00:00 Hello, I'm Superintendent P Thorpe and I'm South Yorkshire Police's lead for neglected crime.
00:04 Today I want to share with you ways you can keep your property safe against burglaries during the festive period.
00:10 Unfortunately during the winter months we see an increase of burglaries across South Yorkshire.
00:15 This is often due to the nights being longer and that many people don't return from work or days out until it has already got dark.
00:22 To respond to this we are actively placing more officers in the areas that see a higher rate of burglaries.
00:29 The high visibility patrols completed by officers not only provide a deterrent to those who might be seeking chances
00:35 but also provide opportunities for us to engage with you in the community and help keep you and your property safe.
00:41 As we are leading up to Christmas and New Year, burglars will be looking for easy opportunities to enter your property
00:48 taking advantage of knowing that you may have your Christmas presents hidden or already under your tree.
00:53 We know that anyone can become a victim of burglary.
00:58 And that has a lasting devastating impact on those affected.
01:02 There are many things you could do to make your home less of a target to burglars
01:07 including making sure all doors and windows to your property are secured and locked
01:12 even if you are just nipping out for a few minutes.
01:14 Hiding all shed, garage and car keys out of sight and closing and locking any side gates if possible.
01:21 As it is getting darker quicker we also recommend using a light timer switch
01:27 especially if you know that you will be out for the evening.
01:30 Leaving a light on inside your home can sometimes act as a deterrent to those looking for empty houses.
01:35 We often see that burglars target one area at a time
01:39 looking for multiple opportunities on one street or in the surrounding area.
01:43 As a force we are currently developing problem-orientated policing plans
01:47 looking at what method burglars are using and identifying rising trends.
01:52 These plans will allow us to develop a bespoke activity with your neighbour policing officers
01:57 and effectively engage with you and your communities
02:00 sharing what we are doing to keep your properties safe.
02:03 If you do have any concerns we ask that you please speak to us.
02:08 If you see any suspicious behaviour we urge you to report it to us via 101
02:12 or our online portal on our website.
02:14 The reports we receive from members of the public allow us to build an intelligence picture
02:20 and develop plans to tackle burglary rates across the force.
02:23 From all of us at South Yorkshire Police we hope you have a safe and happy Christmas.
02:27 Thank you.
