00:00 "Incredible. One of the worst performances of my career and they never doubted it for a second."
00:05 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're having a look at the main cast of this 1980s favorite
00:11 and what they've been up to since their Bueller days.
00:14 "What are you interested in?"
00:15 "I still don't know which way is far away and to my heart."
00:20 Ben Stein, the economics professor.
00:25 Bueller? Bueller?
00:27 Despite having a minimal role in this film, Ben Stein made his mark by uttering a simple surname.
00:33 "Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?"
00:39 Stein's resume is nothing short of impressive, pre- and post-Bueller.
00:44 Stein began his career in politics as a speechwriter for Presidents Gerald Ford
00:48 and Richard Nixon, but somehow found himself a character actor.
00:52 "In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives,
00:57 in an effort to alleviate the effects of the… anyone? Anyone?"
01:01 Following his memorable turn as the economics teacher in Bueller,
01:05 he appeared in numerous TV and film productions, most notably in The Wonder Years and The Mask.
01:11 "Looks like 4th or 5th century Scandinavian.
01:15 Possibly a representation of one of the Norse night gods. Maybe Loki."
01:19 From 1997 to 2003, Stein hosted a successful game show, Win Ben Stein's Money.
01:25 "So if you're smart enough, fast enough, and if you've got the guts,
01:30 you can win Ben Stein's money."
01:33 Stein's most recent entertainment credit is voice acting in 2019,
01:39 but his political columns and publications continue to flow.
01:43 "Anyone? Something D-O-O economics."
01:48 Charlie Sheen - Garth Vollbeck
01:50 It's more than likely we don't have to tell you what Charlie Sheen is up to these days.
01:55 Sheen had a small role in Bueller as Garth Vollbeck, or "boy" in Police Station.
02:01 "Drugs?"
02:02 "Thank you, no, I'm straight."
02:06 "I meant, are you in here for drugs?"
02:10 This role was minimal, yet just a few months after the box office release of Bueller,
02:15 Sheen became a star when Platoon premiered. Since then,
02:18 Sheen has been consistently working in film and television. His most notable recurring television
02:23 role was that of Charlie Harper in Two and a Half Men, from which she was fired after
02:28 some incendiary public remarks and salary demands. "It's the sweetest breakfast treat,
02:33 it's maple maple maple-licious." His struggles with substance use,
02:39 mental health issues, and high-profile divorces were well-publicized.
02:43 Sheen continues to work in film and TV on a regular basis.
02:47 "I like a tiger blood, man."
02:48 Edie McClurg – Grace
02:50 Edie McClurg had a small yet memorable role in Bueller as the busy, bustling school secretary.
02:57 "Grace!"
03:01 She already had experience under her belt at the time, having appeared in comedy variety shows,
03:06 TV movies and shows, and major motion pictures such as 1976's Carrie.
03:11 McClurg has made her career as a character and voice actor, her acting credits including
03:16 anything from planes, trains and automobiles to Van Wilder. "May I see your rental agreement?"
03:21 "I threw it away." "Oh boy."
03:26 "Oh boy what?" "You're f***ed."
03:33 Her voice acting credits include Disney's The Little Mermaid and Frozen,
03:36 as well as Pixar's Cars to name a few. "Think I'd better go see what Louis is
03:41 up to." In 2019, McClurg's family filed for conservatorship of her affairs,
03:47 stating that she was suffering from dementia. Despite this, McClurg guest-voiced on Family Guy
03:53 in 2020, and starred in the 2022 film Eyes Upon Waking. "They all adore him.
03:59 They think he's a righteous dude."
04:01 Lyman Ward – Tom Bueller
04:03 Canadian actor Lyman Ward appeared in the film as patriarch Tom Bueller.
04:07 "Take a hot bath and then wrap a hot towel around your head."
04:11 "Wrap a hot towel around my head?" "And then make yourself some soup. Get a nap, okay?"
04:17 Like some others in this list, Ward made his career as a character actor. He began with an
04:22 appearance in an episode of Bonanza in 1971, and he has been working steadily since in film and
04:29 short stints in TV shows. His filmography post-Bueller includes The A-Team, Family Ties,
04:35 Monk, and many more. He appeared in films such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles,
04:40 and Independence Day in minor roles. "I'll see you in Chicago, John."
04:43 "You'll never make this city." Ward continues to work to this day,
04:48 with his name attached to a project in post-production as of 2023. Fun fact, Ward married
04:54 his on-screen Ferris Bueller's day-off wife, Cindy Pickett, in 1986, but the couple divorced in 1992.
05:02 "I'm so sorry."
05:09 Cindy Pickett, Katie Bueller
05:11 Cindy Pickett was already known for her recurring role on soap opera Guiding Light between 1976
05:27 and 1980, when she was cast as matriarch Katie Bueller. Though she did appear in a number of
05:32 films prior to and following Bueller, her main work was in television. She appeared in the 1980
05:38 series St. Elsewhere as Dr. Carol Novino from 1986 to '88. She has multiple TV guest spot credits in
05:46 such shows as Magnum, P.I. and CSI Miami, and has a credited role in the upcoming Star Trek
05:52 Equinox, The Night of Time. As previously mentioned, she was married to her on-screen
05:57 Ferris Bueller husband, Lyman Ward, between 1986 and 1992. Fun fact, Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward
06:04 also played the parents in the 1992 film Sleepwalkers. "He's utterly charming."
06:10 Jeffrey Jones, Ed Rooney Jeffrey Jones already had an established
06:15 acting career by the time he played Principal Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
06:21 "So far this semester, he has been absent nine times."
