adequately cleanse your face.
03:01 - Yes, 'cause my 14 year old son is definitely like,
03:04 I'm done.
03:05 - Yeah, exactly.
03:07 Fingertips are good or I love these little soft
03:10 cleansing pads. - Oh, this is cute.
03:11 - So they're not aggressively rubbing.
03:13 - This is not a loofah.
03:15 This is nice.
03:17 - Yeah, so keeps it gentle.
03:19 If they are wearing makeup, micellar water,
03:23 definitely want to do a gentle,
03:25 a double cleanse type of situation
03:27 to be sure you're getting makeup off.
03:28 - Okay, so start with this and then cleanse.
03:30 - And then cleanse.
03:31 But consistency, guys, because I'll even see this in adults.
03:35 They're breaking out, but they're sleeping
03:37 in their makeup and products.
03:38 So being consistent twice a day is incredibly important.
03:42 - And now you've got your own line.
03:44 - I do have my own line, Between, which I created
03:48 to help tweens and younger teens
03:52 understand the importance of simplicity.
03:54 So it's just two steps.
03:55 You have to add a sunscreen as well, but two steps.
03:58 And the products are designed so that parents
04:02 don't have to wonder what they should be used.
04:04 They're fragrance-free, only helping the skin.
04:07 And the point is to get these consistent habits
04:09 going to minimize acne breakouts
04:11 and make their skin more resistant to trauma in the future.
04:15 I noticed you picked up the sunscreen.
04:16 I did want to point out that sunscreen,
04:18 sometimes people don't realize
04:19 that is also important for acne care.
04:22 So when your skin is damaged from chronic inflammation,
04:26 ultraviolet radiation from the sun,
04:27 it is not as resistant to acne.
04:29 So important for acne treatment too.
04:32 - Very interesting.
04:33 So make sure, especially in Arizona,
04:36 and that's year round, not just in summer,
04:37 use your sunscreen. - Year round, exactly.
04:39 - Dr. Brooke Jeffy, thank you so much.
04:42 And where can we find your products?
04:43 - You can find my products online.
04:45 The website is www.meetbetweenbtwn.com
04:49 or in my office in North Scottsdale.
04:51 - Thank you so much.
