00:00 I don't know if it's in the cut where I'm like holding Ryan Gosling without a shirt on.
00:04 I don't know if that's...
00:05 It's not in the cut?
00:05 It's not in the cut.
00:06 Aww.
00:06 But it exists and it happened and you always have that.
00:09 I held him shirtless for 25 minutes.
00:12 Wow.
00:13 And that was pretty...
00:14 religious.
00:17 When I was cast, I laughed.
00:24 [laughter]
00:26 Like, oh wow, I get to be, you know, in a Barbie movie.
00:30 I didn't ever see that in my career trajectory.
00:33 And then to see the rest of the cast, so surreal.
00:37 Everyone was just outstanding and it was just like showing up to a playground.
00:42 I had a very interesting experience by being told by a friend,
00:46 "Congrats on Barbie. That's so cool."
00:48 I'm like, "I don't know what you're talking about."
00:50 [laughter]
00:51 Really?
00:51 Yes.
00:53 That's amazing.
00:54 Someone who knew the casting director pretty well and that it was in the works apparently.
00:58 That's so...
00:59 So I was like, "Well, wait. Is it half? I don't know what..."
01:02 Did you think you were getting cast as Ken or did you know you were going to be like the Mattel...
01:06 I had no idea.
01:08 So then, and then I still didn't hear for a while.
01:11 I'm like, "Maybe it's all just... whatever."
01:13 That guy's a liar.
01:14 Welcome to Hollywood.
01:16 But then, of course, it really did happen.
01:20 Got to read the script and was just, "Oh, this is going to be fantastic."
01:26 I kind of cast myself, so...
01:28 I know. You started this whole thing.
01:30 Surprise.
01:31 I was so shocked. I was surprised.
01:33 I couldn't believe it.
01:34 No, I definitely said to...
01:35 And I said to everyone before when we started developing the project,
01:38 I was like, "If whoever directs this, and I'm hoping it's Greta Gerwig,
01:43 wants someone else to be Barbie, I'm cool with that.
01:45 I'm very happy just to produce this movie."
01:47 But Greta said, "No, I want you to be Barbie."
01:49 But we went after our dream person for every role,
01:53 manifested it on the page.
01:55 Everyone's names were written into the script,
01:58 and everyone said yes.
02:00 I have to say, when all the Kens are playing at the Barbies on the beach,
02:04 I really, really loved that scene.
02:07 Because as much as we're making a joke about how cringy it is
02:09 when guys play the guitar at you,
02:12 I also can't help but, inside, I am quietly delighted.
02:16 I'm like, "He's playing the guitar at me!"
02:18 I was like, "Ryan Gosling's a foot away from me,
02:21 playing the guitar at me!"
02:24 And then all the Kens and Barbies doing it.
02:26 -And he's good! -Of course he's good.
02:27 -He's good. -He's Ryan Gosling.
02:29 I love the dream ballet and the Ken-on-Ken warfare
02:34 of just, you know, you have these characters that I think,
02:38 they're kind of the antagonists of the movie in a way,
02:40 but I think in that moment, it shows so many layers to the Kendam.
02:45 At once, these very evolved beings who are struggling to come into their own
02:50 and having their own journey,
02:52 and then also just playground boys who have absolutely no idea
02:56 what any of what they're doing is,
02:58 or any notion of consequences.
03:00 They're just like, as if patriarchy was just something that they saw on TV
03:05 and then went out into a sandbox and were just trying to play it in a game.
03:09 That's all they ever wanted to do.
03:11 There's something so kind of childlike and innocent about it.
03:14 It was really stupid and silly chasing you through the cubicles.
03:19 So the CEO and all the board, we'd have to catch Barbie
03:24 and we'd do this almost like Matrix-like running around,
03:28 chasing you, but it was very slapstick and running into each other
03:31 and scaring each other.
03:33 And then Ron, Tom always says when he watches that,
03:35 he's like, "I love that bit because I can see both of you laugh
03:38 while you're screaming and you walk away because we both go, 'Ahh!'"
03:42 I love shooting the car chase. I thought that was so fun.
03:46 Oh, yeah!
03:47 And I got to be the driver of this insane, crazy car chase.
03:51 And they let me--I mean, against their better judgment--
03:55 let me drive in some of it.
03:57 I trusted you.
03:58 It was such a blast.
03:59 I mean, it feels like such a trip because truly I didn't grow up feeling
04:03 really like Barbie resonated with me so much.
04:07 And so to read the script and to get to be a part of sort of
04:10 a reimagining of Barbie with so many more versions of her
04:15 and so much more representation, it's like it feels really fun
04:19 and exciting and like a gift to my little girl self,
04:22 but also to all the little girls now who get to watch Barbie's world
04:26 and see Issa as President Barbie and that they belong in that world.
04:31 My presidential--
04:32 I love that too!
04:33 I wanted to steal it.
04:35 There were a couple things I did successfully steal.
04:38 That one.
04:39 Don't--oh.
04:41 I'm so bad at that.
04:42 Let me take that back.
04:43 There were a couple things that I really wanted to steal,
04:45 but I didn't get a chance to, and the presidential tracksuit was one of them.
04:49 Did you take the sash as well?
04:50 That would be a good--did you want to steal the sash?
04:53 No.
04:54 But you didn't successfully do it?
04:55 No.
04:56 Yeah.
04:57 [laughter]
04:59 I had a great time not stealing my Ken onesie, my golden white Ken onesie.
05:04 I'm a little sad that I didn't steal it.
05:06 Yeah.
05:07 I had so many--I was so lucky to get so many outfit changes,
05:10 and I have no idea which would be my favorite because they were all so pretty.
05:15 I just loved that it was always matching and it was always with the hat
05:18 and the thing and the thing and the thing.
05:19 It's like she's just so high maintenance, like the sweetest way.
05:22 You know, there's a costume designer, and then there's a sculptor, a painter,
05:27 a storyteller, a writer.
05:30 Oh, God.
05:32 Cut that out.
05:33 Please cut that part out.
05:34 I'm sorry.
05:35 It's true!
05:36 This is art.