06:26 Prior to the '80s comedy, Jones most notably starred as Emperor Joseph II in 1984's Amadeus.
06:33 Subsequent to Bueller, Jones appeared in such films as Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October,
06:38 and Sleepy Hollow, and had a recurring role on the HBO series Deadwood as A.W. Merrick.
06:44 "You ever been beaten, Merrick?"
06:49 "Once, when I thought I had the smallpox, Doc Cochran slapped me in the face."
06:55 The 2019 release of Deadwood the Movie brought with it closer scrutiny of its actors,
07:00 and Jones' criminal past drew attention. In 2002, Jones was arrested on charges of engaging in
07:06 inappropriate behavior with a minor. He was convicted and had to register as an offender.
07:10 He hasn't worked since 2019. "It's Ed Rooney, Ferris. I'd like to have a word with you."
07:16 Jennifer Grey, Jeannie Bueller "You're letting him stay home? I can't believe this. If I was
07:22 bleeding out my eyes, you guys would make me go to school. This is so unfair."
07:25 Prior to playing snooty sister Jeannie in Bueller, Jennifer Grey notably appeared in the 1984 cult
07:31 classic Red Dawn. She is best known for playing Baby Houseman in 1987's Dirty Dancing.
07:37 "Nobody puts baby in a corner."
07:42 No one put her in the corner after this, as she appeared consistently in films,
07:46 voice acting, TV movies, and guest spots on popular shows. Grey withdrew from acting for
07:52 a couple of years in the late 1980s, after a fatal car crash caused by then-boyfriend Matthew
07:58 Broderick. Grey underwent two rhinoplasty surgeries at the age of 29, amidst pressure
08:03 from the industry and her mother, which rendered her unrecognizable and nearly ended her career.
08:08 She is still working, with a project slated for release in 2024.
08:13 "Just who I am, I have no question about it, so I feel pretty good in this skin."
08:19 Mia Sarah, Sloane Peterson
08:23 Mia Sarah had a lead role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off as girlfriend Sloane Peterson.
08:28 "Sloane Peterson, may I have a word with you, dear?"
08:32 She had previously made her film debut as Princess Lily in 1985's Legend,
08:36 which eventually became a cult classic. Following Bueller, Sarah appeared in a variety of films,
08:42 TV movies, and guest spots. Her most recognizable credits post-Bueller are the 1994 Van Damme film
08:49 Time Cop and the short-lived 2002 series Birds of Prey as Harley Quinn.
08:54 "Very impressive."
08:56 Sarah retired from the acting game in exchange for the role of Mother,
09:01 with her last credit being a short film in 2013. She was once married to Sean Connery's son, Jason,
09:07 but the two divorced in 2002. She married Jim Henson's son, Brian, in 2010.
09:13 "I love you."
09:14 "I love you too."
09:15 "He's gonna marry me."
09:19 Alan Ruck, Cameron Fry
09:22 Alan Ruck auditioned for the role of Cameron Fry in Ferris Bueller's Day Off
09:26 on advice from his friend, Matthew Broderick.
09:29 "He'll keep calling me. He'll keep calling me until I come over. He'll make me feel guilty.
09:34 This is ridiculous, okay? I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go with, I'll go."
09:41 It was a great move. His role as Ferris' unfortunate best friend is one of the
09:46 best performances in the movie. Ruck had a few projects under his belt prior to Bueller,
09:50 but the 80s comedy likely launched his career. Ruck has been busy since 1986.
09:56 He has appeared in films such as Speed and The Happening, as well as a seemingly endless list
10:01 of TV appearances, most recently as Connor Roy in Succession, which wrapped up in May of 2023.
10:08 "I think I finally found a job I want to do."
10:10 "Okay, what is it?"
10:11 "President of the United States."
10:14 He married actress Mireille Enos, star of the AMC show The Killing, in 2008.
10:19 He continues to work with no signs of stopping.
10:22 "Here's where Cameron goes berserk."
10:24 "Ahhhhhhhhh!"

10:42 Matthew Broderick - Ferris Bueller
10:47 "You're Abe Froman."
10:48 "That's right, I'm Abe Froman, the Sausage King of Chicago."
10:53 "Yeah, that's me."
10:56 Matthew Broderick began his career on the stage, which he frequently revisits.
11:01 Pre-Bueller, he appeared in 1983's critically acclaimed film,
11:05 War Games, as protagonist David Lightman.
11:08 His most recognizable role is without a doubt that of snarky,
11:11 rule- and fourth-wall-breaking teen Ferris Bueller.
11:15 "How could I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?"
11:18 Post-Bueller, Broderick drew attention in 1989's Civil War-era film, Glory,
11:23 as well as voicing Simba in Disney's The Lion King.
11:26 "No one needs me."
11:28 "Yes, we do. You're the king."
11:30 In 1987, Broderick was involved in a fatal car accident in which he sustained
11:35 multiple injuries. He was convicted of reckless driving and fine.
11:39 "And it had very serious, uh, traumatic, lasting effects on, I'm sure, Matthew and
11:47 the family of the other women and me."
11:50 He has consistently appeared in movie, TV, and voice acting roles until present day,
11:55 including 2023's Netflix miniseries, Painkiller.
11:59 Broderick has been married to actor Sarah Jessica Parker since 1997.
12:04 "Since when?"
12:05 "Since...
12:05 forever?"
12:08 "No, that's not true."
12:10 "It feels like it is."
